I've eaten here several times during my visits to Freyung. I opt for the more traditional Bavarian dishes and they never disappoint. Today I had the Schnitzel with wide French fries along with pancake soup and a Weißbier. Sehr gut!! read more

We took a river cruise along the Danube and a 'must stop' is in Passau Germany. In reading through…read moreliterature, about 500,000 people visit this small city that has about 50,000 full time residents. To say the least, this city is overrun with tourism. There are groups walking around everywhere, listening to their tour guides holding up the plastic 'lollypop' of all shapes and colors. Not far from the main square, we found a reasonably quiet street with a wonderful coffee shop and restaurant. Anton has two entrances, but we learned that they serve the same food. We actually came here twice in our day in Passau. We chose to sit inside for coffee and pastry and later, outside for lunch. The coffee and chai tea that we were able to enjoy along with the absolutely most extraordinary apple strudel were excellent. The staff were very helpful, guiding us to select what's best in the bakery. The atmosphere was comfortable. Clearly, nearly everyone here is a tourist, but it didn't have the feel of a tourist trap. We asked around and several people suggested that we return here for lunch. And so we did just that. Sitting outside we had the chance to watch the many tours and tourists walk by. The main downside was that it's legal to smoke outside in the EU, not inside. And there was a group of smokers several tables away. Not terrible, but could be better. For lunch we enjoyed the soup of the day, spinach dumplings and clams in pasta along with a side salad. Everything was very fresh, well seasoned, and truly delicious. As we had dessert and coffee earlier, we elected not to have them again. There are likely several good restaurants in Passau. This is the one we chose and we were very satisfied. One last suggestion, if you are in the city after about 5 PM, all of the tours and most tourists have left. If you choose to walk at this time of the day, you can really enjoy the beauty without the people walking everywhere around you.

We were greeted warmly in German and when the host/waiter detected our American accents, and difficultly speaking German, he immediately transitioned to English. What a pleasant and professional gentleman! He also provided us with English menus. Awesome! The ambiance is amazing. Old world meets new world. This was a great spot to take a quick break before heading back to the boat.

Anyway, this place offers many kinds both sweet and salty and they are delicious. Yep, DELICIOUS. You heared it. And I am not kidding. They don´t have anything else to eat. But they don´t need to. Because local štrůdl rules. I got back 20-25 years into the time when I was a little boy and my grandmother was preparing this traditional czech dessert (ok, its origin is in Austria but let´s not ruin this moment:-) mainly with apples. And local štrůdl is definitely one of the best which I have eaten since that time. Just to complete all info. Service is very good, and interier is kind a normal. Nothing is really special except ŠTRUDL!!! So check it people. It´s definitely worth it.

Cozy, reasonably priced place for very decent Italian food in Cesky Krumlov…read more Comfy seating areas both indoors and outdoors. The outdoor seating area includes a playground for kids too :) Would highly recommend the spaghetti aglio olio e peperoncino if you can take spicy, and the pizza prosciutto di parma. The pasta is hand-made; very tasty and slightly chewy (a bit on the harder side, which I personally like). Excellent prosciutto on the pizza and tasty crust (not too thin, but not too thick either). The mixed salad with cheese and olives and the spaghetti bolognese were solid choices as well. We had a very patient and helpful waiter, service was excellent and we left feeling replenished and satisfied!

I was wandering around the center looking for a coffee place open on a Sunday morning and found cafe retro. Staff was very kind, spoke English, Czech and some German. Interior is very classy but still casual. Very clean, neat and organized- I think couples, single and small groups best for here. Kid ah, maybe if they are well behaved. More a place to be social but people are still working on their laptops because here comes the shocker....they have free wifi!!!! Not many places here do besides hotels so that's a selling point. Their prices are fair for the location, 50 crowns for latte, 35 for espresso and so on. They also have quite a few different brews to choose from-impressive If you're a coffee lover in this small town with not many options. They also have some real food here too so if you get hungry while here don't worry, you don't even have to leave. Think pizza, pasta and steak amount others. All looked delicious. I would recommend this place to anyone in cesky krumlov- great hangout!

You'll find this rather large (but still ultra cozy) cafe next to the Egon Schiele Art Centrum. The museum opens an hour before the art centrum does, but you should know that if you purchase tickets to the art centrum (it's amazing and so worth it) and a coffee over at the cafe, you'll get a free baked treat... which turned out to be what was basically an entire family-sized apple strudel that was made fresh in house. We ordered 4 coffees and had earlier purchased 4 tickets to the museum, so our group basically got 4 pies... that my sugar-loving SO promptly polished off. I had a few bites of my strudel and I can vouch that it was absolutely perfect. As with most food and beverage in the Czech Republic, the prices were pretty much dirt cheap. Like, I don't know why we ever left. For the first time in my life I could walk into a place and afford anything (and in some cases, everything at once) on the menu. For the most part, we had a hard time finding friendly service in CR, but this cafe and one other place also in Český Krumlov were the exception. There was one beautiful older woman working the entire cafe (though we were the only customers at daybreak) and she made the best and most beautiful cappuccino of our entire trip. Again, I don't know why we ever left. The place is decorated with works from independent local and international artists, but remains homey and casual with mis-matched vintage couches and coffee tables. If you walk around this expansive space, you'll notice several additional larger rooms, including what may be a children's play room (mind you, I only saw one single child the entire 3 days we spent roaming Český Krumlov) equipped with fun toys, a grand piano and several nude paintings... in true Egon 'statutory' Schiele fashion. You should also know that there's an annexed special exhibit gallery that you can enter only from the cafe that features some odes to Egon and other interesting works from up-and-coming artists. This cafe (alom with the art centrum and the city of Český Krumlov itself) is an absolute must.
