Ludlow has a reputation as a foodie town, and is part of the Slow Food movement that started in Italy. You would therefore expect its deli to be good, and this one doesn't disappoint. There are two large chilled counters. These have a good range of things in bowls, such as feta stuffed peppers and many varieties of olives. There are good cheeses including Mrs Kirkham's Lancashire, great Caerphilly and the local Shropshire blue, plus some less well known cheeses from Herefordshire and other parts of the Marches. There is a good range of Patchwork pates, both meat and vegetarian, and some other chilled savouries and meats. The shelves stock condiments, jams and seasonings, plus rice, pasta, sauces and other staples. There is a small freezer cabinet stocking ice cream, and some frozen offerings from Patchwork. The staff are friendly and helpful, and happy to offer up tasters, so you can buy with confidence.

Watch out for the AA/RAC reps on the way out. Just cover your ears and run past, mumbling "no thank you". My only gripe is the lack of price reduction on items that are approaching the sellby date. For example: Brisket joint £6, reduced by 30p to £5.70. Same joint at the end of the day now reduced by another 70p down to £5. Then it's chucked out. Come on Morrisons, it costs you money to have this stuff taken away. Just reduce those items more and they will shift off the shelf.

Based on the atmosphere and quality of wine, I love this little spot. It is so cosy. We were the only customers in the store and received superb service. The owner runs this location and a few other shops, plus hosts food tents at festivals during Christmas. She came over to our table and made some wine recommendations and gave us a bowl of crisps on the house. My partner, Seth S., and I both ordered the Pinot Noir from Romania. It was delightfully full-bodied and smooth. The lighting is dimmed just enough to encourage good conversation and a comfortable atmosphere. There are two main rooms for seating, each with groupings of chairs or booths around bistro style tables. The art and decor feel like a brasserie. I would highly recommend The Deli for a delicious glass of wine (or 3) and great conversation with friends.

Superb sausages, great bacon, exceptional bread, (the deli sells some of the best bread in Birmingham). 2 succulent sausage, 2 bacon, fried egg, 2 half tomatoes, mushrooms. toast, quality butter. Its one of the best in Birmingham, (I rate it joint 2nd). The staff are great, headed by Pip the owner and her team of assistants, (including sons). I've been goin to Vermeulens for many years and it always reminds me of my childhood when I would go shopping with my Nan and stop by at Vermeulen's to buy a Strawberry Tart. In fact even now, many years later, I still stop by for the same cake, even though I now get tempted by the huge sticky buns or Vanilla Slices. In comparison to some of the more modern Deli's in larger towns you may be dissapointed by Vermeulens offering - It may not have the biggest range of International meats and cheeses but the main attraction is that its kept is old fashioned feel and style and not tried to conform or compete with the modern deli's and in my opinion for this reason its a big Success.

The best thing about Scriven and Thornton's has to be the deli counter. It is piled high with all sorts of cooked meats, pies, cheeses and Scotch eggs. They also serve the most incredible hot pork sandwiches - complete with crackling, applesauce and bread dipped in gravy. Understandably, the queue gets big at lunchtimes.
