I've been attending SSBC for almost 9 years. A few years back, the guy I was talking to began…read moreattending, and we were married about a year and a half later by Pastor Chris. The wedding was at the outdoor wedding chapel, and we hosted our reception in the youth building (which also happens to be the place where my now-husband asked me out on our first date). I've been teaching 4th grade Sunday school since the class was in 2nd grade (moving up with them every year!). My husband and I love to usher together, attend events with the honeymooners, and (previously) were very active in re:generation. Needless to say, over the last decade, there have been so many major life events, and this church has been here for me and my family through every high and low. I can't even tell you the number of times someone has come up to me to comfort me during a dark time or just listened to me talk and cry. This church has been a safe place for me, a place where I can be authentic in my pain, questions, and desire for connection. Growing up in a very emotionally toxic family, who often used various bible passages to justify their treatment of me and others, I've had so much religion-based trauma to work through, and I'm thankful for all the mentors at South Spring who have helped me process that with patience and gentleness. I am so thankful for Pastor Chris Legg, and his wisdom. As an LPC (licensed professional counselor) and a founder of Alethia Counseling Center, he has touched me and so many dear family members and friends through his sermons, online videos, books, and founding Alethia Counseling Center (Also, shameless plug for Alethia!!! I know so many people who've had a terrible experience with a counselor before and have deeply connected with a counselor from Alethia afterward. The counselors at Alethia are incredible, and I've only heard great things from other clients). I've attended so many churches where the pastor was emotionally unhealthy or, to put it kindly, emotionally unaware. I love how Chris integrates his knowledge of the bible with his knowledge of emotional health, and I've benefitted so much from the wisdom he's shared. I could, quite frankly, write a novel about my experiences here and everything this church has done for me. There are so many things to love! They've always been so involved with the community, hosting free events throughout the year and keeping their property open for anyone to use and enjoy, even non-members. They place so much emphasis on fostering and adoption--and many of those in leadership not just advocate for but model being adoptive parents. They take hospitality VERY seriously, including having greeters and ushers, as well as doughnuts and coffee available. This church places the emphasis on all the right things. If you haven't been before, I hope you'll give it a shot. This is a wonderful place to connect, grow, and heal. And if I happen to be ushering that Sunday, be sure to say hi! :)

Hmm, disclaimer! I'm actually qualified at this point to write about Brewtones, which is from what…read moreI can tell, the Vineyard's congregation-hall-turned-small-venue for concerts. After troubles from Googlemaps in getting there -- some craziness involving that U-turn at Rice, but oh wait the directions totally flip you around and it's at the other corner of the intersection -- we grabbed a bite to eat at Jason's Deli and headed over. The first thing we noticed was the mass of Indiekids gathered around the front. A different breed from their hair-in-face cousins the Emokids, the Indiekids are armed with mullets and gently used, fashionable-again apparel from Goodwill. It's ok though. 'cause the crowd was nice: lots of manhugging going on around here. There's a foyer area with couches and a beverage bar. It feels comfy. Beyond this area is the main hall. More couches. Pleasantly dim, though I'm hoping that's a little different on Sundays. I have to say this was the most personal concert I've ever attended. I had thought that Emo's inside stage in Austin was great, but this one takes honors. Sure it was a church concert, but I definitely got my money's worth. Acoustics were spot on for the space the sound had to fill, and you could sit or stand and feel close to the band. An aside, the lighting fixtures were awesome. What I thought were vines strung about the dull, 30watt chandeliers were actually Christmas lights filling the shades. Totally a home project I will never get around to. Cheers, Vineyard! Be fruitful!
