Every. Single. Year... I go back and forth about posting this. But I'm at a point in my life, where…read moreI'm choosing not to stay silent about what I've been through, regardless of whether a lot of time has passed. So here are just some of the instances that happened during my time at this church, as a young 20 yr old trying to find peace after some trauma. This all happened several years ago, but clearly is something that has weighed heavily on me since then, and was ultimately the demise of my attendance with the church. 1) I was told very private information about other members of the church by leaders... information that should've never been shared, and information I had no business knowing. "Don't tell anyone I told you this, but..." -the woman's pastor. What had she been telling others about me? 2) being told "your works do not define who you are" and then being told that I'm not doing enough to serve the church after bending my back over for them and the children's ministry. 3) This is while I was venting about an unrequited love... Women's pastor: "did you have any kind of intimacy with this guy?" Me: "yes" (In my head: we kissed and that's it) Women's pastor: "well, when I was your age, I was a whore too" (those were her actual words) 4) "you're too young to know what real hurt is." Told to me by a member after I told the women's group that my boyfriend died of cancer 5) women's pastor: "are you an alcoholic?" Me: "no. I grew up around alcoholics and no i am not an alcoholic" Women's pastor: "well, alcoholics usually say they aren't..." I told her she basically just called me an alcoholic and then she gaslighted me into believing that it was my own insecurities and pride that took it that way... looking back on it now, no one else would have taken what she said in a different way than I did. As you can see, my review is mostly about one person. My experience is complex, like many others. I was easily influenced during these years, as I was desperate for healing, which is why I think I stayed even after seeing the red flags. Most people that come to church, come with trauma. I understand the idea in which people think their own healing journeys are the "answer" to everyone else's... it's not. But that is how I was treated. I did have positive experiences here too. The actual sermons and worship are really great. The members are typically great. It's a beautifully diverse church and I really loved how there were many different people from many different backgrounds. I found this church out of desperation for healing. My relationship with God strengthened at the time, but the way the women's pastor treated me through the mentioned experiences above, was gross. What's worse is that the two other members I confided in about my experiences with the woman's pastor, was not surprised. I quit the church cold turkey after reflecting on a year of my experiences with her.

The staff and congregates genuinely love the Lord; the worship time is upbeat and intimate, glorifying our God, And the teachings by both the lead Pastor and Associate Pastor are incredible!! You actually leave having learned something, being encouraged and maybe convicted, but all in love! I could go on, but you really need to check it out for yourself. You'll be blessed and your search just might end as mine did!?!

I have never felt so unwanted in a church. My kids attend awaken elementary school, love it. We…read moretypically attend Hope church and love it but have thought about finding a church closer. So we went to Awaken today, as my kid was performing for Easter service. I was immediately greeted with my one year-old being told I needed to sit in the back. I explained that my other child would be on stage. I was told I needed to sit in the back regardless, after some back-and-forth they allowed me to sit near the front, but told me after worship I needed to move... I was then told the same thing by three other ushers that walked past and seen I had a toddler. I handed my toddler off to family and went to retrieve my daughter who had just came off stage and was told she couldn't come sit by us and I needed to take her to the "kid area" at this point I was fuming, it's Easter... every service should be family friendly, but especially holiday services. After the sixth person told me I needed to take my kids and go to the back... Mind you they were not being loud at all and worship was still going on, so even if they had you wouldn't have been able to hear them... I went to the back to finish out service... Two minutes into the service, I seen two different ushers tell a toddler to be quiet and try to hush them with a toy and they approached the mom and the mother took the child and walked out... again this kid was babbling not even loudly.... I followed behind and will never enter a church service here again. This should be marketed as adult only church, or church where children should be seen and not heard.... Their family room had seats along every wall so you couldn't even see the service as the tv was behind and above your head, it was full with no where to sit. There was no couches or anywhere to lay a sleeping baby. I took my toddler to the foyer and there was no where to sit so I went outside and had to sit on a step for remaining of service. I went to look for the pastor after service and he was no where to be found. I've been to many churches here and all have been family friendly... except the one who literally owns a school... I will drive my 30 minutes to Hope Church where my kids are wanted and families are not just welcome but they are gracefully accommodated. Also.... I was talking to another church goer here and she was saying their priorities must be messed up because they have a coffee shop in the foyer and they sell coffee and bakery items... you can take the coffee in but you cannot eat the bakery items in the chapel... I'm just in disbelief at this place... now I'm rethinking the whole school aspect.
