There is a lovely old sign outside but no address on the door so I did feel a bit like I was being introduced to a Chinatown secret. The studio is on the 3rd floor, and is comprised of a bright open room with a traditional Buddhist shrine and a tidy collection of training weapons and old photos and relevant art lining the walls. Everything feels clean and well cared for. The back room is a casual lounge with a rag tag collection of futons and chalkboards and friendly people teasing each other in easy franglais. I met the teacher, a latin gentleman named Pierre with a red belt who has a kind laugh, easy welcoming manner, and a challenging and philosophical but still somehow playful approach to teaching. This school and it's students and teachers all made one thing very clear, this space and this tradition of Wing Chun is not a gym. Classes begin with respect shown to each other and end with 15 minutes of lecture on the philosophy and history of this branch of kung fu that traces its lineage back 1500 years directly to Wing Chun and the Shaolin Temple. The training was difficult, 2 minutes of plank is pretty hard core and that's just one of a series of physically demanding postures that require precision and extreme determination. But the whole attitude, from every single student and teacher, was one of welcome and kindness and respect for you wherever you are at. I learned that kung fu is a study of humanism and compassion and courage: the courage to face challenges that seem impossible, and the compassion to be gentle with the weak. I really loved the experience and look forward to going back. Apparently everyone is welcome to try their first introductory class for free so if you are interested in a kind of physical practice that goes way deeper than bulking up, definitely get in touch with these kind folks.

As far as martial arts, you can study different styles of Kung Fu (Ba Gua Zhang and Xing yi Quan), learn Qi Gong and they even have an Eskrima class. The amount of styles you study depends on your availability and budget. In a time where most schools are pandering to the surge in popularity of MMA, this place is a bit more traditional. I have nothing against MMA gyms... but if you're looking to train and study martial arts without the intention of getting in a ring, or octagon - this place is a welcome change to a lot of what's out there. The clinic works - I can tell from personal experience. I'm not sure about how the prices (available on website) compare with other clinics - but the sessions are effective! Ethan is a very knowledgeable and skilled practitioner of acupuncture and Tui Na, as well as a pleasant person, which makes the visits easier. Finally, one can begin studies in traditional Chinese medicine at this clinic, and it is interesting to note that most students there study both martial arts and medicine, so it's not like the disciplines are segregated - as a matter of fact, it's the opposite, classes often reference one another and if you manage to hurt yourself training in kung fu, chances are there's someone in the class that can help.
