I read that they now serve 777,504 retail customers which means a hell of alot of croissants. Of course this place is very posh, and probally even the yummy mummy's of islington can't afford such luxuries. I can't say that I bought anything here due to the prices, but I had a poke around and stuffed Portefeuille selection looked marvelous ( that means stuffed pastries to us common english).

The cakes at Pauls are heavenly and I never can resist if I pass one. I especially love their chocolate type mousse cake and carrot cake. This is a tidy, open space along a strip of somewhat underwhelming shops in Hendon. I was glad to…read morehave found it. The pastries are gorgeous, and, for the calorie and coin counter, some are 'mini' versions of the usual-sized goodies (think: croissants, pain au chocos, and sows' ears--don't know what ya'll call 'em here) at a fraction of the price. The loaves of bread (challah, white, wheat, light rye) seem to come both bagged and unbagged. The bagels are displayed in open baskets out on the floor and appear to be sold singly. Help yourself...to a pair of tongs! I was surprised and happy to see the tongs. Too bad there weren't any judiciously placed near the unbagged loaves. I stood next to a man who picked up around five separate loaves of wheat (and one bagette) in both hands in order to caress their middles and squeeze gently on their crusts. At one point it looked as if he were going to bring a loaf up to his ear. I expect he was hoping to hear the ocean. After all the fingering, he actually bought one! I bought a small, bagged rye loaf for £1.55. After watching the 'Bread Whisperer' do his thing on the wheat loaves, I left the naked bagels untouched. I'll be back, however, for some Hammentaschen and mini sows' ears!

Usually the soup is tomato which tastes like a watered down version of Heinz canned soup. Still that is actually how I like it (I always add water to my canned soup at home). They have a good selection of cakes and sandwiches but don't expect anything unique or unusual. Gregg's in the Watling is small and has been there for years. It is really the only bakers in the area so they always seem to be busy. The bread and rolls always taste fresh and the prices are pretty unbeatable.

It's silly to try and say which establishment is "better" - there are so many factors on which that call can be made. Undoubtedly, Climpson provide better quality. But do they provide better value? I'd argue no. For just over two quid you can get a steak pasty and an apple and blackcurrent slice. That's a lot of happiness per pound. The bread's pretty good too. And cheap.

We ordered the build your own, where you choose your bread, meat (or cheddar, avocado, etc), 2 topping items (like lettuce and tomato), and a sauce (pesto, mayo, spicy mustard, hummus). Our order came out within about 5 minutes on a Tuesday at 12:15/12:30, though I think once the line got longer, the wait time increased too. One huge positive is that the service was great when my husband's sandwich with hummus was not as expected (it was like horseradish or spicy wasabi, rather than the mild American hummus we're used to), and they provided him with a new sandwich at no charge. The one negative was the seats are not very comfortable. But otherwise, a good experience.

I chose Greggs, out of curiosity, as a lunch option while shopping in Hounslow…read more The cafe section was preceded by a bakery section. I think. There were about two shelves, which contained doughnuts, muffins, and loaves which looked very neat and identical. Moving on to the cafe section, they had yogurts, salads, pasties, cakes, Danish pastries, croques, sandwiches, pasta, coffee, and other quintessential cafe food items. The prices were really appealing, with pasties costing about £1.50 and a bowl of pasta for £2.99. A steak bake pasty and an iced apple cream Danish cost me exactly £3. The steak bake was puff pastry filled with beef stew. I loved the warm, creamy and hearty taste of the beef stew, which were quite generous chunks. The Danish pastry sandwiched a thin layer of apple and sauce under a thick poof of whipped cream, storybook style. The apple's taste was drowned out under the cream which was a bit much, and I could only occasionally feel its gooey texture. Greggs is a good option for a cheap cafe lunch, with tasty-looking pastries and a few other limited options for savoury items, which includes customisable sandwiches (Emma: "The lady took forever to make my sandwich, and look, all my onions are falling out.") and fish fingers. Not somewhere to return to day-after-day, but alright when on a budget and for convenience's sake.
