Welcome to Henderson, the county seat of Vance County--though don't confuse it with Hendersonville, home to Henderson County's courthouse some four hours west. You wouldn't be the first to mix them up.
Vance County was established in 1881 and named for Zebulon Baird Vance, a prominent figure in North Carolina's history. He served as a Confederate officer during the Civil War, held the governorship twice, and later represented the state in the U.S. Senate.
The building you're standing in is actually the county's second courthouse. The original, completed in 1885, still stands just across the courtyard--a stately reminder of the county's early years.
This modern courthouse is a two-story structure built of buff-colored brick, concrete, and glass. Its most distinctive feature is the circular front section, wrapped in expansive glass walls that open into a soaring atrium spanning both floors. At the center of the atrium, a star-patterned floor adds a touch of symbolism to the clean, contemporary design. The building houses both the Superior and District Courts for North Carolina's 9th Judicial District.
And yes--there's plenty of parking.
