They have more classes and even a gym in the back. I was pretty impressed with how much bigger the church was on the inside than it looked on the outside. I also like their worship times, since they are good for those out at the lake, who may want to sleep in more on weekends. Class starts at 9:45am, while worship starts at 10:45am. I'd love to come back and try one of the classes sometime, to see if they have anything for young professionals, singles, or even college-age students. Thank you, Lake Athens Baptist Church!

They do meet on Sunday evenings (some in small groups in various homes), but some of them do meet for a Bible study at the church building. They also offer "make-up communion" on Sunday evenings for those who may have missed it Sunday morning. The people here are very friendly & welcoming, & I recognized a few faces from other churches in other towns. I will probably be visiting here again in the future!

For the Wednesday and Thursday of Holy Week, this church hosted a Passover meal where others in the…read morecommunity were invited. It was more focused on the Last Supper, and lessons from that. I've been to others where they actually guide you through the Passover rituals. The people here seemed nice, and they have a great facility, and the parking lot was adequate. I'd love to come if they host this event again next year. I could come back to visit sooner, if I hear they have a program or class for singles, young professionals, and/or college students.

The church itself is fairly big for the small look of the campus. The worship center seemed small, but all the additions for the rest of the camps were pretty large. The entry hall has pretty, stained glass windows with images of angels or saints, not sure of which. Very nice, clean, was a great place to host the event.

My husband and I recently moved to Tyler in hopes of finding a church with a message. If you want a…read morechurch that does not even mention the word of God, I recommend coming here. The entire service was a concert essentially. My husband and I have been to several churches since we have moved around Texas quite a bit, and I can say that this was the worst we have gone. When I say there was literally no message, the service started at 11, and we walked out at 11:42 because they were still worshiping at an hour long service. Where is the message from their pastor? Seems to be a feel good come and sing, but don't educate yourself on the word of God. Remember folks, God warns of false prophets and churches in the end times. Matthew 24:11, 24 (ESV) "And many false prophets will arise and lead many astray... For false christs and false prophets will arise and perform great signs and wonders, so as to lead astray, if possible, even the elect."

The wedding was at the outdoor wedding chapel, and we hosted our reception in the youth building (which also happens to be the place where my now-husband asked me out on our first date). I've been teaching 4th grade Sunday school since the class was in 2nd grade (moving up with them every year!). My husband and I love to usher together, attend events with the honeymooners, and (previously) were very active in re:generation. Needless to say, over the last decade, there have been so many major life events, and this church has been here for me and my family through every high and low. I can't even tell you the number of times someone has come up to me to comfort me during a dark time or just listened to me talk and cry. This church has been a safe place for me, a place where I can be authentic in my pain, questions, and desire for connection. Growing up in a very emotionally toxic family, who often used various bible passages to justify their treatment of me and others, I've had so much religion-based trauma to work through, and I'm thankful for all the mentors at South Spring who have helped me process that with patience and gentleness. I am so thankful for Pastor Chris Legg, and his wisdom. As an LPC (licensed professional counselor) and a founder of Alethia Counseling Center, he has touched me and so many dear family members and friends through his sermons, online videos, books, and founding Alethia Counseling Center (Also, shameless plug for Alethia!!! I know so many people who've had a terrible experience with a counselor before and have deeply connected with a counselor from Alethia afterward. The counselors at Alethia are incredible, and I've only heard great things from other clients). I've attended so many churches where the pastor was emotionally unhealthy or, to put it kindly, emotionally unaware. I love how Chris integrates his knowledge of the bible with his knowledge of emotional health, and I've benefitted so much from the wisdom he's shared. I could, quite frankly, write a novel about my experiences here and everything this church has done for me. There are so many things to love! They've always been so involved with the community, hosting free events throughout the year and keeping their property open for anyone to use and enjoy, even non-members. They place so much emphasis on fostering and adoption--and many of those in leadership not just advocate for but model being adoptive parents. They take hospitality VERY seriously, including having greeters and ushers, as well as doughnuts and coffee available. This church places the emphasis on all the right things. If you haven't been before, I hope you'll give it a shot. This is a wonderful place to connect, grow, and heal. And if I happen to be ushering that Sunday, be sure to say hi! :)
