The Villa Reale is one of the most important Neo-Classical buildings in Milan. It was built in 1790 by Leopoldo Pollak and has been the residence of Napoleon and Josephine and also Eugene Beauharnais (stepson and adopted child of Napoleon, Viceroy of Italy from 1805-1814) and General Radetzky (Viceroy of Lombardy-Venetia from 1848 to 1857).
The main block is dominated by four Ionic columns which is flanked by two lower wings with octagonal vestibules. The pilasters and columns decorate the building and in turn are surrounded by an English-style garden.
Today, the Villa Reale houses the Galleria D'Arte Moderna. Matisse, Picasso, Renoir, Morandi and Sironi are on exhibit.
So in addition to enjoying the Galleria, take the time to enjoy the Villa too!
