My grandmother would spend more than an hour, pouring over every single bracelet in the old pawn case. Every single one. She'd try on more than I care to think about. Sometimes, we'd have a dozen different cuffs on the counter, waiting for her to choose the one (or two) that she wanted. And of course, my mother and I got sucked into this game as well. While we stood around, trying to get out of the way of the tourists, my mother, grandmother, and I talked. "Oh, that'll be nice once it is shined up." "How's school?" "What about that one over there!" Vicki, Gary, and the others would chime in along the way. Over the course of more than 30 years of regular visits, we got to know Gary and the entire staff. They were always kind, patient, and funny. We learned how Gary would buy bags of old pawn, by weight, sight unseen. We learned about kids, grandkids, divorces, retirements, and that the folks who worked there were kind and funny people. We also had a darn good time. Between the 3 of us desert rats, we gathered an enormous collection of Native American (Mostly Navajo) cuffs, necklaces, earrings, and rings. ENORMOUS. Today, my grandmother is more than 100 years old and in declining health. When I look at her collection now, I see workmanship, quality, good prices, and the priceless: memories. OPT is an overwhelming treat. Take your time. Ask questions. Go for a walk, or go for lunch--then go back and get that piece you were eyeing. You won't regret it. (I attached a small sample.)

I craft or talent I'd developed when I was a resident of Tubac. But you don't have to live here to be a member. There are members across the country. But residents and members get to see all the openings The center also hosts art shows from all over the country. And some from Mexico as well. They sponsor a summer art program for children. They have live musical performances during the season ( October to April). An integral part of the community I can't remember all the other events they are credited for. I suggest you visit their website for full details. And if you are ever in this area stop by. You'll find lots of local art in the gift shop

Also samples from local artist that will be participating in another annual event, the Open Studio Tour. The center has a gift shop with paintings from still other artists that are local, jewelry, pottery, art books and children books. They have expanded and remodeled with twice the space for exhibitions and some workshops. In one of the rooms the are exhibiting the "Tucson Seven". World famous artist of the west. Spent quite a lot of time enjoying all the art. Makes it very special to see some artist I know and how far there work has progress in the last four years since I've been here. Located in Tubac AZ which is 40 miles south of Tucson and 20 miles north of the Mexican border town of Nogales. Tubac truly is an artist village 1,200 permanent residents and growing. The population doubles and then some with the snow birds. I have had some of my painting in display at this art center.
