Animal Medical Center Of Hattiesburg

I had to drive 2+ hours from Jackson, MS to Hattiesburg to Animal Medical Center on April 29, 2024…read morefor emergency surgery. My Golden Retriever, Max, was bleeding into a splenic mass and was anemic. He was 11-12 years old. I am a physician, an anesthesiologist for over 40 years, so I understood the gravity of the situation. Even before I arrived, Dr. Mayfield, II, called me on the phone to check on us. When we arrived, the employees immediately carried him out of my car for emergency surgery for treatment and diagnosis. Dr. Mayfield thoroughly discussed what we would do if the diagnosis was dire. They started blood and took him back to surgery within 30 minutes. The diagnosis was dire: he had a splenic mass full of tumor, with metastasis to his pancreas, liver, bowel, and kidney. Dr. Mayfield called me and took me back to surgery to see Max under anesthesia, and I said my goodbyes and let him go.... Dr. Mayfield then spent additional mourning moments with me and was very kind. I then made cremation arrangements and delivery of the remains to me. I also asked for histology on the tumors, as I had lost another Golden, Luka, age 13 or14, to hemangiosarcoma last year. Dr. Mayfield called me about 2 weeks later to say the pathologist reported high-grade lymphoma. The entire treatment, including the cremation, was very expensive--about $4000. As a physician, I understand the high costs of surgery, blood transfusion, anesthesia and other veterinary technicians. Everyone at the Center was extremely kind to me throughout my ordeal at their clinic. I was so thankful that there was a full-service surgery/ICU clinic available to me on that day. From the moment I arrived there, I felt that Max would be well-cared for by Dr. Mayfield and his staff, and he was.

I heard bad reviews about this place and I really didn't want to bring her here but it was my only option. They gave and her xray and they told me there was some gas in her stomach. I'm thinking "Oh okay they'll probably give me some medicine and I'll move on with my day" Right? Wrong. Out of nowhere they started suggesting she had swallowed some string even though they couldn't see it on the xray?? They were telling me it could be fatal if she didn't get surgery in 5-6 days. They gave me a $4-7,000 estimate!!! For reference I am a broke 20 year old, no way I could afford that. I told them I would take her somewhere else and I did. I paid $500 that day for an xray. Took her to the vet in my hometown that was 2+ hours away. Turns out she just had a UTI!! She stayed two nights over there and all I had to pay was $225 for everything including her medicine. This place is a scam please never take your pet here.

I took my 8 week old puppy there, she tested positive for Covid. She received injections, but I…read morewas never offered the newest drugs available to help save my puppy after a couple of days of giving her the medicine I was sent home with she was not getting any better. There was a light rain thread of a hurricane and their doors were closed. I called a nearby vet, previously advanced pet. They took me right away. They were very concerned about my puppy and she is in the hospital receiving the upmost care. I feel like the front desk. People were not compassionate as I had to go back the next day. They did not give me enough medicine for five days so I had to go back the next day to tell them I had not enough medicine to last me five days. I was treated like I had spilt the medicine out because they had given me the correct amount I just wanted my puppy to feel better. I just wanted support and kindness. I think this place is not the best place in Hattiesburg for your pet. That's exactly how I felt. I won't be taking my puppy there and I will tell anyone not to take their puppy there.

Our family has been blessed with many types of family members. We have over the years, required the…read moreservices of several veterinarians within the Hattiesburg area. Regrettably, we have been continually disappointed. Most of our extended family has been of the feline (purr)suasion. After many years of association with Town and Country Vets I believe I can safely say, I have never been as pleased with the care that is provided to my felines. They are extremely attuned to the cat psyche and are very willing to take extra steps to connect with these patients. I have not found this to be true ANYWHERE else. Felines are not canines. They need vets to understand their specific needs. Though TOWN AND COUNTRY ANIMAL HOSPITAL care for many types of animals, they definitely have a knack for the cats!!!

I will start by saying we have used this clinic for many years now and never had any sort of…read moreissues. This year however we returned from our vacation to a bill that was more than double what it should have been due to her getting "sick" while there. She had vomiting and diarrhea for days and never has any sort of GI issues. We were never contacted to let us know there was anything out of the ordinary going on. I cook her food due to the fact that she is a heart patient and down a good many teeth so she can't eat hard food. We took everything individually labeled with date and time. Things couldn't have been any simpler had it been done correctly. It's pretty obvious that her food was mishandled, left out of the fridge or something to that extent. Her food was her happy time every day and now she shakes violently when offered the food. I made something with a different protein combo and she scarfed it down so it's not an appetite issue. As if that weren't enough her hind legs are extremely bruised. She can barely put any weight on her left one and cries if you pick her up and it has any pressure on it. It's very visible in pictures yet the doctor said he couldn't see anything without seeing her. I refuse to make her go back in the place as she is traumatized after the treatment she got the last week. If this is the best they have to offer for boarding, they should simply not offer that as a service. I say all of this simply to keep anyone else from going through the same thing we are dealing with. The last thing you expect to do is take a playful happy girl to the vet to board and getting back an injured traumatized girl. Also something caused by mishandling should never be the financial responsibility of the pet parent.
