I'm writing this after a lot of thought. My intention is not to attack anyone, but to share our experience honestly so other pet parents can be informed. Our dog, Noni, was brought to VEG ER for Pets - Costa Mesa (2800 Harbor Blvd, Costa Mesa, CA) on February 1, 2026, after being diagnosed elsewhere with a severe urinary tract infection. When she arrived, she was still walking into the clinic on her own. Before a full evaluation was completed, she was given an initial injection of 10 mg of methadone (10 mg/mL injectable). According to the invoice, she ultimately received a total of 22.55 mg of methadone, with additional doses given within a short period of time. This effectively stacked the medication. After the first dose, she was never the same. She became extremely sedated, weak, and disoriented and never returned to her previous condition. During her stay, she was also given alfaxalone (190.2 mg) for sedation while attempting to place a catheter. Multiple attempts were unsuccessful. She woke up screaming on the table in obvious distress, which was heartbreaking to witness. Despite this, she continued to urinate on her own, showing her kidneys were still functioning. We were told her sodium levels were dangerously high, and over time they were brought down. To us, this felt like progress. However, these improvements never seemed to be viewed as wins, and from very early on, euthanasia was frequently presented as an option. Over the course of her hospitalization, we spent over $15,451.15, including medications, diagnostics, fluids, oxygen, and hospitalization (screenshots attached). We trusted every recommendation because we loved her and would have done anything for her. On our final day, while reviewing our invoice at the front desk, I overheard another client approach the doctor and say she was scared because her dog was overly sedated and asked that future doses be reduced to a quarter of what had been given. This deeply concerned me and reinforced the questions we already had. At one point, I asked whether Narcan might help reverse the effects of the pain medication, and staff acknowledged that it could potentially help. To my knowledge, it was never administered. Based on everything I have learned since, it feels as though much of her care became focused on trying to reverse the effects of a long-lasting overdose rather than addressing her original condition. We were left with many unanswered questions and very little closure. I respect how difficult veterinary medicine is, and I know mistakes are never intentional. However, I wish there had been more transparency, caution with medication dosing, and communication during one of the hardest times of my life. Noni walked into this clinic. She never walked out. She was family. She deserved the best care possible. We brought her home for a few hours and she was rushed back to another facility who said her heart rate was dropping and we had to put her down! Thank you Nurse Christine for your HOPE and empathy. Nalah aka Noni was only 6!

You're all so amazing! We brought my rabbit to you because he wasn't feeling well, and you sprang into action right away! You were incredibly quick, and sadly, he had to be put down. We cremated him, and you're so kind--we received a note with his paw prints and hair. This was truly kind of you, and we're so grateful. Thank you so much.

Professional staff is very attentive. Open even on holidays with affordable care. The ER is meticulously clean. What sets their ER apart from others is that the lobby is very open and chairs are comfortable. In addition to this, you can visibly see your pet being cared for in front of you which helps calm your nerves. The wait is very short, and the staff is very respectful. I would definitely return for my cats and other animals if an emergency arises and care is required.

The best experience at VEG ER. Unfortunately, I discovered this ER under stressful circumstances, but I'm so grateful I found them. What started as a normal day turned into one of the scariest moments. During our morning walk, something bit my baby, Reina. Within seconds, her breathing slowed, she went limp, had explosive diarrhea, and became unresponsive. My husband and I panicked and rushed her to the car. As he drove, I frantically searched for an emergency vet, and thank God, VEG was only four minutes from our home. I called ahead, and they were already prepared for Reina when we arrived. The team acted quickly with incredible focus, care, and compassion. My husband and I were both in shock, but he said this was one of the best veterinary experiences he has had in years. They treated Reina as if she were their own, quickly identifying what was wrong and keeping us informed every step of the way. They offered us coffee and a private room to stay with Reina while she was being treated. Dr. Zarday personally called later that day to check in on her, something that meant so much to us. Every vet tech we encountered was kind, attentive, and genuinely caring, constantly checking on Reina throughout her stay. Thanks to their prompt action and the right medications, she began improving almost immediately under their care. We are so thankful for everyone at VEG ER. Truly an amazing experience and we cannot thank you enough!

They kept her warm and comfortable in an incubator, and we were right in a room with her.

Excellent experience, even though it was a sad one. Took our sick bunny in and after amazing efforts, she passed away. I was so impressed by the entire staff, especially the doctor, who was honest, but so incredibly kind. I never once felt like I was being asked to do unnecessary, costly tests. The options and recommendations were realistic and done in small steps. They prioritized her comfort while determining her condition. They were also very sympathetic to our feelings. I would absolutely go here first for any emergency services for animals.

Grand Opening today at the VEG for Pets in Costa Mesa on Harbor. No wait and we are so so glad we called. We were going to visit the Pet Hospital in Huntington BCH but the wait would have been 3hrs. This place is beautiful, clean, and the staff is super friendly. Interesting open floor concept. So glad this place opened right in time for our Maui!

I can't say enough wonderful things about this veterinary team. They were compassionate, gentle, and incredibly skilled when caring for my cat, Mr. Cute, during his emergency visit. During one of the hardest nights of my life they treated us both with such respect and kindness. You can tell that everyone in the office, and I mean everyone, has a huge heart and truly loves taking care of animals. We were surrounded by care every step of the way. So if you are looking for a place that treats you and your pet like family, this is the place! I will always be grateful for the compassion and professionalism they showed us. I would trust them with any animal, every time. From the bottom of my heart, thank you Dr. Nikki, Danielle, Alex and Zoe. I will never forget everything you did for us!

We drove 1.5 hours one way in the early morning and received a call around 11:30 AM saying the radiation machine software had stopped working. My husband and I were extremely worried and disappointed. Thankfully the machine was fixed around 3 PM, and our fur baby was still able to receive his first radiation treatment and go home around 4:30 PM. After that, Day 2 and Day 3 went smoothly, and everything went very well. What truly impressed us was Dr. Wakamatsu, herself. Her consultation was incredibly thorough and informative. She explained the CT scan in great detail and made sure we understood everything about our dog's condition and the treatment plan and the treatment options. We had also consulted another oncologist in Tustin, who said we would need to wait at least 72 hours before starting treatment after their CT scan. Dr. Wakamatsu was able to start immediately, which meant so much to us during such a stressful time. Our baby CobyBean is now in the post-radiation phase, and we are hoping for the best. Thank you Dr. Wakamatsu and the radiation team, it is very sweet about the certificate (a very sweet diploma) that they gave us on the last day of treatment. I truly wouldn't mind to drive 1.5 hours or more to see Dr. Wakamatsu again. She is an amazing radiation oncologist, highly recommended to anyone who needs her help. Your fur baby will be in great hands. Highly recommended.

Unexpectedly a massive gastrointestinal GIST tumor was found on him that we had no idea about. Due to the very tricky location, we talked to several surgeons before meeting Dr Vinayak, all of those others who suggested a very risky procedure of Billroth 1 and/or Billroth 2. Those essentially would have fully removed the tumor, but in doing so would have very likely caused a lot of long term and chronic issues with nutrition, gastric system and overall health. It felt like we were picking between two very difficult, potentially fatal options- an aggressive Billroth procedure or doing nothing. No one else had any other possibilities for us. Then we met Dr. Vinayak. She walked us through her past experience and success with a partial resection of the tumor- removing enough to avoid risk of rupture or obstructing internal organs due to the size, but not going for full margins or complete removal. Given this was a less aggressive tumor and our dog was asymptomatic, this seemed like a much more feasible path. We decided to love forward with the procedure. The whole surgical oncology team was phenomenal to work with. Easy to get ahold of, and always answered all my questions. Dr. Vinayak explained everything very thoroughly, made it easy to understand, and we never felt rushed or pushed into a decision. Her associate Dr Hart was equally as helpful, communicative and so great to work with. The surgery was a great success- Dr Vinayak was successful in exactly what our goal was for this procedure and the outcome was great. After a few nights in the hospital we got to take our dog home, and though he will be on a journey with chemo, thanks to Dr Vinayak and her entire surgical oncology team, we're now looking at years with our dog- not months. The gift she had given us goes beyond words. But at the very least I can share this experience with anyone who has a dog in a difficult situation needing oncological surgery, I cannot reconned Dr Vinayak and her team highly enough.

After hours of tests and waiting, around 2:00 a.m. I was told she needed emergency gallbladder surgery and that survival was "50/50." I understand emergencies are urgent, but I did not feel I received honest, objective guidance about what those odds realistically meant for a senior dog, likely outcomes, or quality of life. I felt heavy pressure to move forward. The pricing was shocking, quoted between $9,500 and $7,500, and the way it was presented felt like a sales push. When I asked questions about the quote, I was handed a credit application and told to apply online from my phone while my dog was laying on the table in front of me whimpering. When I tried to ask why it cost so much, the doctor would walk out and say, "I don't talk money," even though I wasn't trying to negotiate, I was trying to understand the procedure, the risks, and what I was being asked to consent to. I was also being asked to sign disclaimers by front office staff who could not answer my questions, and the responses I got felt scripted and unrelated to what I was asking. I was told I couldn't wait there. After I left, they called me back saying her heart rate had dropped. I said I did not think they should go forward with surgery, but I was told they were proceeding anyway. Shortly after, I heard monitor alarms, and I went to wait in my car. No one explained what was happening, and about an hour later I was told my dog had died. The surgeon never spoke to me. Go elsewhere. If you need overnight emergency care, choose a different hospital. I thought this was the only overnight emergency option nearby, but I later found out there are other choices. She had already gone to her doctor earlier that day and was treated, and we thought she might be ok for the night at home; however, once the pain meds wore off, she was definitely not feeling well. We took her to the Fountain Valley Emergency Pet Hospital, and she was treated wonderfully. I've had previous poor experiences with other emergency rooms, but this one was different. From the moment we walked in, she had her vitals taken quickly. We then waited (not long) for her to see a doctor, and the doctor came in to give us an idea of what needed to be done. We left her there for further testing, fluids, and pain control. We were contacted, and the results were reviewed over the phone (I was sent links for radiology and labs) to go over them with the doctor. The plan of care was thoroughly explained, and she felt better the next morning. I even received updates and a photo from that evening. We picked her up and were sent home with medical records and everything she needed to continue care with her regular primary vet. Everything was also sent directly to her regular primary care vet. Everyone was pleasant and truly seemed to care about the circumstances. Dr You was great with her and very good at going over the results. Honey was treated like family. She left in the morning and was on the road to recovery along with her primary vet, whom we took her to that day. Lo and behold, the following week, Honey was outside using the backyard restroom when a coyote attacked her. Our black lab rescued her, and I am so thankful nothing worse happened. Be careful, it's Coyote season! I knew when that happened she had a laceration to her face and it would need to be repaired, it was after hours so there we went back to Fountain Valley Emergency Pet Hospital. We were seen relatively quickly; they had a busy night, and the doctor was in surgery when we arrived. Honey was stable, so we waited until she could be seen. Dr. Hoogeveen saw Honey and she was great, she came to speak to us and explain what Honey would need and the best course of treatment for her. Honey had to undergo general anesthesia, which we were extremely concerned about, given her age and the fact that she was still recovering from a very rough bout of pancreatitis. Dr. Hoogeveen walked us through it, answered all of our questions, and provided direction for her care. Honey stayed the night again, once Dr. Hoogeveen was done with the surgery she contacted us to let us know how everything went. We were able to pick up Honey in the morning, and she looked well. Honey recovered well,l and they took good care of her. Honey is now recovering at home after a very stressful two week,s and I am grateful that we had a place to go to for her care when her regular Vet was closed. As far as cleanliness, it's very clean. The staff are all wonderful. They offer different payment options, such as CareCredit and Cherry. I don't know if they offer others, but we were able to qualify for Cherry, which was a considerable relief after an expensive two weeks! Honey is now recovering at home. The only wish I have is that they would be open a bit later during the weekdays. Not every regular vet is open early for transfer. Hopefully, in the future, that can be an option. I wouldn't hesitate to take your pet here if you need emergent care. I appreciate that they treated Honey like family. Hopefully, we won't be back anytime soon, but I still recommend them if you need to!

She's on top of everything, makes sure that the line of communication is always open, and goes above and beyond if there's ever any type of snafu that comes up. The entire staff (all of the vets, vet techs, front desk, etc) you can tell is very engaged with what's going on with you and your pet. I'm so thankful that I found them because they have taken such great care of my dog at a level that I know he would not have gotten anywhere else. I promise you will not regret coming here.

I had a much better experience here than at many of the veterinary facilities I've visited…read morerecently. While they aren't the closest option for me(which could make things difficult in an emergency), the level of care and professionalism I experienced today truly stood out. I especially appreciated the cardiologist and the vet techs. After my cat's heart ultrasound, they immediately brought her back to me instead of making me wait while payment was processed. That small gesture spoke volumes. It made me feel trusted and respected as a client, rather than treated like a transaction. What also stood out was the way they handled my cat with patience and care. Unlike some other hospitals I've encountered, no one came into the room claiming they couldn't manage her tiny 8-pound self or suggesting they needed to turn her away. The staff treated her compassionately and professionally from start to finish. Overall, it was genuinely a positive experience, and I wish more veterinary hospitals would adopt similar practices. I strongly recommend Dr. Sara Miller, she has an incredible bedside manner and made a stressful situation feel much easier to navigate.

I called over a week ago, and my wife called three days in a row trying to get someone to call back -- and nothing. We left messages each time, and when we try to talk to someone, we're told only one person handles scheduling for the department we need. Well, my dog is dying, and the vet said to come back in a week -- but it's now been longer thanks to this scheduler who can't manage to return calls. To bad, because we like the hospital otherwise.

From the moment we walked in, the team (Brandon especially) stood out. Brandon was incredibly kind, patient, and communicative, which made a huge difference for us as anxious parents. He loves labs too and mocha loves being loved! Toni, Julie, Serena and Marcela were amazing with mocha too and really helped calm some of her stress too Dr Sohn took the time to thoroughly talk with us, gather Mocha's history, and understand everything that was going on. We never felt rushed or brushed off, they made sure we were fully informed and prepared for each step. Most importantly, they helped keep us calm during an overwhelming situation. They didn't try to oversell unnecessary tests, but they also made sure to run a comprehensive set of diagnostics so that no possibilities were overlooked. It felt like they genuinely cared about doing what was best for Mocha, not just checking boxes. Overall, we felt supported, heard, and confident in the care Mocha received. We're very grateful to the team and would definitely recommend them!

That leads to me believe that it's not even actually him responding to people on Yelp. A manager of the hospital called and said they were the best person to help me, and I insisted that I speak to Mr. Cao. They continued on that they are the managers and the best people to help me, but I insisted that I talked to someone that is actually a doctor and not administrative. it has been more than three days. We got an analysis of the fluid in his abdomen that built up, which was more than a pint and a half and this hospital allowed it to remain and didn't even take a sample like they promised to do. The analysis showed that his body is fighting some sort of infection and his blood cells rapidly increased. Not only could they have removed the fluid, but they could have given him an antibiotic. They failed to give our antibiotic to our French bulldog as well when he had an infection. In my opinion, it is cruelty to a dog to do what they did and just take my money and allow him to suffer. He is anemic and fighting an infection and basically fighting for his life. Now they won't even respond to me. There are a few good doctors here that do the right thing. But has a hole, two out of our four visits in the last year. These guys have not done what was right for our dogs and left two dogs in pain leaving their hospital without proper care.

After just one week, we came in for a training session and already noticed a significant improvement. We then went away for two more weeks, and every single day we received photos, videos, and detailed updates. The communication was exceptional! You can really feel the heart, love, and care they pour into every dog, and that makes all the difference. A special thank you to Casandra and AJ, who are incredible trainers so kind, thoughtful, and genuinely gifted at what they do. They gave our dog the most impactful framework and boundaries, and it's clear they pour their hearts into every animal in their care. That level of dedication is exactly what you want when deciding where to send your dog. We look forward to daycare, continued training, and group dog walks. I'm so glad I scheduled the training session and will continue to schedule training session with her! Her training techniques are soo effective.
