I have a long association with Victoria Park, as I used to go here all the time with my grandpa as a kid, fishing for sticklebacks or sailing round the huge pond in a rowing boat during the summer.
Sadly the rowing boats, which used to be availible for hire, are now but a memory. Though the place still has a large playpark to attract the kids, plus football pitches, basketball courts, tennis courts and a putting green. In the summer an ice cream van also sits here for the kids to enjoy. Even the ducks and swans are well fed, with the amounts of children chucking them bread.
The park is quitre large, with numerous paths going up hills, down hills and into all sorts of nooks and crannies. As well as the big pond, there is also a smaller pond, plus lots of beautiful flowers and plants helping to contribute to the picturesque scene.
While the grass and plants are very well-mantained, the area around the main pond is not so pristine. The old benches and bins are a bit dirty and rickety. The pond itself is much better than it was a decade ago, where for a while it was very dirty and full of waste, though it is still very murky. The small footbridge on the southern edge, which leads to a small island is now closed and is a visual eyesore given its state of disrepair. The scene here isn't helped by the copious amount of bird droppings, though until somebody can pleasantly persuade the gulls and pigeons to hang out elsewhere I can't see this being avoided.
The park is popular with families, dog walkers, old couples and joggers. It seems to be ned-free most of the time thankfully, though I wouldn't dare venture down at night to see what it is like then just in case. read more
