Virgin Active is the most luxe gym available in Sydney. It's wonderful for classes, my personal favorites are Reformer Pilates (look out for Michelle R) and Grid (which is like HIIT). read more

Hi everyone. My name is Joanne and I'm a survivor of Fitness First. *Hi Joanne* I don't know when my relationship with my gym first went bad. I guess it happened so gradually that I didn't notice at first. Then suddenly I found myself dreading going to the gym. The once friendly receptionists started ignoring me, the pressure to hand over my friends' details increased. The final straw came when I lost my job in the GFC and they wouldn't let me out of my contract, two months early. That's when I finally decided to make a break. I got the courage to leave. For a long time I found it hard to trust another gym. I had a couple of short relationships with a local gym and a circuit gym but nothing special. I'm happy to say that now I have found Virgin Active and so far things are going well. The reception staff are friendly and helpful and seem genuinely pleased to see me. There is no commitment to sign up long term so I don't feel trapped. Virgin worries if they don't see me in a while and call to check in. Virgin is open and not secretive about their fees (about $115 per month). Virgin is always well presented and clean. Virgin never tries to make me do things I don't want to like sign up with a trainer. But it's a balanced relationship. When I need some tough love there is Manny's spin class. Virgin has everything I need in a gym (pool, spa, rock wall, reformer beds, nap zone, hot yoga, heaps of machines and heaps of clean showers). You know how some people work out to get a beach body or to stay healthy? Well I work out so I can eat more. Found on the 3rd floor of MidCity by Pitt Street Mall, this place is just over 18 months old and still shiny and squeaky clean. When you walk in you're greeted by super friendly Virgins (Is that the right nomenclature? Or is it Virgin Active employees?) and then you're off to the locker room, but not before passing by a nifty rock wall free for climbing, a cafe, and a terminal of iMac's free for use. The locker room is SWEEEET! I can't speak for the female locker room but I assume it's nearly identical to the male one. There's ample space and you don't need to bring a lock or anything. You simply punch in a 4 digit code, and it'll lock. Punch in the same code and it'll unlock. The locker rooms also have hair dryers for use as well as the standard showers and toilets. There's an initial signup fee which is something like $130, but the benefit of Virgin Active is that there is NO CONTRACT. When you sign up, you get a one week trial period where you can cancel at no cost as well. Membership is flexible, so you can cancel any time and you can book as many classes (well, up to 3 a day) as you want each month. Membership is $58 fortnightly, and you can suspend your membership if you go on holiday. The stipulation with this is the suspension is a minimum of 4 weeks, and you'll be charged $8 fortnightly. Not bad. The machines are new and all the cardio machines have a personal TV attached. The TV's will usually be playing recent house music which is also pumping throughout the gym. There are enough free weights and machines that you don't have to wait too long, if at all and the same goes for the cardio machines. Cardio machines range from elliptical, treadmills, rowing, bicycles, and some I don't know the names of. The gym also houses a pool, sauna, and spa which I haven't used yet. Upon joining you'll get one session with a personal trainer to check your fitness level and to set goals where they'll set a program for you to follow. Afterwards it's up to you to continue meeting with your PT if you want to pay up, or if you have the dedication to continue following your program. The classes here are AWESOME. Except the hip hop class. If you are male and think you'll be breakdancing, popping and locking in this class you will be severely disappointed. I tried it once and I was one of two guys in the class and it consisted of a lot of hip gyrating and sassy moves. After the class I made a bee-line for the exit and questioned my masculinity in the shower. I highly recommend V-Punch, Body Pump (your body will ache for a week), V-Core (you will curse the instructor), and Ki-Max. If the other classes are up to par, then you will be very satisfied. The facilities are nice, and it's a great location. But underneath the shiny exterior are some glaring issues. --The entire time, from when I first joined to when I cancelled the membership, I felt like a commodity. People calling me, asking when I was joining. Even when I tried to cancel I was COULD NOT CANCEL OVER THE PHONE OR EMAIL - I HAD TO COME IN PERSON TO THAT GYM. Dude. Really?! --They charge for towels. Apparently it's a Sydney thing (or not). Maybe it's because I am used to American gyms offering towels for free, but to me that is a basic amenity that I expect. I don't see the point of going to a gym when I am charged for towels (and therefore cannot shower). My office even has towels (and they definitely don't charge us). --The classes are bad. You are better off going to a studio that specializes in spinning (Scenic Cycle is pretty good) or yoga (InYoga is great). Classpass also offers all of those studios for about $100 a month. The point is, there are better options where you will get a much better workout for the same price. There are also a few slimy things that they don't tell you until after you have signed the terms and conditions (other hidden charges, etc.) Overall, though, the whole experience was just shitty. The best gym ever in the Sydney CBD. The pool, sauna & spa (rubber duckies in the spa) are a must after working out. The V Cafe is a great idea, workout and get lunch before returning to work. Ultimate Protein shake and Bircher Muesli are my choice. They need to bring back the iphone/android app for Virgin Active to book classes, plus do something about the shocking reception you get in the gym, maybe introduce free wifi and fix those iMac down near the Cafe, as it's a gamble to get the one that works for today. I got motivated to join this gym at the Pitt St Mall branch because I fell in love with the Virgin Active gym in Moorgate, London. I was at crappy LA Fitness, and was blown away by Virgin Active because it was new and shiny. The same could be said for the Pitt St Mall branch. On initial inspection, the facilities are new and shiny with spacious floor space and a wide variety of activities being available. They have a few quirky features such as the sleeping pod room, the power plate centre, a climbing wall and even hula hoop classes! These features drew me in because they're not available at other gyms. Then you start working out and noticing a few things. The above quirky features don't really do anything for me and seem like a waste of time. For example the sleeping pod ain't that relaxing and I'm still not convinced the power plates do anything to help shift my fatty deposits. Also the group fitness studios aren't very challenging for people who have been exercising for a long time. The level is nowhere near V Club, or even Fitness First, so I got bored really easily. I realised this gym is like the Apple of the IT world. Cool features, but not as reliable as PC's. So I guess I would only recommend this gym for first-timers, people who just want to use the weights/treadmill facilities and those who need a motivator to go the gym. This honestly has been my greatest gym experience in all of the years that i've been gyming. The yoga instructors are incredibly talented for corporate and keep me coming back. Although staff should do something about all of those loose mats in the closet. As well as yoga classes, there are opportunities to try: pilates reformer, powerplate, cycle, Zuu, Animal Flow, boxing, barre, step, pump and even water aerobics. There are ALWAYS machines available for use, even during the peak times. I always find myself taking a dip in the pool and sweating it out in the sauna if I haven't sweat enough in hot yoga. Although I find it frustrating at times to sign up for classes, I really like the premise that you know that you will have a spot for a class. The three strikes rule makes it so people who sign up and don't show up get a penalty. It is a little overpriced, but you do get what you pay for. Also, I was able to freeze my account so i'm not sure why others have not been able to. read more

The gym is beautiful, and booking classes is a very good feature. It helps to stay disciplined and keep a place in a hot class. I loved the spa on very stressed days. Water bed is really nice and top stream can massage sore shoulders. Cycle class by Lara is the most intensive cardio workout you can do in this gym. However staff ruined it. Their personal trainers are intimidating and rude. They interrupted me every time when I start doing my circuit excusing themselves it was health & safety issues. As you can read in other reviews, including not recommended, I was not the first encountered this problem. The gym client service Manager prefers people to quit rather trying to look into the issues and resolving them without losing clients. The manager even sent me quit forms upfront seeing me as pain in the a$$. Even though functional exercise area looks good you will not be able to use it simply because they put too many classes in the zone and it's very hard to find a space for yourself. They order not to bring your own equipment but there is no enough TRX - again classes and PT hog them most They will not let you exercise your way. It will always be 'health & safety' bullshit. Finally didn't let me to keep my bag on the floor near the wall for ONCE. Because of the RULES. So I have to handle my towel, water bottle my notepad, pen, player across the floor. Seriously ?! What about sand bags for tabata intervals? Okay! After this rude intimidation, I put everything in the locker .. And it broke.. I could not get my bag out after 20 attempts.. Instead of working out, I spent an hour to keep that personal trainer happy. He wrote a fantastic review for Virgin Active by the way. Yelp put his review above truthy ones. This person would better look at his clients at GRID class and correct their plank - most of them arch low back or round thoracic spine. This will lead to injury. Isn't real health & safety issue ? I seriously consider to quit this gym because it was third time when bored personal trainers find a reason to kick me out from the floor. Overpriced membership and personal training. I stayed with them for four years, mostly due to reasonable corporate subsidy I received. When the time came to end my membership it was the day of their new pay cycle and they wouldn't provide a refund. This is despite having spent thousands with them over the past few years on personal training and membership. Its clear they value finance and being a shiny gym over customer service and loyalty. I didn't think a gym so big could be situated in the heart of the CBD, especially with a pool too! With the gym being so big and filled with a vast array of equipment there could be three hundred people in there and it still wouldn't feel busy! The gym is split of two floors with a Pilates, Yoga and relaxation(sleeping pod) studio downstairs, a boxing, spin and three further studio's upstairs so plenty of classes for you to choose from. If classes aren't your thing then there are plenty of cardio machines, weight machines and free weights area for you to use. A very big stretching zone means that you will never be struggling to find space for any part of your workout. A good 25m pool split in to 4 lanes which never seems to be busy is accompanied with a big plunge pool and sauna to relax with after a long workout. The changing rooms and showers are fantastic however the lockers can be temperamental and probably the only down point of the club. Also on offer is a climbing wall for beginners to try, experienced climbers may find the challenge lost after a climb or two. I love this gym! I have been a member of Virgin Active for 3 years but only recently started coming to the Pitt Street Mall one, due to a new job in the CBD. The size and variety you get from this gym is amazing considering it is located in one of the busiest parts of Sydney. you can always find some equipment to work out on or some floor space for doing your own thing. The staff is always super helpful and nice. I highly recommend this gym and if you know anyone that is a member there you can ask them to "invite a friend" and you can come in one day and use the gym for free! read more

This gym is as spacious as Doctor Who's tardis. Tucked up on the third floor of Mid City in the CBD, it is impossible to imagine how they managed to fit so much in to such a seemingly small space. As well as an impressively stocked café, there is a boxing suite, a vast cardio room, numerous weight machines, a swimming pool, sauna, spa and a large hall for classes. The changing rooms are fantastic, with full-length mirrors, powerful showers, plenty of changing space and a room solely dedicated to applying make up. Hair dryers and GHD straighteners are installed at each mirror. It looks like the sort of dressing room a celebrity would be lucky to get. You can also rest assured that your valuables are safe as you exercise - the lockers, rather than operating with a fiddly key, are secured using a PIN number. Say goodbye to the irritating bracelets-with-the-key-attached that gyms normally offer. The staff are very friendly, enthusiastic, and take their Mr/Miss Motivator roles to heart. Half way through my session, I'm coaxed into joining an impromptu circuit of push-ups, jump-ups, sit-ups and a number of other exhausting-ups. All the while, I'm being encouraged by the personal trainers whose enthusiasm is infectious. Exercise is one of my least-favourite past times, but at a gym such as this, it is at least made bearable by the excellent design of the gym and the brilliant attitude of the staff. I joined at Norwest specifically to go to classes, as advised on my initial tour of the club. There are never any spots in any of the classes I am able to attend, I complained about this multiple times to the staff there and was always assured more classes were coming - they didn't. I went to cancel and was advised I have to pay the cancellation fee as well as another direct debit. They advised they are too big to cater for individual members needs, but not big enough to waive fee's when they did not hold up their end of the contract. If you want to actually be helped on your fitness journey, and not just be another face in the crowd, this is definitely not the gym for you. read more

While the gym is certainly not perfect it's by far the best Sydney has to offer. The pool, sauna and massive spa are the main draw cards for me because after an hour work out, I need to unwind and relax, so having these things really motivates me to come and workout. I work about 3 or 4 minutes walk away, so that is also a big plus for me. The amount of space is truly staggering. I'd guess there's around 30 or 40 treadmills alone, with around 10 times 4 different types of cross trainers (40 in total) plus there's a huge array of weight and resistance training machines in the main area of the gym. There's another section of the gym that is slightly smaller than the main room, which holds a lesser amount of machines (about half the amount found in a regular size gym.. which is still a lot) for beginners who don't want to go out in the main area with all the regulars. It's a little more secluded so you don't need to feel embarrassed etc There's plenty of classes going all the time with around 8 or 9 individual rooms for the classes to be held, there's a rock climbing wall, sleep pods, vibration platforms and awesome locker room facilities. My only complaint would be around the membership plans available. There seems to be only one type of membership, which is about $116/month. That's a little bit expensive but due to the location and facilities, it's not too bad.. and if you go 2 or 3 times a week, it is worthwhile. The problem is when you want to work out your spouse or friend who would only want to come a few times a month. There is the ability to pay one-off visits but at $26 per visit, it is very expensive. I've made numerous suggestions to them that go ignored about having a VIP pay-as-you-go membership whereby you would pay $15 or $20 a month, then have a greatly reduced per-visit fee... but they won't even acknowledge the suggestion.. I've already begun to look for alternative gyms closer to home so I can work out with my spouse.. so even with all the great things to say about VA, this is the one area of their offering that needs to improve because they're definitely going to lose me as a customer over it. read more

I go to Moore park gym in Sydney. Customer service is very poor. Gym has reached capacity 1 year ago. Instructors arent there to help you. They will help you only if you're willing to buy their PT sessions. I was pinched so many times that I believe that I was pinched personal items valued at a total of 1200 aud so far. One time someone pinched the whole make up bag. It was a very large bag with all my make up. It was really weird in a short period of time it was gone....I spoke with the manager adele that was visible irritated with me...she was almost yelling at me. Didn't handle the problem very well. I have been to other gyms from virgin active and only had these issues with Moore park one. Financially was a bad decision to join this gym because I had to replace all my items pinched. The worst part is their passive aggressive way of dealing with the issues. Staff seem very nice...until you have an issue. Then, their true colours are revealed.
