So when I got the chance to make Strudel myself at the Wiener Kochsalon (Vienna Cooking Saloon) in Hamburg last Thursday I was glad to make use of this opportunity! Thanks for this evening to SasaKia from Qype Hamburg. The Wiener Kochstudio (www.wiener-kochsalon.com) in Hamburg is the second of its kind. Christian Wrenkh is the owner and a quite famous cook in Austria. He specialises in organising cooking sessions with and for ordinary people in his cooking studio. Open cooking sessions can be booked but also company sessions can be organised individually. When we got there we were greeted by set tables (by set I mean all the cooking equipment was there) and a glass of wine. Wine and water were served the entire evening - as much as one wanted. We started off by being introduced to the staff, then we were shown how to make the Strudel dough. Is actually quite simple but as the dough needs to rest, they had already prepared some for us. Three volunteers then made a delicious little snack for us and then we already started on the Strudel. We made two kinds - one sweet (apple) and one savoury (beans). Since I am allergic to beans I got a little special with feta. In the end it turned out to be one of the most popular Strudel. :-) With Strudel you have to make sure you have a thin layer of dough - just like with pizza - but even thinner. You then cut off the edges, fill the dough with your ingredients and roll it. For that you have special Strudel cloths. Then just put some melted butter on top, put it in the oven and it is more or less ready to eat! Easy right? Altogether I have to say I was positively surprised by the evening. I expected to be shown a little, make a little, eat and be done. The session was set from 7 to 10pm but actually we only left just before midnight. So if you go, bring some time! I love the fact that we got a little snack not to get hungry in between and also really liked that we were able to try out sweet and savoury Strudels and taste them after. I even got to take some home! So, if you want to learn how to cook, willing to try out some new things, then go to the Wiener Kochsalon in Hamburg or Vienna. Christian and his team will be able to show you some new dishes, mostly vegetarian but still delicious, and you're gonna be able to make them again at home because he will send you the recipes after!
