Varberg Fortress was built in 1287 by a Danish Count as protection against the Danish king, who had declared him an outlaw after the murder of King Eric V of Denmark. The fotress became in 1305 Norwegian because of help from the Norwegian king building it. Later the Norwegian King's daughter inherited the place, married a Swede and the fortress became a semi-independent Scandinavian state before it became Swedish in 1645.
Today it's a beautiful place to hang out, have lunch or just take a walk. Check out the museum or stay at the hostel. Sometimes there are also being held concerts at the fortress. read more
