Also we don't want to be interrogated about who we are, where we are from, yada yada. Please let your patrons VIEW and ENJOY the pieces! Also we think they should post "NO CELL PHONES!" all over. People who wander in need to RESPECT the artists, their work, and the fact that the rest of us are trying to enjoy our visit. We don't need to hear your loud cell phone conversations! Take it OUTSIDE. Manners and respect seem to be part of our past. Unfortunately, this is why we don't visit as often as we would like to, as these incessant rude interruptions are beyond annoying. We love the MAC, just not the personal experience whilst inside!

We checked this place out after returning from the scenic railroad excursion around 2 p.m. It is…read morelocated facing the railroad tracks about 2 blocks south of the train depot. It is beyond the new county courthouse building it what appears to be the prior courthouse. Admission is free, though donations are encouraged. Given that Blue Ridge is a fairly small town, the scope of their arts building was quite impressive. When we visited, they had a gallery exhibit that took up the entrance hallways plus what was the main courtroom. Many of the paintings were very good. My impression was that they host rotating exhibits like this periodically. There are certainly towns much larger than Blue Ridge that have nothing like this facility for their arts communities. In addition to this main exhibit, they also had an arts supply store in the building, as well as a kiln in the basement for pottery (including classes). They also offered classes in upstairs rooms, on various arts-related topics. I believe the town also hosts arts events a few times a year (like plein air sessions and festivals). If we make it back to Blue Ridge in the future, we'll likely return here to see what new exhibits are on display. I'm giving it a 5-rating due to it exceeding expectations by a wide margin.

The Fairy houses, Bird & Butterfly Houses, and sculptures are for sale as well. Each item is completely handcrafted and can take at least 2 weeks to make, but the finish product is incredible. There's also a gift shop where you can buy small sculptures, and art supplies. The gift shop is run by his wife who we had a great conversation with! Sweet and talented people! It's free to enjoy and take pictures of the garden, but you can donate money if you wish! We had a great experience here. I totally recommend visiting! The women in this store aren't hear to just ring up your purchase, they actually do a wonderful job of presenting the artist and discussing their work. That's how you sell art and it is definitely a feature that sets them apart from the other stores. My husband and I were interested in this huge handcrafted piece and the sales person provided great information about the artist's, (now deceased), history and work. The gallery is beautiful and showcases various art objects from local artists. They had sculpted items, pottery, jewelry, paintings and more. You are asked not to take photos due to copyright concerns and this is quite understandable. When in town, don't forget to stop by the Turning Leaf!

The Old Jail Museum is located in Hayesville, NC and tells the story of Clay County. Admission is…read morefree. The docent is wonderful and brings in stories to help understand the exhibits more fully. The museum is located in the former jail. The jail was built in 1912 and used as a jail until 1972. This is a museum that was done right. It tells the history of Clay County with relevant artifacts and photos and storyboards. Besides the jail's history and having the cells on the second floor, there is a kitchen, an Indian exhibit where you can see an example of basketweaving, Dr. Killian's exhibit which is a replica of his office and the medical instruments used, the school house and textitles. There is even a machine that was used to make socks. The care taken to preserve the building and artifacts is noted. I hope to return and spend more time at this museum. I went through it faster than I would have liked.
