I attended a last-minute wedding the past weekend and I needed a quick/cheap rental, so I confided in Victor's Tuxedo's to provide a semi-reliable suit.
I am giving a 1 star review on this vendor for the following reasons:
Demanding a passport as collateral in case I didn't return the suit.
Now, I'm well aware that most rental places ask for some sort of a deposit (which I had already made) to reserve a suit. What came as a surprise was when they asked to leave my ORIGINAL PASSPORT. When I asked if I could leave a scanned copy of my ID, they refused and stated I had to provide my original passport. I don't know about you, but I didn't feel comfortable with the idea that my passport would be in the hands of complete strangers in a foreign country. I'm not too judgmental, but from the looks of it, I'd say I was profiled pretty hard and the person I spoke to automatically assumed I wasn't from Tijuana. I played along and said, fine, I'll leave my passport. The day I went to pick up the suit I played dumb and said I didn't have a passport on me. They didn't look too enthused and said I'd have to leave a $100 (dollars) deposit in case I didn't return the suit. I may have been over reacting, but I wasn't too happy at this point with their service, so I just paid the $100 and checked out my suit.
Quality of the suit.
I'm not terribly picky when it comes to materials or anything of that nature, but it wasn't until I put it on that I realized the majority of flaws it had. Some of the buttons were terribly sewn on and you could tell there were some major repairs made to the suit (stitching marks). When I arrived at the wedding, I was walking to the hall and I realized one of my buttons had FALLEN OFF. My friends and I retraced our steps and found the button in the parking lot. Fortunately, one of my friends had a sewing kit and we sewed on the button and reinforced some of the other loose ones to prevent any other accidents. I also had to trim off a lot of loose sewing yarn that was just hanging there from previous repairs (not made by me).
Not that it matters much, since you can buy a tie for a fairly cheap price, but the quality of the tie was terrible. It wouldn't stay up and the buttons on my shirt kept getting revealed. You couldn't make your own knot since the tie was essentially sewn down to only allow one form of knot. This was really frustrating for me.
Size of suit
Another thing that threw me off was that there was no pre-fitting date before checking out the suit. They measured me once and that was it. The suit ended up being a bit too large and I was a little uncomfortable during the entire wedding. Not much I could do since the suit didn't belong to me and I was out of time.
Overall, I will never rent from this place again and would recommend anyone from doing so if you don't want to risk going through everything I did.
