In Zaans Schans, you'll find 4 windmills: 1 green and 3 brown. One of the brown windmills is De Kat (The Cat) which is a dye mill built in 1782 by the river Zaan. There used to be a thousand windmills in this area that processed barley, rice, paper, mustard, wood, cooking oil, tobacco, hemp, etc. but due to industrialization and technology, only a few windmills are left.
I have a fascination with pinwheels, windmills and anything powered by wind. The area where De Kat is located is just picturesque. Grass, trees, flowers and a river.
You can go in this windmill, see the parts and the dyes it has produced and climb up the steep and narrow ladder. There's only one way to go up and down so, if there is a line going one direction, you're not going anywhere if you're going the opposite direction. Once you reach the top and step outside, enjoy the view and the fresh air.
This place is worth the visit. They have a gift shop where you can buy dyes, paints and pastel crayons. There's also a cheese shop nearby. read more
