two women standing in front of a fireplace

I went to Velvet for the after party for Friendly Fires & The XX. It's a nice place, but kind of small. It's just one long room, with two bars at each end. It has a cool fireplace in the middle, located next to the dance floor and some small couches lining the back walls. The music was great and the drinks were strong. The crowd that usually goes is more of the hipster and young urban variety. I think there might be some type of dress code, there definitely is a line in front that you have to pass through with the bouncers approval. As at any place, be kind to the bouncers and they will be good to you. They definitely have a big influence on who gets in or who doesn't. I've watched pretty girls being carried out kicking + screaming for pissing off the door guy. On the other hand, I think they're super nice, and will definitely hook you up if they like you. A good place to go if you want to drink with young and attractive hipsters that dress well, a bad place to go if you're not one of the above.

Womens bathroom. It smelled as bad as it looks.

Apparently, the basement is where it's all "happening". Once we finally got down there it was hard to tell why anyone would want to be there; it's humid and doesn't have proper ventilation, the DJ is no one you've ever heard of (this was a Sat. night) and check out the picture of the bathroom. It's disgusting - actually nauseating. Pretentious; and I live in LA where we practically gave birth to pretention.

Reading some of the negative reviews of this place is honestly hilarious; a whole lot of people who…read moreclearly don't belong at a techno after hours and are entering not knowing why they're there. It's like showing up at a line dancing club and being upset they are playing country music. look, if you're unfamiliar with this culture, if you have never experienced being in the same room with someone on drugs before, if you're not well aware that bylaws prevent the sale of alcohol after 3am, or consider that operating such a venue is going to be costly and some of those costs are going to be handed down to the consumer - then yes, obviously don't go. Save yourself the $50 and the typing you'll have to do on a 1 star review later. This is not a venue where a site like Yelp is going to be of much use to you. If you're going here because you're aware of the reputation of this place for audiophile-quality sound, and enjoy underground dance music culture then you're going to have a good time. If you're only showing up because you're a tourist who is looking at a list of clubs and you see this one has some attention, it's probably best to steer clear. this type of thing isn't for everybody. it's mainly going to be big room techno, a genre that offers limited thrills to many of the uninitiated. if you already know you like this music, you'll be good. Stereo absolutely does live up to the hype in terms of its famous sound system, and it's a thoughtfully laid out club, and a fun, safe (honestly the people who feel unsafe are people unused to after hours dance party culture/seeing otherwise harmless people on drugs etc.) place to dance. However, a place like this is never going to have the romantic DIY underground appeal of a TBA warehouse party, or some european clubs, and as such is a little soulless and pulls a wealthier downtown crowd who are a little soulless themselves. Definitely a feast for the ears but I struggle to imagine having your absolute best dance floor memories at a place like this.

The rules are straightforward: 1. No alcohol 2. No gum 3. No photos or videos (... also the unofficial rule that the right side is the gay side and the left is the straight side by the end of the night. It's not an actual rule, but a cultural thing). Complaints about it being alcohol-free, having gum taken away, or being told to put phones away miss the point entirely. Those are exactly the kinds of behaviors the club is trying to filter out, and it's part of what makes the experience what it is. Don't go expecting a flashy or luxurious venue. There is no VIP area on purpose - everyone in the club is considered equal. The lighting is minimal, and the layout is simple... mostly a large seating area and a big dance floor. You're there for the sound system, which is arguably the best currently functioning club speaker system anywhere on the planet, and for the atmosphere, which is on another level. There's a reason it consistently ranks among the favorite venues of top DJs worldwide.

Very interesting night here....went to see Felix Cartal and Pierce Fulton, so that was going to for…read moresure be a good night filled with great music. Drinks were ok, atmosphere and vibe were awesome. Sound was ridiculous, visuals were very top notch. Only bad thing was at one point a pepper bomb went off on the dance floor and it cleared out the whole club. We all were outside smoking cigarettes and griping, and then they let us all back in to fresh air and the show went on. Overall very fun night

The New Years Eve "Escapade" event at La Mouche was so unbelievably horrible that it defies words,…read morea scam so utterly crooked that it would make Bernie Madoff proud. Four other friends and I purchased the CAD$49.99 VIP ticket, which was supposed to include access to the club's main dance floor from 10 pm-3 am as well as unlimited access to a variety of drinks (including tips for the 20 bartenders). We arrived shortly before 10 to find hundreds of people already lined up in front of two different doors, with staff letting people in at a glacial pace. It eventually turned out that most of the people in our line, including us, were supposed to be in the OTHER line, a fact that no one bothered to tell us until around 30-45 min into the wait. Thus, we spent around a total of 1.5 hrs standing in the freezing cold (completely sober, I might add). When we finally got inside, we were met by complete chaos. Throngs of people were pushing past one another to check their coats, which cost at least $3. Apparently many of them (not unreasonably) thought that this fee was included in the $50. A small annoyance, to be sure, but because of it we only entered the dance floor with less than 10 min to the New Year. At long last, we told ourselves, the wait was over! Now was the time for partying and fun...but it was not to be. Inside the bars were a mob scene, with only around 3-4 bars and half a dozen bartenders. Worst of all, the bartenders completely ignored anyone who didn't flash money. Even bottled water couldn't be had without a two dollar tip...one girl who refused to pay was handed a plastic cup and told to go fill it up in a bathroom. Eventually I whipped out a $5 and somehow procured a round of shots for us after a 20 min wait. I'm not sure if they weren't being paid or were just plain greedy, but in any event we likely would have received better service at a prison mess hall. By 1 am we were so thoroughly let down and exhausted by the awfulness that we simply left and went back to our hotel. I say without a hint of exaggeration that this place ruined our New Years Eve, although fortunately our other nights in Montreal were a blast. I can't speak to how La Mouche is on regular nights, although I would advise any visitors to avoid this place at all costs. I intend to file a complaint with whatever Canadian government agency I can get to listen, because in my mind La Mouche and Keenest Productions perpetuated borderline fraud against 2000 people.
