While our apartment was a bit small, it was comfortable and clean and we had very few issues with the property itself. Any time there was an issue, maintenance was super fast in responding. Still, I had a few issues that barred me from giving this place four or even five stars: 1. The same maintenance issue often persisted two or three times until it actually got fixed. This was usually not a problem with the maintenance per se, but with either the particular appliance that needed to be replaced or with the way the apartment was built. For instance, we were not told that, when the apartment was originally built, it was a one bedroom, and so the "central" HVAC did not actually go into the master bedroom, but instead was "pushed" in there through a ventilating system. Needless to say, it wasn't very effective and that room was cold in the winter, requiring us to buy a separate electric heater. 2. Communication was subpar. Besides not being told certain things about the apartment upon or prior to move in (as mentioned above), there were numerous occasions where emails would not be responded to unless I followed up at least once or went directly to the office, or were responded to very late. Processes were not communicated clearly either. For example, my wife and I had found a house nine months into the lease and I went to talk with the property manager about what that process would look like. I was told that they would take care of the advertising and I would be provided with a pro-rated reimbursement once they found someone. There was no formal written documentation of this, and I never received any, despite requesting it. The way it was told me made it sound like once they found someone, I would receive the reimbursement. Instead I was later told via email that I would be reimbursed once that tenant moved in, which was only a few weeks from the end of my lease. So rather than a two month reimbursement, which is what I was hoping for, I got about a three week reimbursement (which I still haven't received, even though the tenant moved in over a week ago). Cheswick Village is a beautiful community and they are building it steadily (they've had a playground there for two years, and recently installed a fitness area), and it's extremely comfortable and convenient. I would just recommend understanding what you are signing up for, asking lots of questions, and getting everything in writing before moving forward.

I love how conveniently located the community is - it's got bus service to Purdue's campus and easy access to shopping in downtown Lafayette and along Sagamore Parkway in West Lafayette. I could bike to campus or Lafayette if I wanted, and the Wabash Heritage trail is close. I also didn't want an all-student complex when I came to graduate school, and the community is home to a mix of students, young professionals, and young families. They're pet friendly as well. I like that the apartments were cheap enough that I could afford a two-bedroom with my S.O. since that second bedroom has become a dedicated home office. I'm at home 90% of the time now during COVID, and the dedicated space has been a godsend. Also, the internet speed is great - no glitchy calls for me. Actual quality of apartments is decent for the rent, and generally things are reasonably quiet.

Downhill fast after staff changes (UPDATED)…read more Staff is hostile and manipulative, promising a week to move and a tour (3/26), then changing it to 48 hours and no tour when i signed(5/19), now they're saying a day(6/24). I explained that im handicapped due to an accident to Eric but he made it obvious he does not care. Im told that "bart" is the office "boss" but he has no last name, email, or phone number. The woman who worked on 3/29 convinced me to upgrade but no one was willing to find out her name (Faith) or even go look at who was scheduled that day. Everything is "i don't know" with the attitude of "i don't care". I wont even go to the gym for my physical therapy anymore because its so uncomfortable.

I documented nearly everything with photos, videos, emails, and maintenance requests because the problems were so persistent. The building itself was in terrible condition. The supposedly locked front entrance regularly had homeless people inside the lobby. Residents would prop the front door open with rocks in the middle of the night, defeating any security. The parking garage and security gate were broken for extended periods multiple times. Trash constantly overflowed in the lobby, abandoned packages sat untouched for months, and the hallways frequently smelled like rotten food and dirty floors. My apartment wasn't properly prepared before I moved in. It had clearly not been cleaned or inspected, despite my lease stating there would be a move-in inspection signed by both the landlord and tenant. I was never given that inspection document and didn't even know it existed until move-in day. The balcony was covered with mold and bug nests. I requested it be cleaned multiple times and was repeatedly told it had to wait until spring. Spring came and went, and nothing was done. Maintenance was consistently slow. Small repairs often took weeks. I specifically requested that maintenance notify me before arriving later in the day because I work night shifts and sleep during normal business hours. They ignored that request. One day they woke me around 2:00 PM for a dishwasher issue I'd reported over two weeks earlier. Their "repair" was handing me a bottle of dishwasher soap. The noise issues were even worse. I submitted multiple complaints with gigabytes of video evidence because management specifically asked for proof. Once I sent it, it was essentially ignored. I was repeatedly told they "couldn't discuss conversations with other tenants," while the upstairs neighbor continued blasting bass-heavy music past 2:00 AM. I eventually had to call the police multiple times just to get some peace. The final straw was the air conditioning. My A/C barely worked for nearly two months. I submitted maintenance requests, followed up repeatedly, and was constantly told it had been fixed or that they were "working on it." Several requests were marked complete even though the unit still wasn't functioning, and I recorded videos showing it couldn't cool the apartment. I eventually submitted a formal notice to terminate my lease under the lease terms if the issue couldn't be fixed. Management waited until less than a week before the deadline to claim my notice was "invalid" because they had supposedly been "diligently" working on it. On the final day of my lease, I stopped by before returning my keys. Suddenly there was a brand-new A/C unit waiting to be installed. The walls smelled freshly painted, the balcony had finally been swept, and the temporary window A/C was running. I photographed everything. After months of being told the problem had been addressed, the permanent fix conveniently appeared only after I had already moved out. I had also requested a final walkthrough after spending two full weekends cleaning the apartment. I took photos and videos showing it was left cleaner than when I received it. When I returned my keys, I simply mentioned seeing the new A/C unit. The property manager immediately became defensive. When I pointed out that this confirmed what I'd been saying for months--that the problem had never actually been fixed--she became angry, called me a dick, told me to "get the **** out," and gave me the middle finger as she locked the office door behind me. I've kept the emails, maintenance requests, photos, and videos documenting all of this. If you're considering renting here, I strongly recommend looking elsewhere. Between the security issues, poor maintenance, ignored complaints, and the way management handled legitimate repair requests, I cannot recommend this property to anyone.

They kept many of the elements of the old office space, so it is not just another apartment but has a fantastic historic vibe to it. The building is beautiful, clean, extremely quiet and seems primarily filled with grad students and more mature professionals. The building is within walking distance to just about everything, and the free CityBus to Purdue picks up and drops off within steps from our door. Guaranteed lot parking is available for an up-charge, or you can use free street parking just a few blocks over. I work and attend class at Purdue and just walk anytime I can; it is about 1.5 miles each way but is the perfect way to get a little 30 minutes of cardio to start your day. Highly recommended!
