FIVE stars from our group of 4 adults for the Van Gogh Immersive Exhibit in DC--including our ability to go up and back same day on the train from Charlottesville! I wasn't sure what to expect but it far exceeded anything I could have imagined!! It was educational, innovative, spacious, beautiful and tragic. Pictures and video do not do it justice--especially the sheer size of the displays.
SUGGESTION: read about Van Gogh before you go; at least the wiki. Will make it far more enjoyable unless you are already steeped in Van Gogh knowledge. Otherwise, lots of reading and catching up to do onsite if you want to thoroughly enjoy the experience.
There were 3 main sections to the exhibit:
PART 1 covered Van Gogh's life and the development of his style over time.
PART 2 included a complete immersion into his works via 3-D, color, light, music, narration and incredible effects that bring the paintings to life! This section includes a life size "bedroom in Arles" and a huge room (think 2 basketball courts) with lounge chairs, rugs, benches and pillows where you can sit, stand, or lie down to take in the show. This part was incredible and where you were truly "immersed" in Van Gogh's works and emotions.
PART 3 explores his sadness, mental instability and period spent in the asylum. This is also covered through effects, narration and music and is part of the same sequence (same room) referenced above.
At the end is an optional (MUST DO even tho it's an extra $5) section with a 10-minute virtual reality experience. It begins in Belgium, transports you to his bedroom in Arles, then takes you out of the door, down the stairs and on a walk around Arles stopping at locations where various scenes were painted, including many of his most famous. It ends with you seated at an easel back in the bedroom painting "the bedroom in Arles". This was AMAZING!! Probably my favorite part of the whole thing. You truly felt like you were IN the town of Arles and it was 360 so you could look all around. So cool!! If you go, it's a MUST!!
Humongous kudos to whoever imagined and brought to life this amazing experience!!! read more
