I was expecting some grand view, but honestly, it's not all that great. Unfortunately, the driveway is very rough, with roots pushing up the pavement. So be very careful when driving here. It would be very easy to smack the bottom of your car onto the pavement. The day that I visited, there was lots of trash around. In addition, the signs are covered with graffiti. So while I like the idea of a memorial, honestly, it's not worth more than a minute or so. Could use some TLC and better maintenance.

And then I kept walking on Solano until I got to San Pablo. And kept walking on San Pablo until I got to the shops (or the sole former Emporium that used to be here, back before El Cerrito Plaza had the plaza it has today. After walking through the Broadway Tunnel recently, I remembered my walk through here and am glad we don't have a Broadway Tunnel. Sure, this tunnel is darker. But it's SHORTER. It's only about 500 feet, more or less, hardly a tenth of a mile. The Broadway Tunnel, on the other hand, is a third of a mile of sheer pollution.

Why is it called a "station?" Because back in the old days, street cars travelled up and down the island. Their stops were called stations. Today, Chestnut Station is a cluster of shops, cafes, and a variety of other businesses. Saint Joseph School and Notre Dame High are nearby. The popular Encinal Nursery is down the street. I mainly come to Chestnut Station to shop at Chestnut Market. I can usually save a trip to the supermarket by simply grabbing the basics at this medium-sized market. Chestnut Station is located at Encinal Ave & Chestnut Street. It's also close to Willow Street, which is a popular route to the Southshore Shopping Center. Wow, talk about an engineering site to see in Walnut Creek! If you so happen to be running,…read morewalking, biking, or hiking through the Contra Costa Iron Horse Trail, then you've probably been stopped by this clam-shaped suspension bridge upon first sight. As you cross it, you'll start to notice the steel side towers that basically look like an outer shell of a clam. Attached from tower to tower are the hanging support cables. From the top, the hanging cables loop once, hold up, and essentially suspend the walkway. The walkway is only about 10 feet wide, but the length of the bridge extends across the busy eight lanes of Treat Blvd. To me, this landmark really represents the good people that live in this city. This is one modern bridge that I feel people should really (for once) stop, analyze, and appreciate the geometry of this structure. Although this bridge isn't historic or has the popularity of the Golden Gate or Oakland-Bay Bridge, the gems of San Francisco; This architectural beauty truly is the pearl of Walnut Creek.

BRIDGE TROLL The…read moreonly trolls that pass under this bridge are the ones driving up and down Treat. I'm sure lots of motorists fall into that category, especially around commute times. But you can safely cross over Treat Blvd. using this pedestrian/cyclist bridge, and you don't even have to wait for the light to turn green. The walking trails and canal trails lead all around town. Intersections with cool bridges for the exercise enthusiasts make these trails even more enjoyable. I love walking over streets and not making cars stop while I try to get across.

A friend took my husband and me to spend a day at Point San Pablo. It was an amazing and beautiful…read moreplace. As we drove up the "long and winding road" we all felt our cares and stress from the San Francisco traffic fall away. We ate at the restaurant, listened to some great jazz in the bar area and had fun walking around the property. Our friend discovered two burning man sculptures that have found permanent homes here. On was a tall steel structure that had a steel tree on top of it. It was really nice but when we walked inside it....OMG, we were transported to another world or an alternate reality, I don't know which but it was astonishingly beautiful inside this tiny room. I will attach some photos. The other burning man sculpture was a metal globe, hard to describe. It was nice and was at the end of a long road in a beautiful spot.

I was out this weekend showing my friend the brighter side of Richmond when we wandered into Point…read moreSan Pablo. It's on the back of an oil refinery (which sounds more ominous than it actually is) and is home to the Point San Pablo Yacht Club and the East Brother Island B&B. Getting to point San Pablo is like going back in time. It's completely untouched from the days when it was inhabited by factory workers (their homes remain boarded up). The sometimes gravel road is long and winding, and it's almost like going on a historical tour of Richmond. It's amazing because you can see how much promise the city actuallly holds if someone would just invest in development of the area. There is so much amazing greenery and the ocean views are unbelievable. At one point you can get a full view of the Richmond/San Raphael Bridge (Who knew it was that long). It's a cool place to stop by on your way somewhere else. It's not much for hiking since everything is gated and access is so limited, but the sunset is totally worth it.
