A well-presented appetizer at 1931 Bistro.

Is that all there is??? (Cue Peggy Lee) I feel strange giving an art museum a 2 star rating, but... I visited VAG last week - it had been over a decade. The admission fee (no senior discount) was $35. Was looking forward to the Emily Carr exhibit (4th floor) - but it was puzzlingly small. I'm aware that VAG has a large collection of Carr's work in their permanent collection - why isn't more of it being shown??? The second floor gallery was off limits - apparently while a new exhibit is created. OK, the first floor had a pottery and a photography exhibit. Where is the permanent exhibit?? The old masters? The Group of Seven?? I was left with a feeling of scarcity. Until the museum is built up I'd suggest lowering the admission fee to something more commensurate with what's being shown. Honestly, it's a stately building with not very much being offered for public viewing. In the meantime, I enjoyed a tasty well-presented appetizer at 1931 Gallery Bistro.

We lucked out and were in Vancouver the first Friday of the month when evening admission was free to the Vancouver Art Gallery. It was probably more crowded than normal, but we went an hour before closing and there was no line. There was about 4 levels, but one level was closed as it was getting set up for a new exhibit. There was a small arts & crafts table where you can create your own art and seeing other reviews, this changes. Coming from DC with large museums that are free, the exhibits were a bit underwhelming. For the normal admission price of CAD $35, I would've given it one less star for the value especially since it seems there's always a floor or area(s) closed off for set ups. But if you're going on the evening of the first Friday of the month for free, then it's worth a visit.

The exhibits on the first and 3rd floor are horrendous. A bit psychotic, underwealming and strange. Its as if an angry disturbed child created them. The fourth floor by Emily Carr was the smallest and the best exhibit, revealing well thought of and themed pieces. Unfortunately it's not enough to excuse the price of visiting this museum. The only reason it's not getting a 1 star is the staff at the front desk was kind, professional and offered a warm welcome. Not worth the time or money if you are visiting Vancouver.

Unique collection. Nice art gallery but second floor was under construction. First Friday of every month is free from 5-8pm.

Modern collection from 2000 -1950s. Not too much to see compared to other Art museums.

Really enjoyed the art gallery even though the communist art really wasn't my thing. I did enjoy the Emily Carr exhibit.

Nice art gallery, it's always fun to visit once in a while and the building and architecture is beautiful. Usually not too busy but there is one day a month where you get free admission and the lineup to get in is crazy.

Very impressive! Spent half a day with the family checking out some of the most magnificent collection of art in one location. $29 for adults and children up to 18 year olds are free. Each floor, exhibit and featured art artist presented a unique array of creativity and life as you make your way through the gallery. After strolling through it all, we wrapped up at the lounge area for beer and wine to discuss our favorite pieces. For me, Denyce Thomasos's work I enjoyed the most.

Nice artwork. I really like the new display. Look forward to visiting again soon. The first floor was still under construction when I visited. I will have to visit again once it's ready.

I have always loved visiting the Vancouver Art Gallery! Great way to spend an afternoon - I find the exhibits are always interesting and beautiful too. Biggest con is the price: $29/adult, which can add up quick. The year membership at the base tier is $60, which I have and recommend for anyone who likes to drop in often. I'd recommend attending a First Friday evening for complimentary admission, though it's always super busy then!

Very little art to review. poorly displayed and non functioning elevators. Considering the entry price, it was not worth it.

The gift shop is also pretty special. They have Native Northwest items, which I love, but they also have other wonderful items. I could have spent a lot of time here if I hadn't been in a hurry. There's a lovely courtyard outside to sit in and lots of coffee shops and restaurants in the area. I got a 2 year membership so I can go back often since I enjoy the place so much. If you have a big bag or backpack you will need to use a locker which takes a Canadian quarter - which you will get back. There are plenty of nice washrooms and there's an elevator if you can't do stairs. Staff are kind and helpful.

It's a gorgeous 2-floor monument to the legendary Haida master artist, Bill Reid (1920 - 1998), and other established and upcoming artists. Before our visit, Gayle and I had never seen a museum like this. Outstanding! The museum space is full of natural light, great viewing angles, and compact enough to see it all and comprehensively in a relatively short period of time. We were overwhelmed with the sculptures, paintings, jewelry, and more, but not in a huge museum sort of way. The folks here know their art were more than happy to explain anything we asked. Their well curated gift shop is an extension of that. If you want a manageable deep dive into Haida and related art, and find yourself saying "Oh Wow!) at lot, this is your place.

The house itself is worth a look with its beautiful architecture - but it's also full of interesting pieces of Canadian history and Roedde family artifacts. You can do a self guided tour - but we opted for the guided tour just for funsies and I'm so glad we did bc we learned a lot I feel like we may have missed just browsing on our own - such as the scandalous story of the home's architect! The house was built in 1893 by British architect Francis Rattenbury - and his story itself was pretty fascinating - a scandalous divorce from his first wife and he was eventually murdered by his second wife's lover! Drama drama :-o The docent also showed us a really neat "Domestic Science Diploma" of one of the family - it even had grades for "cookery" and "housewifery" - I had no idea they even had diplomas like that back then! The pace of our cultural change never ceases to amaze me. They also had a really lovely exhibit featuring renowned Canadian poet Pauline Johnson - whose father was a hereditary Mohawk chief! The house is very well curated and the docents are very knowledgeable. I especially loved how the house really immerses you in the life of the era - one of my fave things was all the Victorian dresses on display! So this museum might seem small but there's a lot to unpack here if you have the time. Their opening hours are limited and seasonal but accurate on their website. The whole neighborhood is historic and very walkable. I regret we didn't have enough time to thoroughly explore! The price is extremely reasonable- it's $10CAD which is just over $7USD at the time of this writing. Parking is limited and street parking in the neighborhood- but we just walked from our hotel easily.

(We unfortunately did not check out the actual gallery or exhibition as we were there just 30 minutes before its closing at 9pm). The gallery gift shop is fantastic. I admit, we are suckers for museum gift shops, and this was just like a smaller version. They had gorgeous artisan jewelry, artsy household decor accessories, clever and unique games, candles and potions, greeting cards, etc., all the types of high-end and clever and artsy items you'd find at most art museum stores. Prices are high, yes, but most items are unique, that you'd not find elsewhere, and are of high quality, and support artists and the art gallery. Also, they do have a section of sale items here, too. I really appreciated how family-friendly the staff is here, and how they have programs and items designed to get kids interested in art. Case in point: at the counter they advertised free kits for kids, to make these AWESOME, cool articulated puppets. These puppets are super neat, made from thick, colored cardboard, with funky graphics on each section, with each section attached to each other by metal rivets or brads, so the joints are all articulated and move. Super fun. And FREE! My friend asked for one for her toddler niece and the lady at the center asked if she wanted more than one kit. So my friend got three kits, for her niece and her little friends. I asked for two kits, for my two kids (who are older, but would enjoy them) and the lady said, sure, no problem! So I got a few of these fun puppet kits, too. I thought that was amazingly nice. I should note, too, that this building is gorgeous, with clean lines and infused with light as the walls are all glass. And they have these comfy, cozy, round cobalt blue sofas by the window wall facing the water. Perfect for reading or just getting some sun rays and taking in the view. Lovely lovely building.

The rooftop had an incredible view of downtown Vancouver, and the atrium was nice and warm. There was currently an "electronic concert" going on where there were chairs set up so people could listen to recordings played over the speakers in the atrium. I thought it was a really neat way to get the community together to listen, discuss, and engage with one another.
