In a world where even the best rental chain stores are going slowly down, Vogue Video is doing a great job at not only staying open, but offering great video rental services. I should really stop saying "video" - it's all DVD's these days, eh? For a very reasonable price you can rent out DVD's per night - think it's under two pounds per evening to do so. There are heaps of movies to choose from in here, and although you have to occasionally root through loads of movies to find what you want, that's part of the fun. Big entertainment stores have become too clinical, and often don't have much more to offer than (expensive) new releases. Vogue Video, on the other hand, has a ton of choice and really friendly customer service to boot. I wish more rental stores existed like this - maybe the personalised service that Vogue Video offers would save against the likes of video piracy.

This shop appears to have forgotten this fact and still offers the rarer CDs and records at high prices and in today's market it doesn't stand a chance. The owner is very helpful and knowledgeable so despite the fact the stacks of boxes make general browsing impossible, if there is something you are after it can be found here. However, for the rarer CDs you're looking to pay on the wrong side of £10 with no negotiation on price. Simply put, the internet has made this shop redundant.

Or, if you're not bothered sifting through the alphabetized mountains of vinyl, just name an album and Doug will know exactly where it is. I have never seen some many consecutive copies of desirable titles. There was not one artist I named that he was unable to locate I'm his store. Such a fantastic experience and will make for a great digging story. Left the city with no money because of this one store. Don't take my word for it, ask around the Edinburgh vinyl community and theyll know Doug on a first name basis

Now - you know that noise Homer Simpson makes when he thinks about food? That drooling noise? Well…read morethat is precisely the sound I made the first time I found this place - and to be truthful, the sound I make each time I return. Cult Fiction Movies is a magical place. It deals specially in no longer produced, rare and old films. In most cases the films you can find are all three. Cult also seems to have a handy knack at finding unbelievable box sets and box set art - an entire Hogwarts Castle to house four Harry Potter DVD's being a personal favourate. Cult Fiction Movies isnt what you would call expensive either - yes, the more rare or special the film is the more you will pay, but there is a huge collection of films for around £4 - a bargain in any bodies books, let along for such rare films. Cult Fiction Movies also has a delivery service, so no matter where you are in the world, that deleted edition of the Terminator can be yours. Cult Fiction Movies is a fantastic treasure trove of films, and if you are looking for something rare/old/other - this should be your first port of call. Oh dear, I seem to be making that noise again.

I agree, I've never heard of them too. Nonetheless the wacky labels and low budget productions provided ten minutes of laughter. And then the reality set in, the shop is full of the worst film releases ever made and I struggled to find one movie even remotely interesting. The dedicated film buff may rejoice amidst the old B movies and horribly named films- I however just walked straight out disinterested in its offerings.

Personally I think the extra money is worth it in the quality of books you get here. Of the book sections you obviously have fiction books and this is a good selection of good fiction books (you often get a lot of rubbish in some charity shops), but the standout sections are the Biographies, Education and Travel section. If you are into books and want specific types of books rather than just wanting a book to pass the time this will be more your shop. If you are the latter then there are cheaper places to go. I would recommend coming here, being more of the former, as the books here are great books - just the other day I got an autobiography and a cook book I'd wanted for ages, both the sort of books that don't come around very often and I was greatful for them even though they did cost a fair bit more than books elsewhere.

I'm always impressed at how organized both shops are, and it's so pleasant to be in there an hour can pass without one really noticing. On a recent visit, the books of the display shelf made me giggle; they were copies of the Twilight series by Stephenie Meyer! With the new movie Ecilpse in cinemas, any other book store would have done the same, and you get the feeling Oxfam's attempting to narrow the gap so that shoppers can feel as though they're in a first hand bookshop! I did wish I'd come here when I started my Twilight collection, as I'd have saved a lot of money; most of the books in here are in fantastic condition, and at an average of £2 a copy, any frayed pages will certainly be overlooked by me!

Calling car boot enthusiasts, bargain hunters and vinyl collectors…read more Packed floor to ceiling with potential swag, Backtracks is a shambolic, secondhand shop that sells everything from old record and tape decks to video and DVD players, lights, speakers and playstation machines. Some of them are neatly arranged but the majority of stuff feels haphazardly stacked or piled on top of older, dustier stuff. As the title implies, there's also crates and crates of well played 45s, 33s, tapes and DVDs. Prices are rock bottom and whilst lots of it could be categorised as bad or forgotten pop, rock, blues or classical, there are some classics from Pink Floyd, Jimi Hendrix, The Kinks, The Who and The Beatles if you're prepared to dig hard enough.

But my oh my, if you decide to be the one to sort through it all to actually find what you like, good luck to you. I've never properly stepped inside. I tried, but the felt like the whole place was just too precariously arranged. Like the whole thing might come toppling down at a wrong turn. And I'm notorious for really (really) not being aware of my own surface area. Or anything around me, for that matter. I did have a great deal of fun leafing through their record collection, though. They're all pretty cheap records, but I didn't recognise a single name, and didn't feel like taking the risk buying something rubbish. All I have to say now is: venture in at your own risk.
