The selection on my visit included brown rice with mixed vegetables, mattar paneer (peas, tomatoes, and cheese cubes), vadai (lentil fritters with yogurt sauce), roasted potatoes, roasted cucumber with cheese, and a three-cheese lasagna with tomato sauce. All of the items were prepared simply using almost no spices--some of the dishes had the appearance and inspiration of Indian food but certainly lacked the soul. While the flavors could have been better, this still made for a healthy vegetarian lunch that came at an affordable price, and the meal was capped off with a dessert of bananas baked with brown sugar.

It was crowded with persons waiting on the outside to be seated. It seems the larger your group the longer the wait. I didn't have a waiting problem though as it was just me. The service is very fast so I suspect the lines is simply based on the popularity of the restaurant. Your wait time for seating may be 10 - 15 mins, that's only an estimate as I didn't wait. The restaurant is small with a homely feel but maybe they have outgrown the location. It is interesting to note that there are many other restaurants on that street but they all seem empty.

This was our favourite meal of the trip and we had some amazing ones. We were famished and so…read moreordered a lot of food, which was much more than we could handle. We ordered: -Guacamole with banana chips: this was a nice appy to start the meal, coming with very nicely seasoned guac and dehydrated banana chips. Great way to start the meal. Large portion. -Two different types of vegan quiche that were both decadent, rich and well-spiced. Great creamy texture and quite filling -Black risotto - one of the best risottos I've ever had. Very creamy, with lots of vegan mozzarella, mushrooms, pumpkin seeds, and plenty of microgreens on top. Absolutely divine. -Baião de dois (vegan). I hadn't tried one of these before, and man was it incredible. The main dish was a rice-based dish with vegan sausage, firm tofu, and veggies with a very complex flavour and wonderful textures. On the side was an incredible garlic-sauteed kale, fried banana, and a sort of polenta-like mash with hearts of palm/jackfruit(? - look up) that was sensational. Our server spoke no English, so we communicated via Google Translate. He was so kind, hospitable and friendly--told us he loved serving us at the end. Can't say enough good things about this place. You must try out Banana Verde.

Honestly, this place would be 5 stars if it wasn't for the SERVICE. I absolutely hate to identify…read morepeople but the older bald man who was our server was so nonchalant and absolutely rude. Not like outwardly aggressive type of rude but the kind of rude where he interacts like he couldn't give a damn about the table, the order, or his guests. I do not speak Portuguese but I try. I try so hard to speak Portuguese to a basic level, enough to order. He wouldn't even try to help me out. I know he didn't speak English (not his problem at all) but usually, I even asked for "agua" and he acted as if he couldn't understand me. I resorted to just pointing to items on the menu (which is fine as well) but then he acted like he could barely lean over to see/read which item I was pointing to or like having to come closer to read what I was pointing at was annoying for him. Honestly, we were so excited to come there and he just lets the air out of the room with his demeanor. One thing that wasn't his fault, the restaurant did not have NUMEROUS items that was on the menu. We ordered various items and multiple people had to select their second and third choices. Sounds small but again, when you don't speak the language (but trying your best), having to pick two and three times on the fly is not a nice experience. The most common types of restaurants are Brazilian, Italian and Japanese. Besides these 3 major cuisines you really need to walk far and wide to find some differing flavors especially if you want to find dishes from South Asia. So my girlfriend and I were very happy to recently find a new Indian restaurant just 1.5 blocks from our apartment in Vila Mariana. The restaurant is called Bawarchi and it is located on the 2nd floor of a house with no major signage directing people inside. To put it very simply, it really is just a house that serves up very nice Indian dishes. The menu is surprisingly extensive with a variety of appetizers, a half dozen different types of naan, dozens of curry dishes as well as other Indian favorites. The owner/chef is Indian and has been in Brazil for 13 years. My girlfriend and I have eaten here 2 times in the last week and we are hooked. All of the dishes are colorful and have so much flavor. The prices of the dishes are also very reasonable. Both times we split an appetizer, a couple naan, curry and rice and some beers and the total came out to R$ 70. It is one of the best deals in town and easily one of the most flavorful.
