Yes, stay here. The price is right for the accommodation…read moreyou're getting, and the staff is great. I've read some pretty concerning reviews before coming here and thought the worst but was glad to find out that it was a decent hostel in an unassuming neighborhood, with reasonable amenities, and everything you need in shouting distance. The Generator is located in a neighborhood in the 10th that I'd not had the pleasure of going to in my 10 years visiting France, but once I'd gotten used to it- it was a nice calm little place. The neighborhood surrounding the Generator heading into the 19th though - isn't safe for young or new travelers. Hoards of homeless people are littered under the bridge, and it can be a pretty chaotic neighborhood. The people themselves are pleasant enough, just stay to yourself. The drinks were heavy, the bar downstairs was nice and lively. The shower rooms, toilets, and beds were what you can expect from a constantly rotating line of people. It's not top notch, it's not bottom rung. The cleaning staff was in daily, maintenance came directly both times I requested (for the shower, and a clogged toilet). The maintenance crew for the toilet came a total of 4 times. I stayed in a room of 8, Most of the ladies were great, but some need reminders when checking in about how to be kind in a large hostel room. Some came in at 2a when I needed to rise at 5a and made a tremendous amount of noise. Be mindful when booking, or reviewing that you're staying in a hostel with an AMAZING amount of turn over, they may need more staff, but what they do have is keeping up quite well.

We had a driver that was supposed to pick us up to take us to airport and we MISSED IT because we never got a call from the lobby that he was there. The staff swears they called us multiple times but the phone never rang. I'm convinced their phone did not work but they would not take accountability. As a customer, it's honestly shocking how unprofessional the company is. They stranded us, blamed us, and were quite rude about it too. Save yourself the stress and choose a different hotel!

When I questioned the front desk, the receptionist shrugged and said, "Maybe your room phone doesn't work." If the room phone doesn't work, that's THEIR responsibility -- not ours. When we went down to the lobby, the staff tried to blame the driver. When we called the transportation company, they said the driver called our personal phone -- which absolutely never happened. So we had the hotel blaming the driver, the driver blaming the hotel, and no one actually helping us. The lack of accountability here is unbelievable. We were completely stranded because of their incompetence, and not a single person tried to make it right. Save yourself the headache and stay somewhere that actually values their guests.

We stayed at Bonne Nuit during a quick weekend getaway from nearby Amsterdam, which is only 3 hours away by high-speed train. Worth it. Do it! It was our first time in Paris and it was everything we dreamed it would be. Bonne Nuit and its wonderful hosts, Jean-Luc and his wife, made it even more magical. We arrived around midnight, but Jean-Luc stayed up to personally greet us and give us a brief, whispered tour of the beautiful house. We loved it from the moment we saw the lion-head door knocker on the front door to the stone entry way to the winding, creaking staircase leading to the rooms. We stayed in the Enclos des Templiers room, which overlooks the inner courtyard. The details in the room--the exposed wooden beams, the stone sink, and the absence of a TV--made it simply perfect. The mattress and pillows were perfection. We woke up both mornings to a light breakfast, personally served by Jean-Luc and his wife in the dining area of the house. This is where we also met a couple from Florida and a girl from Hong Kong. Bonne Nuit obviously appeals to a global audience and we could see why! One of the best parts of Bonne Nuit's location is its proximity to the most amazing flea market we've ever been to. Mere steps away are some of the coolest, more interesting treasures you will find anywhere. This flea market is simply spectacular and is worth at least two days' time, if you have it. No joke. We bought several postcards here and Jean-Luc was kind enough to mail them for us after our departure since we left on a Sunday and the post office was closed. So sweet! True hospitality. The B&B is very close to the République metro stop and from there, you can easily criss-cross the entire city. A wonderful stay, through and through. You will definitely get your "bonne nuit's rest" here! ;-)

But if you're looking for a cheap, clean, crash-pad with free wifi and friendly staff, book your room here! I got the "internet rate" of €55/night for six nights. Which is just amazing for the heart of Paris. Well, perhaps not the heart, but a pleasant walk northeast from the heart. And, there are several metro stops close by, which makes the location fairly convenient. If you want the nitty-gritty, here's what I mean by bare bones: -Not a fancy neighborhood, but I felt reasonably safe walking alone -No art on the walls -No carpet in the room (wood floors) -Shower stall barely big enough to stand in, (and I'm pretty petite!) -No furniture besides a bed, 2 chairs, and some built-in shelves -Quite noisy due to traffic and construction (bring earplugs!) But! The free wi-fi is fast and reliable. The entire hotel is very clean. The folks at the desk are extremely nice and speak English. There is a built-in hair-dryer in the bathroom. I arrived way before check-in, so they let me leave my luggage at the desk while I went out to explore a bit, and they even let me into the room a bit before the official check-in since my room was ready early. (Which may sound like a small thing, but a much more expensive hotel in Paris tried to charge me a fee of €80 for an early check-in last year!) In short, you get all your essentials covered on the cheap and save your euros for the fun stuff.

We asked about changing rooms but were told they were all booked that night and we would need to talk to the manager the next day about possibly changing rooms. We were fine with a fifth floor room. We were not fine with: - rickety, falling apart fan instead of air conditioning - no room safe - holes and tears in the curtains - mold / mildew in the closet - no decor in the room at all (I've seen better in hostels) - severe water damage to the floor - phone would only dial down to the desk, not out to local restaurants and stores (would have to go to the front desk to make such calls) - tiny, wall-mounted desk - tiny, wall-mounted bedside tables that looked like they were about to fall off the wall - the fact that the website photos show cute, artsy decorated rooms, but the room we got looked like a prison cell - the fact that the front desk person seemed to speak English well until we started to complain about the room, then suddenly he couldn't understand us We knew this was an older hotel, so we came willing to make allowances for that, but this was absurd. Felt like a classic bait-and-switch. We couldn't get out of there fast enough. Really wish the hotel wasn't going to get paid for the 7 nights we didn't stay there.
