Please bear in mind, before you criticize too severely, that every single rescue is overcrowded and probably underfunded. Precious Paws even has cats in their bathroom because they are bursting at the seams with unwanted pets. No wonder Julie is snappish about people going to breeders. I would be, too. These cats are medicated, fed and sheltered on a pathetically small budget, and the unwanted dogs are sheltered by people who are kind enough to take them in. Be kind. And donate. And adopt. And ask what you can do rather than being critical.

I witnessed a violent dog fight at the Erie Humane Society dog park due to staff negligence -- two…read morelarge dogs were left unsupervised and began mauling each other. Despite my screams for help, no staff responded for nearly 10 minutes. I had to intervene myself and call the police. Staff were dismissive and unprofessional, more upset about my language than the attack. When asked what the problem was, I told them "(the worker) put two dogs in then same outdoor pen and even though they were f****** fighting she left them alone anyway". Which is exactly what happened. The dogs started to fight, the girl yelled at them to stop, and kicked her leg in between them, and then went back inside. It was all completely preventable. An f-bomb after screaming for help for 10-15 minutes is completely warranted. Their behavior was disrespectful to the animals they were supposed to protect. The staffer said "It was too early on a Saturday morning for language like that", "does my mother know I talk like this", that I was "a real piece of work", etc. They literally wanted to gaslight me because I said the f-word rather than address any concerns. One lady who said she was in charge said "they're just shelter dogs, they get triggered easily". If they're so easily triggered why were they left alone while one dog screamed for almost the whole fight? Now on social media they're saying they tried to talk to me but " i wasn't ready to be respectful". Maybe it's because for over 10 minutes I banged on the fence and ran around the outside of the private pen spraying the dogs with a hose screaming at the top of my lungs because NO ONE ELSE was doing anything. To the point I called the cops AND eventually the Dept of Agriculture who oversees kennel licenses. The Dept of Agricultural called me back within 12 hours and then was on site in 24-48 hours. I filed a formal complaint, and the Department of Agriculture conducted an inspection and you can see in my screenshot they it ====required remedial actions===. That says it all. They apparently watch their dogs as closely as they watched their bank account when the director embezzled.

I applied for adoption for our kitty (Beanie), and within 24 hours I heard from Sean via phone. On our call he asked some important questions and went over Beanie's preferences and health/vaccination background, as well as suggestions for what to buy for her. The next day, after they'd run our background checks, we got another call inviting us to meet Beanie at the home where she was being fostered. Needless to say we fell in love with her and adopted her right on the spot - it was so quick and easy, and I could tell how deeply the SFCR staff and foster home cared for her and her health. Once we brought her home she was social and friendly and perfectly healthy, and Sean followed up to check on her later in the days following her adoption. It's so clear from working with SFCR that they have such a deep love of cats and they take adoption very seriously. If you're looking to adopt in the Pittsburgh area, I cannot recommend them more highly! Our first experience with the Chautauqua Humane Society was in 2017. We had recently lost our…read morebeloved dog of 17 years and knew we wanted and needed another dog. The staff was welcoming, supportive and understanding of our grief. They allowed us to view the adoptable dogs privately, there was no pressure. We saw a lot of options, but none seemed to fit our wish list of a puppy, female and German Shepherd mix. As we were leaving a staff member suggested we take one more walk with her. She pointed out a few dogs that might be a good fit but for one reason or another we said "No". When we reached the end of the hall, we stopped in front of a glass enclosed room. Three older dogs were playing, one stopped and locked eyes with my husband. The staff member said Snowball was 10 years old, a staff favorite and very shy around men. He had been abused by a man, so he tended to trust and make friends slowly. She asked if we would like to meet him. We agreed to meet him and were taken to an outdoor patio area. They brought Snowball in and he walked around the area and then climbed into my lap and started licking me. When I was thoroughly loved; he climbed in my husband's lap and proceeded to lick him. We knew we had found our forever dog. The adoption process was efficient, professional and personal. We were sent home with food, toys, a collar, leash, coupons and a dog that was a perfect fit for our family. We can't thank the people at Chautauqua Humane Society enough; their compassion and patience helped us find the perfect dog. Snowball is loved and has found his forever home. Our second interaction with the Chautauqua Humane Society was in 2019-2020. In 2019 we noticed 3 feral cats on our property. The cats were young, so we fed them. We soon realized we had the start of a feral colony. 3 female cats soon became 3 cats and 10 kittens. We reached out to the Humane Society for advice and help. They suggested we try to socialize the kittens for future adoption and get on the list for the spay and neuter clinic. This was a very stressful time for us, we felt a responsible for the cats and helpless at the same time. The staff called to check on us, they offered support, invited us to meetings on the feral cat problem in this area and always made us feel like we were not alone. Trapping feral cats is not easy and there were times we felt like we would never succeed. The staff always encouraged us and showed genuine happiness when we "got another one". Our colony is no longer growing, every cat has been spayed and neutered. We can't say enough about the staff, they are friendly, compassionate, knowledgeable and caring. We recommend them highly for pet adoptions, feral cat problems and animal advice. You won't find a more professional and caring group of individuals.

DDB is not really a dog rescue group in the conventional meaning of the word although they…read morecertainly do rescue dogs, foster dogs and find homes for them. But they have taken on a much bigger task..changing laws to protect chained dogs. To my way of thinking, Tamira Thayne and her nation wide group of volunteers are more like...animal suffragettes. Arrests and all. Growing up in what Tami likes to refer to as "Pennsyltucky" she was dismayed by the accepted practice she observed of dog owners leaving their animals virtually abandoned at the end of a chain, year in and year out, through hot summers and freezing winters, without sufficient food, water or shelter, treating them not as pets, but ersatz burglar alarms..maybe because the people who did this had seen their parents keep dogs this way, and their parents parents did..and the neglect of dogs in this manner was just endemic to much of the country. Tami made the decision to help these dogs. She started out very unofficially, talking to dog owners who really did not care for their dogs, ya know now that burglar alarms are available pretty cheap..and for those who would not give up their dogs, she brought dog houses and straw to insulate them, and food and water, and she documented everything on video. She was becoming known as a dog advocate. A fateful day came when Tami heard from a woman whose neighbors had gone away and left a dog chained up to die, with no food or water for 3 days, because the dog was old and apparently didn't deserve anything like humane euthanasia..this is not as isolated an incident as one might want to believe. The lady was listening to the poor dog cry for much of this time..but couldn't do anything because of trespassing laws. The Humane Society has been called with no results..Tami was a last hope. Well, Tami went in there with a friend, a bolt cutter and a video camera and she rescued the dying dog, who they renamed Doogie. She broke the law to save this poor dog from suffering further, and when the sheriff came by to retrieve the "property" she'd "stolen" she refused to return Doogie (who was by then resting comfortably at a vet's office) to the owners who'd abandoned him to a slow, painful death. Doogie lived another 10 months, happier than he'd ever been and thriving on love, food and shelter. For her efforts, Tami was prosecuted and convicted of theft, but strangely, Doogie's owners were never charged with animal cruelty. Well, Tami was just not having it, and neither were the people who, through myspace and other internet sites, were learning of this travesty of justice. Thus, Dogs Deserve Better became a national phenomena, and it has become a group on the forefront of changing nationwide chain laws, educating people and raising funds for dogs who, truly deserve better. DDB doesn't just fight to change dog chaining laws, they also lobby for harsher penalties against animal abusers. And their work is making a difference. Tami is a hero of mine. To paraphrase a sage quoth, she and her volunteers really are the people their dogs thinks they are. I urge all people who love animals to become a contributing member of Dogs Deserve Better. **Currently, 3 states in the U.S have dog chaining laws; California, Nevada and Texas. 11 States are considering bills, and the greater majority of the country has no laws and are not considering them. The fundamental law DDB is trying to pass is a nationwide ban against chaining dogs for life. Life. Imagine being left on a 12 foot chain for your entire lifetime.
