They had 2 sailmakers working on our main and jib to get us back in shape! They were able to order the exact Sunbrella we wanted and had it in 2 days. They did excellent work, had a quick turn around and were super helpful in getting us back sailing!

One of New Westminster's only signed and marked bike routes, this pleasant path along…read moretraffic-calmed 7th Avenue takes riders from the 22nd Street SkyTrain Station to Hume Park on the Coquitlam border. Bike buttons help in crossing the major intersections, and although there are a few ups and downs (New West is all built on a big slope, after all), it's a fairly easy ride. Not to mention that you skip all the traffic that so often clogs the major routes of New West. Along the way, you get a really good sense of the neighbourhoods of the Royal City from the monster house/bungalow mixture of the West End, to the heritage houses of Queens Park, and the changing face of Sapperton. At several points along the route, there are also nice views of the Fraser. Although there isn't a lot of commerce (i.e. food) along the route itself, it crosses the commercial districts where you could stop off and refuel. Plenty of parks en route as well. At 22nd Street, the path hooks up with the BC Parkway (for Edmonds/Metrotown/Vancouver), or you can cross the Queensborough Bridge or head down along Marine Drive for lots of big-box shopping fun.

An 8k around Stanley Park!…read more For those who want an alternative to the Vancouver Sun Run, the Modo Spring Run-Off 8K is great way to start running at the start of spring! It's 2k shorter than the Sun Run, but the course is truly scenic as it's situated at Stanley Park. Who doesn't like running around a park with an ocean view? I was impressed by the organization of this event! First, I like the start time of 10:00am which means for those who live far away from Stanley Park could get some extra sleep. The start and finish line is situated at the exact same location, there was plenty of food available for runners before and after the run: Powerbars, bananas, chocolate chip cookies, yogurt and mini bagels. Stanley Park Pavilion provides a covered shelter for those who don't want to be outside. Inside the Pavilion, there were different vendors showing off their products and services. It was my first time doing the Spring Run-Off 8k and the temperature was a little cold and I should have probably worn a long sleeve shirt as the breeze from the ocean gave me some chills. Although the seawall was opened for the public, there were fewer than 1100 runners, so the course didn't feel too crowded. The non-running public who used the seawall was respectful and they didn't slow the runners down as they used their common sense to use the upper section of the seawall. Just a note: the t-shirt included was one size too large. The medium had a fit of a large and I only found out when I got home. The run included a nice finishing medal which isn't bad at all for an 8k event!

Blisters on the soles of my fee,t from a big long walk to save the farm at UBC, I saw the Pendulum…read more I was never a student at UBC, so every time I discover something cool (that we didn't have at SFU)- I can't help but get giddy. I was led to the feature board and ordered the eggplant and feta quesadilla - only to be told they had literally just sold out! Oh bugger! But with other yummy sounding quesadilla on the menu - I knew I would be just fine. And I was right. The three cheese is very cheesy indeed. Good value for the size and cheesiness of it all. I sat myself down outside and waited for them to call my name over the PA. (which, I'm not going to lie - was a little weird) I felt like I should have been hanging out at bingo hall or, at least, there should have been some music in the in between calling of names. If I make it that way again, I'm saddling up with a beer too :) I saw some Shaftbury in the fridge, but I was forced to refrain.

The Pit Pub and the Pendulum Cafe ... oh, I get it! Gee, that only took ten years…read more Seriously, when I was a UBC student, the Pendulum was my favourite place to eat. I went back yesterday while visiting campus, and it's still just as good, and busy as ever. Hungry from all that walking around (UBC is a big place), I ordered a roast turkey-pesto quesadilla ($7.25). I wondered if it would be enough food, but when the order came up, I was floored at the serving size. Three big slabs of melted cheese and meat goodness, accompanied by generous dollops of salsa and sour cream. MMM. I really wished for some cutlery that was up to the job, instead of the wimpy plastic jobbies I was forced to make do with because it was near the end of the lunch rush. The Pendulum will be shutting down in January so that construction of the new Student Union Building can start, but I'm sure the Pendulum will be back, bigger and better. PS if there's any constant at UBC, it's construction!

On November 11, 1914, the Park Board officially named this park in honour of Earl Granville, Britain's Colonial Secretary in 1886 when Vancouver was incorporated as a city. Originally the official name for the settlement was "Granville", not Vancouver. That had changed by 1886 and in 1913 the Ward 6 Ratepayers Association suggested honouring Earl Granville with a park naming.
