The lobby is impressive, everything appears nice and welcoming, and you want to believe your loved one is going to receive the same level of attention and care behind the scenes. Unfortunately, that has not been our experience. When you visit often, you see the reality that someone taking a quick tour may never notice. We have repeatedly found our loved one's room not as clean or properly maintained as it should be. We bring these issues to the attention of staff and management, hear promises that they will be taken care of, and then come back and discover that the same problems still have not been addressed. After a while, the promises mean very little when there is no follow through. It becomes exhausting having to bring up the same concerns over and over again. Families should not have to constantly check whether basic things are actually being done. These are our loved ones. Families are trusting Oakmont with people who may depend on staff for their daily care, comfort, safety, and dignity. When a family raises a concern, it should be taken seriously and addressed not met with another promise that goes nowhere. In our experience, there is a major difference between how Oakmont of Valencia presents itself and what we have experienced as a family that visits regularly. A beautiful entrance and attractive facility cannot make up for poor communication, lack of follow through, cleanliness concerns, and feeling as though repeated complaints are not being taken seriously. We are tired of having to ask again and again for things that should already be happening. We are tired of hearing promises and returning to find that nothing has changed. Most of all, we are tired of feeling that we have to constantly advocate just to make sure our loved one receives the attention and environment they deserve. Oakmont of Valencia needs accountability and meaningful change not more promises. Our seniors deserve better. Their families deserve better.

Comfort Keepers has been providing 13 hours of caregiving every day. Over the past few months, we have used at least of dozen different Comfort Keepers caregivers to cover the various shifts, although most of the caregiving is provided by a few regulars. These people are WONDERFUL and my father is always happy to see them when they arrive. They are incredibly reliable and arrive on time ready to go. Our Comfort Keepers caregivers have gone above and beyond on numerous occasions. After one particularly stressful evening, one stayed several hours late (calling me for permission first) so she could be sure my father was settled and my mother was okay and didn't leave until they both had gone to sleep. They live up to their name and truly are a comfort to both my parents. The Comfort Keepers staff has been wonderful as well. I often deal with Teresa, our Case Manager and Amanda, who handles the scheduling. They are always accessible, even on weekends. My father's needs have fluctuated quite a bit and while I have tried to avoid last minute scheduling changes, at times it couldn't be helped. When I've contacted the staff they've consistently been understanding and caring not only for my parents, but me and the stress I'm dealing with. They always make me feel better. :) We've dealt with three other caregiving companies. Two called me at the last minute and said they were sorry but they didn't have anyone available to send! What was I supposed to do then?? The third one said they could only provide help during the day because their caregivers didn't like to work in the evenings - but my father needs help in the evenings! I've never had any problems like this with Comfort Keepers, in fact, when my father first came home from the hospital, they provided caregivers for us 24 hours a days. I could go on and on about these wonderful people who have been such a blessing to my family. They simply are the best!

While I was on the plane my husband called Home Helpers and they got someone to help me for the four hours I needed before my nurse friend could show up to help me while I was recovering in CA. Originally we thought we needed the care attendant to pick me up at 12:30 pm from the surgical center to take me to my hotel. We had to call that morning and see if she could come at 12 instead and she did! Jasmine was so kind and helped me with all of my care needs until my nurse got here. She was gentle with me in my fragile state and was there to help me with everything I needed. I learned that it was her day off and she came in knowing I was in a dire situation!! Now if that doesn't show the level of care of this team I don't know what does. Thank you so much, Jasmine! And to the owners to help coordinate this. She works very hard to make sure the home is clean and staffed with competent caregivers. They were especially skilled at medication administration and always greeted us with a smile. The home is bright and airy and the backyard is especially lovely. I was mostly happy with the care provided, but my mom was always put to bed very early (5:30 or 6:00 at night and left completely unattended until about 7:00 or 8:00 in the morning - that is more than 12 hours - which is way too long for any resident. They discouraged using the bathroom at night and relied on diapers which led to constant UTI's for my mom. Ultimately, this schedule proved too problematic for my mom's physical health so I had to move her despite me making repeated requests to have a regular bathroom visit during the night - they only obliged a few times and seemed to make my mom feel guilty about pressing her button to use the bathroom during the night. It was obvious the caregivers, after working during the day, wanted their evenings uninterrupted.) Although my mom had a private room, there is no private bathroom for the residents. The bathroom used by them is inside a shared bedroom down the hall from my mom's private room. There is a private bath in the hallway but that is for caregivers only, which is unfortunate. My mom felt uncomfortable using a bathroom in two other people's bedroom. I also wish there had been more organized activities to keep the residents engaged, of which there was little to none. My mom is alert, outgoing and enjoys interactions. So, perhaps her stage of life was not right for Castlemere. But, overall, I appreciate Veronica and her staff because they were caring towards my mom. It was just not the right fit.
