This elementary school is in the Covington Independent Public School district. Although much of the…read moreschool appears to be very old, it has obviously been updated and remodeled over the years. My affiliation with the school is through my employer, Gateway Community & Technical College. Gateway has a mentoring relationship with the school and is involved in various activities there. I participated in a book club with a 5th grade class and also in a book-making group for younger students. The staff seems very caring and involved.

When we toured the…read morebuilding, we could tell it was a little run down, but the staff seemed positive and they told us she would be in a classroom environment and that the children were separated by age groups. On her first day, when my girlfriend went to pick her up, no one knew where she was. My girlfriend asked to speak to her teacher, and was informed that the teachers leave at 3pm and that from then on, the children are left with school-age teen girls, one of which in another classroom (5 year olds) yelling at a child to "put that down NOW". My girlfriend finally had to go out to the playground to locate our daughter, and found her in the play-structure, with kids that were older than her, not separated by age as we were told, not able to get down, scared and asking for help down. No one on staff knew where her change of clothes or back-pack were. When I left work to go and speak to the owner, he had conveniently just left, even though my girlfriend had spoken with him 20 minutes before then and told him I was on my way down. When I spoke with the director, she told me that "There were a few different stories about what happened." That's not something you want to hear as a parent who just put their child into daycare for the first time and has a first day like that. She tried telling me the "girls" had said that my daughter was on the playground and having a good time. I later learned that the other kids were hitting and kicking her trying to get her to get off the play structure. When we got her home, she started eating all the food in the house that she could find and eating like she hadn't been fed. Later that night, she was so upset and crying that she almost threw up. I know my daughter, and I know when something really bothers her. We were worried about the quality of care she received from this place IN JUST ONE DAY! Parent to parent, I would not waist the time it takes to pick up the phone and call these people. I even came in the day after to speak with the owner and get our money back, and again the owner wasn't there, or at least wouldn't talk to me. After asking some people at work, I found out that the owner has a reputation for ripping people off and not being on the level. Just wanted to share my experience.

Seemed like a great Montessori blend and we felt like it was going to be an awesome fit! My child was due August 11, and we gave them a deposit and "enrolled" him on March 15. I told them at that time - and the lady wrote it down - that I would take 12 weeks off with my baby before I returned to work. They told me no problem and to just call them when he was born to determine his start date. I did exactly that. I called them 1 week after he was born, told them my return to work date of 11/7 (he was born 3 days after his due date, so he wouldn't be starting daycare any EARLIER than expected), and they told me that they wouldn't have any room for him until 12/19! They also said, "We have to make sure that another child is walking before then, so the very earliest we could get him in is the 19. If that child isn't walking, we'll have to push the date back further." I explained to the lady on the phone that this was going to give me 6 WEEKS without childcare and she asked me if I could get help from family or friends until then. Ridiculous! I don't have family nearby to help with childcare (if I did, I wouldn't be enrolling him in daycare) and all of my friends work during the day, too. When I asked for my $75 deposit back because they didn't hold his spot, they basically scoffed at me and said tough luck. I'm completely appalled. Don't enroll your child here - they may make you wait on another child's development so your kid can start daycare, and you'll be stuck scrambling to find a place (as if the early weeks after having a baby aren't stressful enough as it is). Totally let down and disappointed. I want my $75 back.

But I think that might have been different if I'd gone to Grandview Elementary. It's a small urban school. It sits on a bluff in Bellevue overlooking the city and the Cincinnati skyline. Wonderful. But even with the blinds drawn and the view obscured, it'd be a great school. The teachers seem to care. No one gives me the impression of clocking time; of winding down until summer vacation hits or a juicy public employees pension can be tapped. Here's what sold me on the school: My oldest went to kindergarten there. We were unhappy with it. From first grade through fourth, my daughter went to Catholic schools. Because of several problems there, we decided it was time to move on. I called several schools and on a lark called Grandview. The principal that was just starting her first year when my daughter was in kindergarten now had several years to reshape the school. What caught my attention though was she still remember my daughter, her interests, and her hobbies...and my too-young-for-school daughter's name. And me and my wife. That's a level of attention paid that we still find permeating the school. This is an urban school with too much poverty and young, broken families, but the school offers those kids and all kids a chance. It's one I wish I had had a chance to go to.

The thing to keep in mind with Grandview is that you aren't just getting a great school--you are getting a great community and a true neighborhood school. We are able to walk to any number of our friends and neighbors homes for gatherings, and it's a regular occurrence for us to be walking down the street and my son to see his classmates (and even teachers and staff). Bellevue's walkability, community garden, community potlucks, and a closeness we had formed with some residents and young families here, are literally the reasons why we were strongly considering moving from Fort Thomas to Bellevue. Then, when we met members of the Board of Education and Robb Smith, the superintendent, we were sold. Grandview's staff has been nothing but supportive of the kids I've seen coming and going, from Daphne (the crossing guard) knowing each kid by name, to Mrs. Young and Mr. Fuller high fiving and greeting each kid coming in with a smile and/or high five. We're glad we made the jump, and look forward to many more years of our family being Tigers. #ChooseBellevue

As a tutor in the afterschool program, I worked with several kids from K-8 grade. Since I was arriving as the students were dismissed from the regular school day, I didn't really get to know many of the teachers. The ones I did meet, however, were dedicated, caring individuals who seemed to have their students best interests at heart. I'm sure the new building will be a welcome place for these students and staff.

Everything is done with high quality standards. Their goal is to glorify their Father in heaven and to give their best in everything. It completely shows! The school is Christian in nature and holds to the teachings of the Bible. They seek to raise children to serve God with excellent leader ship, but students also graduate becoming well rounded spiritually, emotionally, and academically. Mars Hill is a community to the core with each family striving to help each child to become a better version of themselves. I would highly recommend the school and any of the afterschool programs. Terrible school. The school resource officer has been grooming my granddaughter. She was meeting…read morewith my granddaughter daily & buying her toys. We had already told them we did not have any needs & my granddaughte had plenty of toys & to not send anything home. Finally, we went to the school & told the resource officer directly to leave my granddaughter alone. What they did next was highly unethical, they said they talked to me about my granddaughters absences, which was a lie. I never spoke with them. They told my daughter that my granddaughter was out of parent notes & if she missed anymore, there would be truancy charges. Do you know how hard it is to watch your granddaughter get physically sick over being stalked by the resource officer? Every chance the resource officer got to be alone with her, she did. After we make a complaint over it, the school filed truancy charges, I call this retaliation. I heard he secretary tell my daughter (IF) she (my granddaughter) missed again, they would report her for truancy. Then they added notes that they couldn't get a hold of us & added pages & pages of notes. I noticed the notes were from when my daughter was a child back in 2009 & they added that as evidence to my granddaughter being truant. Ironically, my daughter was a victim of Yealey & the notes go back to when I had filed a OCR complaint. Did you know that Yealey had employed a counselor who was married to a pedofile who assaumotes kids my daughter's age at that time? Now the school is grooming my granddaughter & lying in school documents in order to look innocent. I am seeking legal advice & I will take legal action. I would love to give full details on this situation to our local news & if anyone else has had a bad experience, please reach out & maybe we can start a class action lawsuit against this unethical & unacceptable retaliation & unjust treatment & behavior.
