Came here for their Saturday night show and had an absolute blast! The performances were full of awesome energy, with a great mix of comedy, artistry, and sexyness. All of the performers and crew were super nice and very approachable for photos after/kept a really great audience/performer vibe going the whole time. Perfect for a girls night out, bachelorette, or just a fun weekend thing to do! I registered the bachelorette party I was a part of beforehand and we were able to get VIP seating and a shoutout during the performance. They go the extra mile to make sure you are comfortable and have a great time. I really appreciated that the company was so inclusive of all gender identities, body types, and races. After attending a student showcase one of our friends was in, my maid of honor organized a private class for my bachelorette party here! It was a blast! We went to their studio Saturday afternoon around 12:30 and brought in mimosas before we began at 1pm. The class was about an hour and a half from what I can remember. We opted to learn a mini routine for fun. Our group had about 8 girls in total. Red hot Annie led the class, she was full of energy, positive, kept a great pace, and did an excellent job explaining the various dance moves. We would learn portions of the dance and then practice the whole thing to music. We really liked the song selected and the routine! It was prefect for a bachelorette party. Overall it was a fun unique activity to do to get everyone out of their comfort zones. A few girls were worried about feeling uncomfortable but everyone was able to quickly get really into it and feel open to fully embrace it! It was a great activity to start the day and get everyone talking! I would highly recommend for bachelorette parties!!! I'm definitely going to look into taking workshops since I'm tight on time right now but I'd also look into taking classes with Red Hot Annie again! read more

JEEZY'S JUKE JOINT, AN AFRICAN-AMERICAN BURLESQUE SHOW. Loved Jeezy's Juke Joint, an all African-American Burlesque Show!. So much fun, not to mention somewhat educational. :) I enjoyed the MC, Jeez Loueez'. Got a kick out of her crazy humor and her ability to roll with the punches. The eclectic styles of burlesque that the ladies performed were very entertaining and some were more unique than others. I had never seen an all African-American cast of performers of burlesque and this was a real treat. I liked some more than others, but they all did their "thang" and did it in a way that made me feel they loved their craft. Can't be shy here. This is a very sexy show. I loved the campiness of some of the performers and it quite cool seeing slender and "healthier" ladies perform. There was something for everyone. MC Monty and his dancers did a dance number to his rap. Holliwood Monroe can really blow. She has a great set of pipes. Loved her voice. There was a male and a female drag performer, Shea Coulee and Switch the boi wonder. I've been around the block, but I was still enlightened. Among my personal favorites were Coco DuPree's interpretation of Isaac Hayes' song, "Do Your Thing". Her hot 1970's "Foxy Brown/Pam Grieresque" costume, complete with black faux fur jacket and train covering her red with black zebra stripe hotpants ensemble, topped off with a big red fan pick in her "fro" was so "right on" point. Reminiscent of Angela Davis. That girl knows she CAN move! Make no mistake, she did her thang. The girl was "baaaad" and her moves were tight. Praline DuPree's 1950's poodlelicious outfit and spirited dance routine were big fun. She was classy, spunky and coquettish all rolled into one. She had great charisma with a lovely hint of southern Louisiana charm. Horchata Dentata is one strong, tall woman who had some intense control on "the pole". She made it look easy. I expected to see a more petite woman, but I was so impressed with her strength and confidence. I ain't mad at her, no sireee. Foxy LaFeelion did a wonderful 1920's style dance and her costume was beautiful with its many layers. Marz Timms, the comic, was very funny. He cracked me up. I enjoyed Star Dixon's incredible tap dancing and the talent of "Shea Coulee", the rather rhythmic and stylish female impersonator. He definitely worked it for us. All in all, there were about 17 performers and they were all marvelous. They came in all shapes and sizes, which was refreshing to see. It was plain to see that everyone in the theater was having a good ol' time and tappin' their feet. Lots of whoopin' and hollerin' was goin' on. After seeing this show, I wanted to run out and buy some pasties and a red "Wonder" bra. read more

I just completed the Burlesque 1-2 class with Red Hot Annie. I had read the Yelp reviews and heard from friends how great this experience would be - but to have those expectations exceeded during my time in the class was more than I could have asked for. Red Hot Annie was unbelievably supportive and kind to everyone in the class, and made everyone feel uniquely recognized and more confident. Everyone else in my class was supportive and friendly as well. To see where the students were at the beginning of the session vs. the end was amazing! There was zero judgement or negativity from anyone that I interacted with at Vaudezilla - students or teachers - which left me with a really positive and excited mindset after each session. I still haven't decided if I should be offended that all my friends were shocked I took a burlesque class or not... Anywho, take a class I did. I first saw the lovely ladies of Vaudezilla at the Yelp country club event. I was immediately impressed by both their skills and the fact that they seemed to be having tons of fun. Beyond that, I was impressed with the general body-positive, pro-woman vibe burlesque has. Women of all shapes, sizes and races participate in burlesque dance - the focus is more on having a great act rather than a totally perfect body. When Vaudezilla offered a Yelp Deal for beginner burlesque classes, I figured this was fate telling me I had to try it out for myself. Classes run for 8 week sessions, though you can drop in at any time. You can either opt to pay for all of the classes at once or pay on a class by class basis. The first class I attended was taught by Red Hot Annie, Vaudezilla's founder, but that class was very full so I opted to switch to Jeez Loueez's basic class. Both ladies are fantastic instructors, though they definitely have different styles (you best bet might be to take Basic twice - once with each of them!) Classes were a LOT of fun - each class started with a yoga type workout and then we learned choreography. There's no clothing removal in Basic, so everyone felt totally comfortable. Though there is some solo work (walking across the floor, etc.) all of the women in class are in the same boat and the general vibe is very supportive. I loved the diversity of students, too - again, all shapes and sizes and ranging all the way from very Banana Republic (me) to super tatted up. Everyone chatted with everyone and had fun. The studio is cute and cozy and parking on this stretch of Belmont is a total breeze. Unfortunately Jeeze's Basic II doesn't work with my schedule for this session, but I definitely plan to take it in the next cycle! Oh, one more thing. If you don't want to commit to a class, Vaudezilla has several free shows each month. I went to the show they have at Lincoln Tap Room and had a fantastic time! I first encountered Vaudezilla's burlesque acts at the Yelp Country Club event. We oohed and ahhhed at the performances and I thought about how fun it would be to try something like that. They dancers really seemed to be enjoying themselves and had a lot of confidence. I mean, you've got to when you're only wearing tassels. The very next day, Yelp Deals is offering a beginner basics discount. Normally you can pay for an entire 8-week course or pay-as-you-go. It was a great deal and included 4 lessons, a free pass to see one of their shows and an ostrich feather boa for $60 (worth $95) . Unfortunately, I never made it to the final class, so I didn't collect on my boa. However, it was still a great deal without it and I'm pretty picky about deals. In fact, the deal and classes were so good that after my discount, I signed up for the rest of the course. My first class was with Red Hot Annie. She's great! The class was kind of crowded though, so I switched over to Jeez Loueez's and loved it. They are both wonderful, and as Megan G. said, I would recommend you take Beginner twice. I think going with Loueez and then re-taking it with Annie would set you up with a great burlesque background for future levels. As far as the classes, they are a lot of fun. You do some stretching to warm up and get comfortable with yourself and other students. They have a lot of exercises to practice on transitioning, accents and confidence. You start learning some routines immediately and even work with other students to create an original routine in the last few classes. It's a fun and easy workout for women of all shapes and sizes. Let it be known that when it comes to my diet, ain't no bacon, ain't no ham, ain't NO swine of NO kind....BUT....I make an exception for my weekly bite of Po' Chop! She will make you sweat (Jackson family and JT zumba warm up), she'll make you shake ("let's do the splits!"), she'll make you beg for mercy ("let's do the splits!" again), and she'll split your side with Po'-isms (these you'll have to find out for yourself)... I've been through all of her classes: basic, intermediate, advanced, and private lessons. Once I found her, I never strayed. The must-knows: Po' tells you in the first class that this is a safe space for expression and she means it. She always asks what you want to get out of class and then she delivers. The basics: you get the blood pumping, you learn the A-B-Cs and 1-2-3s and then build on them, you do drills, you dig deep into character development and storytelling, you work on costuming, you learn choreography, etc. Now for the special stuff. Po' manages to find the sweet spot of loving and supporting her students while still providing honest feedback so that you can grow and get better. I don't come from a dance background and sometimes (a lot of times) I am awwwwkwaaaaaard. As I have gotten into the higher-level classes with Po' and am responsible for creating spots of my own choreography, I have had many moments of mental blocks, self-consciousness, and frustration. But she works with me. Not once have I felt judged. Even when I know there are times when she must want to kick my ass, she has always been 100% supportive, available, and truly invested in me and my development. She gives constructive criticism in a way that is truly helpful and leaves you feeling confident that you will improve. She is an INCREDIBLY talented, inspiring, and engaging performer. When I go see shows (and I try to never miss it when she is headlining), I actually start squirming with anticipation when I know she is about to perform (if you watch the performance videos and you hear that one obnoxious person scream "PO' CHOP!!!!!" when it's completely quiet...that is me). And that is how you want to feel about the person you're learning from. She has her unique performance style, but she works with her students on whatever style they are interested in and is more than capable of doing that well. I initially chose her class because I had seen her perform and knew I would be best suited to her, but I have seen/been a part of classes working on more classic acts. Taking burlesque has been one of the best things I have done for myself and a very emotional experience from day one. I have to make myself vulnerable and be okay with being uncomfortable sometimes, but I've had so much fun in the process and have truly improved as a person all-around. I attended a Friday night Vaudezilla show at the Lincoln Tap Room recently. Vaudezilla's students perform in two sets for this regularly occurring event. The newest student/performers perform at 9:00pm, and at 11:00pm, they bring out more experienced/bigger name performers. I was there because a former co-worker was performing in the early segment, and a group came to support her. Gentle Reader, that is the only thing that could have dragged me out on a craptastic Friday night to see women taking their clothes off. Thinking about this beforehand, I was pretty nervous and uncomfortable. This was way, WAY out of my comfort zone. But hey, if you want to learn and live your life, instead of spending it on the couch, eating doritos and watching American Idol, you go out and do things that make you uncomfortable. So I went. The Lincoln Tap Room deserves a review (also craptastic) of its own, but that's for another day. Briefly, there is a small raised stage near the back where the women perform. What they perform is burlesque. They take off their clothes. Not, of course, the way you take off your clothes before climbing into the shower. This is pasties and G-strings and provocative poses.It is in the grand tradition of Sally Rand and Gypsy Rose Lee. And the performers are not driven to stripping by their life circumstances - these are young, professional women who have found a new (old?) way to assert their feminity and take joy in their sexuality. And take it from me, they perform with joyful abandon. These women are having a great time. They love their bodies. They love their womanhood. They enjoy the power of their feminity and sexuality. This is not exploitation - this is knowing and claiming your own power. For the first few performers, I admit, I stood there with my jaw hanging towards the floor, thinking "OMG, they really ARE taking their clothes off in public! I can't believe I'm seeing this!" And then, I got bored. Totally bored. Gentle Reader, I am a woman. I was born a woman. My body is quite a bit older than the performers', but I've got all the same equipment they have. Seeing on stage what I see in the mirror every day quickly became dull. I left. Talking about this afterwards with a few friends, I came to the conclusion that the most appreciative audience for burlesque consists of gay women and straight men. I am neither. So, I ventured out of my comfort zone, I've been there, I've done that. I have tremendous admiration for the work these performers do, and the exuberance and joy of their performances. However, I won't go again. There may very well be something that I just don't "get" about seeing the same kind of girl parts I see everyday anyway. It's just not for me. read more

Ill make this short and sweet :) More people need to know about Vaudezilla!! Vaudezilla is so much fun. As a person who hates going to the gym, this place has become my haven where I can dance and let loose in an adorable purple studio which is so very conveniently located just a few blocks from the blue line and right off I-90. Their fun and sexy classes have inspired me to make dancing a daily habit because its such a creative healthy way to relax after a long day at work, and I always feel great afterwards. I love the classes Ive taken with Zara Estelle, she's got a lot of spunk when teaching and shows her creativity through her awesome and contemporary dance styles plus her moves are on point! She is also a cool chill teacher to just hang out with which makes the classes fly by! Ill be twerking letting loose when all of a sudden were done with our workout! Haha and i remember when I first started class with her i could barely bend over let alone touch my toes but now, I can touch my toes!!! Ive also truly enjoyed Phaedra's belly dancing. Her warm ups have legit given me a four pack within 8 weeks!...its still a lil fluffy but I can see it coming! haha Phaedra's enthusiasm is addicting especially when it comes to our dance performance at the end of the course (which btw is such an awesome celebratory way to end a class! plus you can show off lol) I truly appreciate her dedication in teaching and am so ready to take on her second course this summer. I can't wait to see whats to come and her outfits are absolutely beautiful! I can't even really begin to write what Vaudezilla has come to mean for me. There are no words for boobs like this... In August of 2010 I was looking to do something a little different for my birthday and found on of Vaudezilla's free burlesque shows around the city. I thought it was something different and fun and it WAS! The show was at Lincoln Tap Room. I was completely entertained through both sets! I have always had a fascination with the beginning of last century so it was a great excuse to pull out my cutest vintage gear. After that I was hooked! I started coming to the shows at Lincoln Fair every month. My husband and I went to the Windy City Burlesque Fest, which was produced with Vaudezilla, early the next year. Once again we were blown away! We saw some great performers, big names and amazing entertainers. When I heard they had opened a studio I KNEW I had to take classes. I start in summer of 2011 with Red Hot Annie in the Beginner class. Great class! Annie is fun, informative and you can tell she knows her way around the dance classroom. She really laid a great foundation. Next I took Jeezy's Burlesque II. Totally different teaching style. JUST AS GREAT! Jeezy will kick your butt! You'll dance in ways you never knew possible and have a great time doing it! OH! The curl-ups! In both classes there is a strong focus on keeping your core strong. You go home with aching abs but it's good for you! Now I am taking a costume class on Saturday's with Titty Perkins. (I couldn't fit the Intermediate class into my schedule or I would be taking that as well. Next session for sure!) The class is so good! I'm a theatre major and really struggled with costuming in school so I was kinda nervous about the class. Titty has been there to hold my hand the whole way! Even when I had a couple freak-out moments because I was SURE I had RUINED my WHOLE DRESS by cutting wrong, Titty simply took the piece from me, told me to trust her, that it was fine and then told me she was going to fold it up and put it away so I couldn't obsess about it anymore. She was right, of course! Titty teaches from a theatre perspective (her training) even though we are up cycling piece from the thrift store. She took us through sketching, color theory and watercolor technique. She's taken the time with every person in the class to help us with our individual costume even though they are TOTALLY different. I will be taking her class again next session as well. INVALUABLE if you want to be a burlesquer. Anyway, what else can I say? Great shows! Great performers! Great classes! OH! The studio! The studio too is nice. It's close to the blue line or off the belmont bus. The big windows in the front let sun come in but there are curtains for privacy when you're really bumping and grinding it out. The temperature is comfortable and the teachers are always quick to let you know that the temperature can always be adjusted. The only way I haven't utilized them is as a production company but I'm kinda hoping to do that with them for my upcoming 30th. Maybe I'll come back after and add more. read more

I came to Vaudezilla looking for opportunities to further get into the burlesque scene, and was happy to find all sorts of opportunities. I enjoy all their shows I've been to, as they bring a variety of acts and don't discriminate by sex or body type. I've also had the opportunity to take dance classes with Vaudezilla. I've been taking belly dance classes with Phaedra (the other Phaedra in Chicago). She's a lot of fun, very encouraging, and only tortures you a little bit with leg lifts to get your core warmed up for all the shimmies and undulations. In many of the sessions, she'll feature a prop. We've learned how to work with veils and zills (finger symbols) this year (2012). We also learn a little bit about belly dance culture as she talked about the terms that are used and some of the popular performers. Also, in addition to the student show at the end of the session, she'll also see out other performing opportunities for those who are interested. I've also taken some great workshops at Vaudezilla, including Posing for the Bedroom with Red Hot Annie and Kriss Abigail. Annie suggests some very easy ways to get the look you want when posing for pictures and is very easy going. Kriss Abigail then takes some AMAZING photos. I felt so comfortable with her, and she was very helpful in guiding me in my poses to get the best angles. Another memorable workshop I took was Pasty Making with Paprika Ame. This is a very hands on class, and you leave with your own set of beautiful pasties. She goes through step by step the way that she makes pasties (there are always different techniques out there) and will explain where she gets all her materials. I only take away one star because there have been times when I've signed up for a workshop only to have it cancelled due to low registration. But hopefully more great reviews on Yelp with help out. ;-) read more

As a burlesque performer here in the Windy City, I am always look at new ways to improve my craft... and I did just that with Jeez Loueez's Basic Burlesque II. I was able to refine and polish my movements as well as learn new tricks to incorporate into developing new acts as well as cleaning up older ones. The class offered a good 30-45 minutes of stretching and core conditioning which was great to connect better with my body, as well as another 30- 45 minutes learning new burlesque-esque dance moves and incorporating them into fun routines. I walked out of there every time feeling like a million bucks! I highly recommend this to anyone who feels like they could benefit from a little improvement as a dancer, or to those who just want to have fun and feel sexy while working out. read more

I have always loved going to burlesque shows and wished that I had their confidence. Earlier in the year I experienced a crazy drop in my confidence due to some things out of my control. I needed an escape and I wanted to love myself and my body again. Enter Vaudezilla. Lilly's rock n roll class was the best thing to happen to me as my first class. Phaedra's belly dancing is insanely fun and such a workout. Zara's twerking made me really happy with my butt and her floorwork class is out of this world. Willy LaQueue taught me quick, intricate moments, and Dahlia Fatale taught me how to move incredibly slowly as I dance (I would always rush through the moves). I took a four week solo class with Red Hot Annie and she was so supportive of us and gave us great feedback. Every class I've taken has helped my confidence grow. I've made new friends. I have learned and continue to learn so much about burlesque which makes me love it even more than I had before. Side note: I saw the videos from the last two shows I was in. I saw Vaudezilla Productions presents "Rollin Outta Here Naked: A Big Lebowski Burlesque" at the Chopin Theater. It's written by Keith Emroll and Logan Conner and directed by Emroll and Red Hot Annie. Vaudezilla takes bowling, The Big Lebowski, and burlesque strippers and what do they get? A very entertaining and funny show! It was a bit odd seeing characters in drag(women playing men) with drawn on mustaches and beards stripping down to their panties and pasties, but it does work and well. It is a great show! It is presented in about 15 mini-acts which keep it moving and the acting steals the show. Vaudezilla could easily call itself a theater company. It starts more or less with Lebowski on the phone with the business man at the other Lebowski home. He complains about the rug and so on... It is a funny scene and this play was good comedy, stealing liberally and literally from the movie. The show is more theater than burlesque and the stripping is inserted masterfully. Maria May I (as Jesus Quintana) does a sexy strip from a workman's jump suit with a bowling ball as a prop. As I mentioned earlier, Maria does all of this with drawn on facial hair and makes it disturbingly sexy! The costuming was fabulous! Please note the unbelievable bowling pin head dresses in the photo album. There is attention to detail in every aspect of costuming. The actors wore the sets! Red Hot Annie did an artful strip with a sheet and also strips in the self painting scene from the movie. Keith Emroll flexed his acting muscles as the Stranger and hosts two intermission contests, in character, very effectively. The audience had a fun time answering trivia and completing quotes from the movie for sponsor's prizes that were quite generous. read more

The first time someone told me that I would be going to a burlesque show I was extremely excited... I sat in amazement and thought... How could I be so oblivious to something that goes on in Chicago every night! I instantly fell in love...little did I know that my future clients would be loving Vaudezilla as much as I did. I am new to Burlesque and was told THE place to take classes in Chicago was at Vaudezilla and everyone was right! This place is amazing! I took Dirty, Sexy, Floorwork with Secret Mermaid and had a blast. I tend to be shy and reserved, so was nervous to take the class, but everyone was so supportive. I love that the classes are small so that you actually receive feedback. Plus, all of the ladies in the class were fun and supportive. Secret Mermaid is a great teacher. If you aren't understanding something she will gladly take time to break down the move until you are confident. Plus, she makes the class really fun! I highly recommend this class, teacher, and studio! I left the class feeling 100x more confident and already signed up for another class. If you are considering taking a class DO IT! What to say about Vaudezilla... Vaudezilla has become a haven for me. I first stepped into the studio early in 2013, and haven't looked back! Vaudezilla really is amazing in bringing out YOU, and your own style and confidence, quirks, and merriment! They are queer and body positive, and live up to that in their shows, and the support and opportunities they offer to their students. It's helped me to realize my own unique gift I have to bring to the table. And we all have it to give! You have to take a look at different classes and find the right teachers that vibe with you, but there is something to learn in each of them. It's nice to cycle through and get that chance to grow as you explore the different modalities and aspects of your personality. I feel like this review is underwhelming for what I am trying to express. So, trust me instead. TRY IT. We were all the shy student starting out wondering what we were getting into. But so were the others in our class. We bonded. Made really rad friendships with open-minded, creative people along the way that will blow your mind! Just went here for my birthday. I've been a customer for a while and will continue to be. As Birthday girl I got special treatment, for no additional cost, reserved seating for my whole party, a shout out where I came up to the stage with the host as well as a bag of sexy goodies. I love the intimate space. And the audience members enjoy themselves regardless of their burlesque exposure. Talent is always amazingly fresh and creative. Willy LaQueue was particularly on point that evening. They often have guests from all over the country as well as featuring local talent. I hired Keith of Vaudezilla to do the video and editing when I wanted to make an instructional video for an international dance challenge. I came with ideas based on standards in my industry, and he was open to accommodating what I was hoping for. He offered great advice and came to meet with me to make a plan beforehand, and a very organized plan at that. During the filming, he was patient and helpful. The final product was just as i hoped it would be. I have had comments on the final product from those who viewed it that it was very professional and looked like a DVD. I signed up for the Rubenesque Burlesque Mar/Apr Session. It is a class for people who identify as plus size/full figured you get the gist. I initially signed up as a treat for my bf. Then I got dumped, I was like ugh, should I still take this class?!! I'm so glad I decided to stick with it! The overall environment was very positive, uplifting and FUN!! The instructor Vanna Tease is also very encouraging and positive. The class was a mix of body types and ages, Vanna was very receptive to students and their capabilities without singling anyone out. The classes are only an hour and we usually warmed up for about 10-15 minutes which sucked because you have so much fun in the class those 45 minutes go by so fast! The current space is ridiculously cute. I've never been to a dance studio before this one, it definitely makes me feel like I'm auditioning for FlashDance!! Loved this class so much, I've already signed up to take it again!!! **Side Note** When I signed up I thought I was just taking classes. I had no idea students put on a showcase at the end of the session. I was very nervous at first with the thought of dancing in front of people, everyone is the class including Vanna is so supportive and positive I got rid of my jitters after my class!! read more
