Viva CalleSJ is an open streets event managed by the City of San Jose's Department of Parks, Recreation, and Neighborhood Services. This past Sunday, miles of streets were closed off to traffic for the community to come together, some pedestrians, and others on all types of wheels (ie. skates, skateboards, strollers, but majority bikers), to enjoy art, music, and entertainment, while also supporting local businesses along the route. Each activity hub (Rose Garden, Arena Green, Backesto Park) had a stage with music performances, food trucks, and various booths (vendors and different organizations). Signs for dismount zones indicated that that people should walk their bikes (and other wheels) through these areas.
I enjoyed this event rollerblading through the streets, and making several stops along the way. I liked how it was mostly flat ground (and fairly smooth surface). Starting from the Rose Garden, we only crossed one slope in the road at Stockton and The Alameda, and it wasn't that bad. But we didn't go all the way to Backesto Park.
The streets were wide and didn't feel crowded, some parts even empty, so it was easy to glide through at our own pace and enjoy the scenery. I especially loved the artwork at the Arena Green hub, giant paintings lining the street near SAP Center. There was also rock climbing in this area.
In between hubs, we stopped to explore a mini low rider car show at Gypsy Rose, and view stunts by Robert Castillo's Freestyle Team, the performers spinning and flying over the ramps on scooters and bikes to entertain the crowds.
This entire event seemed pretty well organized, focusing on safety and security, but offering lots of freedom. It was family friendly, with kids riding tiny bikes alongside their parents. I even saw a couple with their cute pet dogs' heads sticking out of their backpacks as they cruised by us on their bike and skateboard.
There was free drinking water along the way and plenty of porta potties available. And even though some streets were closed off to traffic, we were able to easily find street parking near the Rose Garden in the morning around 10am.
Viva CalleSJ isn't exactly the most exciting event, nor is it a giant festival with a main attraction. But there were a lot of little things to love, and much to appreciate about the neighborhoods and city of San Jose. And of course, a great opportunity to get active (on foot or on wheels)... especially for me to make use of my inline skates on a breezy summer day :) read more
