One of the highlights of my time in Munich. I love a good outdoor market and this one is one of the best. Open everyday except Sunday, you can find everything here. Fresh flowers, meats, cheeses, baked goods and fresh baked breads, and of course beer and wine bars. There's something here for everyone and it's always fun checking out all the different booths. I walked over every morning for fresh Cappuccino at Leo's Kaffee and would pick up a pastry at one of the bakeries. In the afternoon, I would stop by the pickle guy and buy a few of the best pickles I've ever eaten. So many choices from sweet to sour, spicy and my favorite a super sour with a spicy horseradish. The long line moves quickly and if you like pickles, you must stop here. read more

This was easily one of my favorite farmers markets in Europe. There was a great selection of fresh produce, condiments, snacks, alcohol, tea, flowers, cheese, and more. Unfortunately, I visited during the holidays, so some stalls weren't open. One shop in particular really caught my attention--it specialized in mustard (Senf) and offered so many varieties I had never seen or even heard of before. I was excited to try everything. Prices ranged from €2 to €7 per bottle, and while I was tempted to buy several, my luggage limitations held me back. In the end, I chose two: black truffle mustard and matcha mustard. This is such a great place! I usually head here right after I arrive into Munich for the express purpose of having a Bratwurst at Schlemmermeyer and walking around this incredible market. I only wish I still lived in Munich as there are so many times I would love to purchase and take home to cook and prepare! You could spend hours in here, walking, people-watching, eating, drinking. Such a wonderful place to take in the city, and I always feel there are more locals here than tourists. Love this place so many places to eat- there's walk ups for sausages and sandwiches and also to buy fresh fruits and flowers and coffee. I enjoy the fruit so much! There are smaller restaurants but here in Munich most require a rsvp in advance by phone call or email. I wanted to try some of the seafood places, but they were full and not accepting walk ins. Der Schorr is a big pub with restaurant and also outdoor bar area that was full all the time and very happening at night with their indoor tenting and dance music. Service is helpful and good value, but it is a farmers market so most vendors close by 8 pm. On a Friday night, we were able to walk into Eataly that borders here and get food without much waiting. read more

Highly, highly recommend visiting Vitualienmarkt if you're visiting Munich. During my first we stopped by most days of our trip and I fell in love with Kaffee Roasterie Viktualienmarkt and went every single day after discovering it. You'll find fresh produce, hot foods, meats, crafts, gifts and so much more at the different vendor booths. We typically visit in the morning or early afternoon and when we've visiting it's been busy but not overly crowded. Especially after visiting the Christkindlmarkt nearby that was so, so crowded, it was a welcome change to have space to look around. We always do our best to speak German while we're here and the different shop owners and staff have always been very kind and many will speak English with you, since they see so many tourists. There is so much to look at in the area, from the historical buildings to the food stalls and all the nearby businesses in brick and mortar spots. This is one of my favorite places to visit while we're in Munich and we really do try to stop by every day to explore, grab coffee and grab some delicious local food. read more

July 8, 2024 - they were closed Sunday and we went there several times to grab snacks and a meal there. It wasn't as big as I thought it was going to be. They had similar foods everywhere. Though, the fruits and vegetables to purchase were amazing to look at. The Juice Bar we got was all right. It is worth going there and is located just a walk away from the MarienPlatz. There was one place there that sold the most olives I've ever seen in my whole life anywhere in the world. At least where I've traveled. I've been to 30 countries and was very impressed. It's a great place to have a beer and lunch if you're in the area. This is a large market with a lot of different places to eat. You have options for restaurant seating outside, but you can also "self-serve" for people who just bought a pretzel and want to sit while they people watch. Pricing is as diverse as the food choices, so don't worry about breaking the bank here. We decided to get service, and it was perfect. Crazy busy area on Saturdays. You can get any kind of food, beer, and some trinkets/clothing/toys. It was so packed and most picnic type seating was gone. Try to get there earlier and not deal with the constant milling of people trying to get what they want. It's a free-for-all, and people will not hesitate to cut in line. As a visitor, I was taken aback by the rudeness. The food was good, but I had a lot of waiting and work to get it. Definitely go early. read more

A famous market in the heart of Old town Munich open every single day! I visited this market no less than about 6x while in Munich for 9 days. I sampled the foods, had gelato, bought gifts, bought coffee, bought wine, bought honey, sat in the beer garden and had a drink.... shopped the nearby shops, went into the church adjacent.... you name it, I basically did it. Fresh flowers, foods, wine, and tons of gifts and crafts can be found here. It is easy to find just near the New and Old Town Halls and is close to the Marienplatz station for ease of getting to from around town. read more

If looking for a nice German market to shop around at, this may be one of your best options. Equipped with gourmet foods, a beer garden, and much more, there's something for everyone. One of my favorite stalls was a fresh juice stand called Saftbar Tretter. The juice was great, the pretzels from the Beer Garden were among the best of the trip, and the ambiance was nice. Open Monday to Saturday and closed on Saturdays, the Viktualienmarkt is the main farmer's market of Munich. It's located quite close to the Marienplatz and so it gets a good crowd of browsers and tourists going through. More than 100 stalls here, we learned on our tour that many of them have been handed down from generation to generation. There are tight regulations on making any significant changes to the stalls as well. In this place since a regal decree by King Maximillian I in 1807, there are flowers, butchers, beers, sausages, spices, cheese, fish, produce and more. I rarely meet a food market I don't like, and this one is one of the greats. It's located in downtown Munich near the tourist areas yet it's not touristy. Sure, some stands sell magnets and beer steins, but this is a local's market where all are welcome. Some stalls are better than others, but you'll find all sorts of goodies from sausages to fresh produce to cheeses to spices. There are several places where you can eat a quick lunch (think hearty soups, grilled sausages, cheese platters). I came here every day during my long weekend in Munich. It's a wonderful place to buy foodie-centric souvenirs (like the homemade wurst spice I bought). Note that this is a totally outdoor market but it still operates in inclement weather -- so bring an umbrella or jacket if it's wet or chilly. read more

We visited here all 3 days and Munich and the place does not disappoint. Such a wide array of fruits and vegetables and cute little eateries all over the place. I even sampled a grape that tasted exactly like a strawberry. Yum!! The biergarten is huge and fills up quickly. The benches without tablecloths are first come and communal seating. So if your sitting at one of the tables, scoot down and make friends. Local and visitors alike all mingle here and it's a real party with that liter of beer in your hand. Viktualienmarkt is a must-stop in Munich. I've been before, and it was so comforting to be back. This is a good place to pick up some souvenirs or gifts, or just to treat yourself. There are lots of tasty food options. Our favorites are Luiginos, which seriously has the most AMAZING panini sandwiches, and the kaffeerösterei, which has some pretty tasty roasts and tastier florentines (plus chandeliers for ambiance). There are tons of fresh produce vendors, as wells as spices, dessert stalls, wineries, and tons more. I nabbed some delectable truffle brie, that was pricey, but so worth the splurge. Though it's in the heart of a tourist area it doesn't feel touristy and is full of lots of authentic flavors and sellers, and is frequented by Germans and Munich-dwellers as well as visitors. read more

This is such a cool place to take in the culture of daily life. When we came, the fall foliage was just starting to turn, and the weather was sunny but cool, which made all the walking around outside a breeze. There's so much amazing stuff here! Lots and lots of shops with fresh food and drink that you can check out, and plenty of specialty shops like cheese or fruit. I also really appreciated the artisans selling their crafts; there were a ton of people creating beautiful wreaths and floral arrangements, and their booths always smelled heavenly. I'd definitely recommend a visit. It's also quite close to the city center, so you can make a trip of both things at once. read more

This open space is great for food, drinks and being social! Even the layout of the long communal tables placed close together encourages social interaction! There are a few seating areas, near the center, with many little shops, take away restaurants, butchers, and more - where you can grab what you want and come and sit down here. There is almost anything you'd want here! This market has a great atmosphere, great food and is overall just a great time. Everything we've had here was absolutely delicious and was one of my favourite spots in Munich. You can't go wrong with a beer and a sausage! We went to Müller-Brot AG for German donuts! They had a deal where you can get 3 for 3 euros or something even cheaper! I remember it being really cheap. But yeah the donuts definitely satisfied that sweet tooth! I tried sausages from two places, Schlemmermeyer GmbH & Co. KG , which is on the north side of the market - and Biergarten am Viktualienmarkt, which had sausages and beers! They were both so good, but I think the first place was slightly tastier and juicier. But honestly the difference is barely anything. read more

This market was the highlight of my visit to Munich. We visited on an overcast summer day and it was lightly raining. The market was packed and it was hard to find somewhere to sit but after about 5 minutes of walking around we found a table with some other people and had a great time. Everyone was very friendly. My sister and I both ordered sausages, pretzels, and beer. It was a great meal and the prices were very good. After we ate we walked around the market. There are all types of stalls with items such as hot foods, beer, cheeses, meats, ice cream, cookies, home decorations and souvenirs. It was a great way to spend an hour or so. We were able to purchase gifts and buy an ice cream cone. The market is located next to a plaza with old builds that are beautiful. I absolutely loved visiting the market and if I ever decided to return to Munich this market and the nearby area would be the only reason. You will need to make sure you bring cash. None of the vendors we encountered accepted plastic. Luckily there was an ATM in the market but you will pay high fees to use it. read more

Without a doubt this was one of the best places I stumbled upon during my time in Munich. It is a vast and popular outdoor market that's full of beer, food, farmer's market items and little trinkets to buy. It was also rather lovely to visit around Easter weekend given the atmosphere and the lovely crowds. There was no shortage of appetizing food to gaze at and enjoy here. The main beer garden in the center of the square was also packed and bustling all around. The next time I'm in Munich, I'm definitely stopping by again as all of the items here looked delicious. The proximity of this place to Marienplatz also makes it a very appealing place to visit if you're looking to take in a lot of local sights, sounds and food. read more
