Once inside you have to walk up to the second floor. Dance studio for class was big and spacious. It was one of three different studios. This space is huge. Class started with warm-up which got your blood flowing. Warmup included pushups so grab floor mat if not keen on doing them on hard wooden floor. Dance class was tough. Prior dance experience is needed. You don't have to be a professional but need to be able to pick-up choreography quick. Sometimes you will learn (2) 8 counts together and then move on very quickly. The style of dance seemed like Jazz, Theater and Pop. I liked it but I usually dance hip-hop, latin or African. It was a change of pace but Julia made it super fun. With this particular routine there was a plank portion, I skipped it because I just didn feel like it. Julia prepared me that the routine did include this in an 8 count. I just added some bodyrolls and called it a day. Most of the people in class seemed to be regulars. Everyone was friendly. After 44 mins of dancing, we finished with some toning that included an arm song. After putting light weights down, Julia stretched us to the max. THANK GOODNESS I would come back and groove some more. I honestly just wanted to delay working on a memo so thats why I signed up on Class Pass at last minute.

When I moved to Edgewater last year, I researched Joel Hall, but again, discouraged myself from going. And now I am kicking myself that it took me 13 whole months to get my butt out of the house and into the studio. I went for the first time recently, and I don't mean to be dramatic, but it has already changed my life. From the first class I felt welcomed, encouraged, and assisted. When they say this studio is diverse, it's not just a line. There is every race, gender, age, and skill level represented in all of the classes I have been to. And yet, it still felt like one cohesive group working together. I never felt judged by a teacher, or more talented student, and when I say I am a novice, that is not humility in anyway. The positive energy that streams from the staff, to the teachers, to the students is palpable. I only wish I could do more to support their amazing work, because I am so excited to continue going and join the family that this studio has created.

I entered the studio everybody was so nice from the first minute that I attended classes there everyday 3 weeks long! The teachers are all really professional and push you to your limits, but still they are strict in a caring way and motivate you to keep on working! Joel Hall himself still teaches classes and I attended his Jazz Dance Method, which is really hard work! He himself said: "We're gonna kill you, but you're gonna love it." and that's just the way it is! You develop such an ambition that you keep on stretching and tightening your tummy and it's the best work out you can get! The Jazz, Modern and HipHop classes with Will Gill were absolutely wonderful too! I always did 2 classes in a row, although I was already soaking wet, but he keeps making you want to dance more and more! I can recommend this Dance Center to really everybody! No other dance studio in Chicago makes you feel at home so quickly and every class is worth attending because I've never learned so much technique and also feeling for dancing and music before than I did in this 3 weeks at Joel Hall! I'm gonna miss it in Austria! I hope I'll come back soon!

The classes are priced similarly to other adult drop-in classes in the area. The studio is spacious and welcoming with incredibly clean studios and tidy bathrooms. We were greeted warmly by reception when we walked in. The class itself was not my favorite. Their classes are only an hour long rather than the traditional 90 minutes. Our teacher also did not teach this class at a beginner level. It was definitely more intermediate. Many students in the class were struggling to keep up, so it was frustrating that the teacher did not adapt instruction. My friend did ballet for 15 years growing up and even she was struggling to keep up in this class. If you are new to the studio, it might be worth calling to ask about levels. I wish I had, as the class was too hard to be enjoyable for me. Overall, I would like to try another class here, but I will either wait until a different teacher is available for beginner ballet or I will come back in a few years when I'm at more of an intermediate level.

She clearly had favorites (we weren't one), and we observed her not even address my daughter despite her running toward her yelling her name out of excitement in class. Sure, you might have a couple favorite kids, but never show it. It got to the point that my daughter made comments to my wife and I at home that "Ms. Nicole won't say hi to me." For anyone with young kids or had young kids, for a 3 year old to say this, it must be a pattern of behavior. It broke our hearts. And to cap off the experience, the night of the recital, my wife and I admit we forgot to pay the remaining balance with everything else going on in our lives (expecting baby #2 in 3 weeks to name the biggest). Nicole greeted my wife and mother-in-law in quite possibly the rudest and most disrespectful way imaginable...."I don't have time for this tonight. She can't come in until you pay!" Thankfully we had enough cash to pay, but she released our tickets the day before and would have sent us home for an oversight we clearly were willing to pay. She caused a scene, and it was completely out of line. Her tone, demeanor, attitude, and overall treatment of people she doesn't care for is unbelievably disappointing and unfortunate. Not to mention, the lack of organization at the recital, the lack of food and drinks for young kids, etc. was all shocking (it was from 4-7p). Wouldn't recommend it to anyone.

At first i was nervous, I had never been on a dance floor before but they walk you through it, teach you some basics and they make it fun. Everyone always asks who I dance with (as a single guy) and thats my favorite part; its extremely social, you rotate partners every couple minutes and you slowly get to meet new people who will quickly become your best friends. A year and a half in, i now call myself a dancer and ive met more friends here than in the previous 4 years. So after getting over the forced fun awkwardness of the basics the second big thing for me was going out and dancing which i did at the Latin Rhythms socials. The positive reinforcement that i got from students and teachers was great, everyone has to start with the basics and everyone has been there. It really is an entire community built around helping you to get better and enjoy it. No one is a master from the get go and everyone just enjoys a good dance, doesn't need to be fancy. So here in my journey, I'm taking 5 classes a week, most of my friends are dancers and I'm learning salsa and bachata. I highly recommend latin rhythms because of the instructors, they have something for everyone and they are the best. I do take classes at other studios but for the beginner, the fundamentalist or if you want to work on a specialization, this is the best place in town. Its the people, the community and the environment that makes this place special.
