Once gold was found in the Comstock Carson became a thriving city. This Welcome to Carson City marker is located just after Mound House coming from Mound House and Dayton. This marker is just 6 miles east of Carson on Hwy 50. In 1880 became it's own town when the railroad ran through this area to the mining towns and into California. I always enjoy seeing this sign and knowing that Carson is just ahead!!

Many times in life it's the simple things…read more Along the Truckee River there's a gentleman that takes rocks from the river and creates small sculptures of people and animals. He manages to balance these various sized river rocks to make his creations. It amazes me the size of the sculpture he can produce and how perfect they appear. I'm glad he has the passion and time to make these. I enjoy checking them all out when Sheela and I walk along the Truckee River. It is really disappointing to know that some people thinks it's ok to destroy the works; they are in anyone's way or bothering. Just enjoy.

I love art when it just sort of happens unexpectedly…read more I have been a fan of Mr. Hobo for awhile now as I am a frequent walker along the Truckee Riverwalk. His works are thoughtful, humorous, beautiful and poignant. I really love his reclining people and the little stories each one seems to tell. He is a gifted artist. The creativity of closing, arranging and balancing pieces of river rock to make his sculptures is truly a sight to behold. He does have pieces for sale that have the rocks attached, but most of his displays are completely stacked and balanced. When the water level is low enough, he adds pieces in the river between the Sierra and Virginia Street bridges. This guy Rocks! (Sorry, I couldn't help myself.)

Anyway, I was graciously grated access to the VIP tent and had a chance to chat briefly with the organizer of the Tour de Nez. We joked about the name and he told us the story behind it.. apparently, the idea for the race began at a coffee shop and the owners of the shop both had big noses - hence the Nez! The race itself was a lot of fun to watch! I have never before been to a bike race but this is definitely a cool community event to check out. You can find yourself a spot on the lawn somewhere or visit one of the local restaurants along the roped off downtown corridor and enjoy watching the groups of cyclists speed by. They have different race categories including children, 11-14, 15-18 and adults. They each race for about 30-40 minutes depending on the age bracket and prizes, or primes (pronounced preems) are awarded. The cyclists come from around the state and nearby states to participate - they were all extremely impressive. An insider tip: Apparently a mint julep is the drink of choice for the tour de nez and many of the local bars and restaurants in the area offer it as a $5 special!

Crazy that you can review this... Located on HWY 50, the Cave Rock Tunnel is a Lake Tahoe landmark…read more A true icon. It's a great tunnel. I am not sure how else to review this or what else to say. It's never crumbled beneath me or fallen apart while I drove through it. I have probably driven through it hundreds of times, and I have taken to a tradition that my Dad did when I was a kid- honk twice in the tunnel. Now my kids love it too. I heard you can hike to the top, too. Pretty cool. Overall, a great tunnel and a required part of the drive from Carson City to South Lake Tahoe. (unless you go around the lake the other way, which would take forever)

It kind of looks like any tunnel inside. It's just there so US 50 can go through a mountain. There's several parking areas to stop at and look at the amazing scenery. Look for the side roads you can turn onto and get up the hills. There's a trail to take you far up. Basic tunnel but it's in a big rock. It has good places to look. There's very good views of the lake water.

This is such a fun event, I hope it comes back next year! We went the night after Thanksgiving,…read morewhich was probably the most popular night ever, it was packed and parking was insane! I think if you are there not on a prime night like that, it would be much more enjoyable. We probably parked a mile from the entrance, and they had parking attendants all around to assist, so it was not difficult, just a hike! There is so much to do and see, the interactive lights at the main plaza were really fun for my toddler, and despite it being really busy, there were not a ton of lines for these types of activities. The light trail itself was very easy to navigate with a giant double stroller, although it was busy. The tunnels are so impressive and all of the themed lanterns are just beautiful. There is music piped throughout, and it is really just a pleasant environment. The price seems a bit steep, but there are online coupons floating around that you can search for to help with the cost!
