I would always meet friends here, and we would check out books and shows together. The building, really is what Washburn is. Brownstone! That doesn't sound like much, but much of Washburn, in the olden days, was all about brownstone. The building is really pretty and has been there forever. I grew up going to big public libraries in big cities, so I'm kind of a brat when it comes to…read morelibrary systems. But I really can't say enough nice things about the Duluth library. First, it's accessible -- right downtown with parking all around the building and right on the bus line. Second -- the staff is SO nice. We visit Duluth often but don't live there, and the staff is to a person helpful and considerate. I was working on research project and made several calls to the library for guidance and help in the week or so before I came to visit in person. Each person I spoke with was super helpful and one librarian even called me back because she thought of an additional thing that might help. Then I made my in-person visit to finish my research and use some of the tools you can only use at the library itself. Again, everyone was incredibly friendly and helpful. They helped me locate the microfilm I needed, reminded me how to work the machine and even came back to check on me after awhile. I was also quite impressed with the number of online resources available for use even without visiting the library. There are a number of very helpful databases available on the library website. I can't say much about the book selection since that's not why I was there. But I did note that there's an exchange where the library can get books from other branches, which is always nice.

We we're able to reserve a small room for a couple hours to get some calls done too! Very nice, fairly modern, well lit library filled with, you guessed it.. Books! It's a lovely facility and we're so great ful to have this resource in town. Will be back again.

In June, this is a beautiful park. In the winter, probably not so much. The library is wood with a wood roof. it's looking quite aged, likely from the wonderful Wisconsin and Lake Superior weather. It has a single shelf and was quite full with half paperbacks and half hardcovers, many of which looked like former library books. A good selection but nothing I wanted to take with me today. We were a bit bored on Madeline Island and decided to check out the library. Outside was charming…read morelike a historic schoolhouse, but the inside felt like grandma's basement in the 1980's with outdated and mismatched furniture. I loved the Gazebo in the back garden. Great location for fun photo ops, but inside is in dire need of a glow up. However, i enjoyed the cool AC and strong/free WiFi.
