I have been in a couple of times when I have been in Harborne. The chap who works there or who owns it seems really friendly and chatty. Several times he has made small talk with me, which is nice as it makes me want to pop back in here. I have always found what I needed in here, which is usually just some chocolate and something like milk to take back home. The prices are fairly reasonable for a convenience store and I have been to more expensive stores in the area. Overall, I like this store because the service is great and it has been convenient for me.

Open from early morning until at least 10pm every night this isn't somewhere you'd travel miles to visit but if you live nearby it's a great place to purchase things like compost or barbeque briquettes. They are also notable for stocking a good range of real-ales, an extensive selection of doggie treats (which get the seal of approval from Dave the greyhound) and the man who runs it is a really nice chap who often compliments us on how well Dave is looking and very much lives by the adage 'the show must go on'. Not only does the shop stay open at Christmas and New Year but perhaps most memorably of all through a recent power cut where thanks to a torch-lit fetching service the people of Northfield Road were able to continue to make their essential purchases of booze, fags and Monster Munch.

It does this in a few ways. Firstly, their service goes above and beyond. I've been in a couple of dozen times and the service has never been anything less than fantastic, always friendly, and they can't ask if you need any help quickly enough it seems. The second way is by a great range of products, going much further than usual shops, selling cards (although admittedly this section is sometimes sparsely populated) and an above average selection of frozen goods (these are often mysteriously missing from small shops such as this). The best (in my humble opinion) is their low canned drinks prices, with some available from as little as 30p, a price you rarely see in this day and age.

It has a pretty decent selection of wines, spirits and beers, a small selection of fridge food, fresh milk etc and not too shabby amount of cupboard food and confectionery. If you find that your first choice of shop/supermarket is closed be sure to always give this place a go. It's not too expensive and sometimes cheaper than the big chains and tends to have some of the lesser known items that you could be looking for.

Despite the mini-ness of this post office, it was still replete with a mini-queue (5 or 6 people). But this is par for the course, with post offices. I, however, was not in there to use the post office, but the 'convenience store' which was, indeed, convenient as I needed some milk, a can of coke and a chocolate bar. (OK so 'needed' might not be the operative word there, but that was what I was after...) It's a really strange shaped shop - partly because there is a mini post office down one side, and partly because, well, it's just an odd shape. There were all the usual newsagent-y stock, crammed into a small area. On the minus side, the girl at the till seemed super-bored and not particularly friendly. On the plus side, they actually sold skimmed milk - very few little shops do - and my three items only came to the princely sum of £1.94; which seemed like very good value to me.

As a previous reviewer has said its a funny shaped shop and i haven't used the convenience store part of it (although they do sell The i newspaper which is most welcome) so am only reviewing the post office. A couple of years ago i went in to return a parcel and the woman behind the counter (it always seems to be the same person when i've been in) was so incredibly rude to the couple in front of me that i was quite shocked. I then got exactly the same treatment because id printed out the wrong returns label for my parcel - the woman talked, indeed shouted, over me as i was trying to explain. So incredibly rude. I went in this morning and again there was the same lady and i was reminded of that previous visit. She wasn't rude but she was just so miserable. No smile, no reply to everyday chatter, very curt and just plain miserable - i realised that this is how she is everytime i use the post office. So don't expect a welcome cheer and a chat with your local post mistress! On the plus side the post office has an external cashpoint for which they get one star....

It is a pretty standard convenience store, with basic food and household items alongside booze and newspapers. I purchased some chewing gum so I didn't exactly do much in the way of in-depth research. It looks massive from the outside, but is actually rather small inside. There are lots of convenience stores in Old Hill and this one is perhaps middle ranking. It is convenient and it is a store. I've been in better and I've been in worse.

They sell everything from fresh fruit and vegetables to cereals and pens to scratch cards. They go the extra mile by giving good customer service, having a cash point and photocopying and faxing service (even though nobody uses fax much these days) The Items are well priced and I think in many cases they beat the supermarket prices. This is more common in the fruit and veg section. However they don't have a wide choice of products as their products are just the basic. If Select Xpress was closer to where I live I'd definitely be going here more often.
