Owners of the very popular restaurant Rad has opened up their sister restaurant Champ Canteen in…read morethe very convenient location of the heart of Newmarket. Again bringing similar vibes to Rad, snug in a chic and bright location. The menu follows a subtle tone of Vietnamese flavours influenced from the owners background. I think the toastie idea is great - that kiwi favourite - having your usual flavours with a gourmet twist on it - but...I think although us Kiwis love our white bread - for the steeper price being charged, they need to gourmet that bread up to really make it worth its while - they serve a delicious banh mi bun at Rad - why not bring some of that delicious dough to Champ? I snuck a 2nd quiet lunch in on a breezy Sunday afternoon. I am a sucker for soft shell crab. I must order it at every restaurant that offers it #Crabsnob. The soft shell crab salad was beautifully light, without the dressing overwhelming the salad. The caramel salad bowl, the salmon was perfectly cooked and delicately simple. The menu brings a step up from your comfort food, bringing in flavours you know and love. Its the type of food I happily cook at home, which is great, but doesn't wow me knowing its a menu I could confidently replicate. Although in saying that, it's always nice when someone else cooks for you. Finish off your lunch with a comforting doughnut - the picture doesn't do it justice, but it was a soft chewy dough without being too sweet. Rating: Food: 8/10 Service: 9/10 Value for Money: Good

My ethnicity is Vietnamese so it is always nice to find when we find Vietnamese restaurants. Last time my sister and her husband ordered some salads and were raving about them. This time, we tried to order one of the salads, the mango salad, but they informed us that the chef did not have any of the mango salads tonight because he did not have any good mangos. In a way it was kind of a bummer because we were all looking forward to it, but I do appreciate that the chef cares about the quality of his food and would rather be up front about it. Instead we ordered: Sen platter, the grilled market fish, the Vietnamese pancake (aka banh xeo), and clay pot caramelised pork belly. Sen platter - assortment of spring rolls, summer rolls, fried squid, and fried pork mince pieces - pretty tasty. It is a good starter to get a little bit of everything if you cant decide on one appetizer. Vietnamese pancake - pretty authentic. It was a little bit burnt/too crispy for our taste. It came with shrimp, pork, bean sprout, and mung bean, which are the true authentic ingredients for a traditional banh xeo Grilled market fish - i can't quite remember the name of the fish it was, but it was a white fish and it was prepared in the Cha Ca Thanh Long style (Hanoi style fish with turmeric and dill) served with rice noodles. I really enjoyed this and it was also pretty authentic to the traditional dish as well. Caramelised pork belly - a bit fatty, but still delicious. caramelisation done was very similar to what i would expect back at home. It comes in a cute clay pot as well. The ambiance is also great, they have a really cute upstairs area which gives it a nice authentic and intimate feel. I think this would be a cute place to go on a date as well. Service was also very good. The servers were attentive and friendly. Overall I would definitely recommend this place to anyone and I know I will be back as well.

The mango salad was virtually all Bean sprouts, and came out with beef in it when we are pescatarians. The vegetable curry was not fresh and consisted of soggy and overcooked vegetables, no seasoning, just a pile of mush! The fish could have been chicken for all I know, the colour and texture was disturbing and the dish came with soggy vermicelli virtually inedible. The wine was the only light in this darkness. Nothing worse than going away from a place and feeling unsatisfied at the lack of quality!

The delivery guy only delivered three of the nine dishes I ordered online, and I so I had to go and order the rest directly and collect myself. The Uber Delivery guy seemed to think nothing was wrong and I should call Uber if I have a complaint. Apparently Uber Eats gets orders botched now and then. Obviously I have issues with using Uber Eats again in the future. However, Asian Ruby's food, once unpacked and dished up to my family, was a true top class flavor experience. The pho soup was fresh and flavoursome, and other dishes we had were bursting with flavor as well. I really liked the Hanoi spring rolls, and the chicken and fennel salad. The prawn and pineapple fried rice was also popular. The portions were all very generous, noting the lemongrass chicken dish was a bit on the small side as a snack sized item. The pho soups are arguably enough for two people per order if you are thinking of ordering other dishes. It's all delicious, as you would expect of Vietnamese food, so be bold and have fun! So while I'm very grumpy with Uber eats and for a moment, Asian Ruby by proxy, I do want to record that the food was extremely tasty and that the duty manager at Asian Ruby did her very best to quickly solve the issue and get the rest of the order ready for me to collect. I fully intend to order more food from Asian Ruby in the future (or dine in at the rather pleasant premises that I visited to collect the balance of my order), but probably not through Uber Eats.....
