The crown jewel of Via Mizner is the five story tower home Addison Mizner built for himself on Worth Avenue. In 1993 it was added to the US Register of Historic Places. Via Mizner means Mizners path. Mizner built his home in 1923 after he finished the Everglades Club across the street in 1918.
In addition to the house Mizner created a European style village to surround it. Features of the area include wrought iron balconies, tiled stairways, terracotta barrel roofs, and stucco walls. There are twenty shops in Via Mizner. You can dine in restaurants like Renato's and Pizza Al Fresco. There are also residential apartments. Mizner came up with the idea of creating a mixed use place where you could shop and live.
In the restaurant that is outside the living room of Addison Mizner's home is the grave site of his spider monkey Johnnie Brown. it is said that Johnnie's spirit still haunts the area so dishes of bananas are left out to appease his spirit. Next to his resting place is the grave of Laddie who was the Scottish Terrier that belonged to the woman who lived in the house after Mizner.
The charm of Via Mizner is around every nook and corner. The Mediterranean Revival, Spanish Colonial Revival, and Venice architecture combine with South Florida Palm trees and the tropics to create a truly magical place. Whether you are dining, shopping, or just strolling through Mizners vision for Palm Beach is just as stunning today as when he created it. read more
