Among the many donkeys that call this place home, are a few mules which are equally as gentle and friendly. Making the time to come visit such an organization as this, is a rare and unique experience that I highly recommend. The "paint with a donkey and have some wine" events are exceptional, will come with lunch and usually a live band while you channel your inner Picasso and paint.... you'll see. The staff are always very gracious and welcoming and quick to make sure guests learn what these animals are all about. Book an event- you won't be sorry, great value for a worthwhile experience.

A Big Dose Of Joy…read more.... My wife and I have always been big fans of farm animals. Cows, goats, horses, sheep. By and large, they're some of the sweetest beings on earth. Fortunately, we've got several sanctuaries nearby which provide much needed care for abandoned, abused and/or neglected animals. One such place is the Rancho Burro Donkey Sanctuary about 10-15 minutes northeast of the village part of Arroyo Grande. A group of 5 made arrangements with the owner, Jim Eckford, to tour the property and visit their residents during a late Thursday morning. Set in the foothills of the coast range amidst ranches and vineyards, Rancho Burro is a sight to behold. The grounds are gorgeous, facilities very well maintained and you feel as if civilization is far away...although, of course, it's actually nearby. Jim and his wife, Carlen, along with a few employees and several volunteers, make a home for 11 donkeys and 1 burro (a cross between a horse and donkey). Forget any negative myths you might have about donkeys. After giving you the "smell test", these guys and gals could not have been more friendly. During the hour we spent in their corral, Jim gave us a quick lesson in the history of each donkey and encouraged us to get up close and personal. Just like people, they all had a different personality. However, the common denominator was an undeniable sweetness. The sanctuary is a not-for-profit 501c(3) organization and relies on grants and donations. Besides private tours like our group of 5, they also host larger ones such as a girl scout troop scheduled for later that same day. If your heart appreciates a shot of pure joy, check out the Rancho Burro Donkey Sanctuary. You'll never consider donkeys in the same way.

All this is provided Monday - Sunday from 6am to 7pm. Prado Day Center also has a Mobil Med Unit in parking lot. Dr. Daniel Bronstein, BEACON Clinic of Chiropractic, provides free Chiropractic services. There are nurses/doctors that provide mental health services as well. During freezing conditions the center is open 24/7 for those in need to have warm shelter from the elements and food service. You can donate canned foods, cooked foods, clothing, shoes, toiletries. You can donate personal time to volunteer in cleaning or garden work. Prado Day Center is an excellent spot for those in need. It's a safe haven. Let's be a hero for someone. Let's give back on a much larger scale. It's a GREAT thing to do!

I just viited this new center in San Luis Obispo. WoW! I've never seen such extensive services,…read moreever. While I do not know the exact bed capacity, let's just say it's huge! There's medical services available that I have never seen, I believe with some sort of licensed nursing staff on premises at certain hours. Meals are served, bunk rooms are kept tidy & the bathrooms are clean. I saw people of all ages entering, from 3 to 83. It's reassuring to know that San Luis Obispo County is doing everything in their power to offer assistance that is obviously much needed. And it's reassuring that the premises were clean & safe enough for all ages to obtain services.

We turned into Cuesta at the most northern entrance and drove along the newly paved street back all the way back to the Achievement House where the nursery in the thrift store are located. It was a beautiful day and there was lots of free parking. We used to donate a lot here, but be sure to check the regulations for what you can donate. There were a lot of books and household goods being donated while we were there and it's easy to drive up and get them out of your car onto the little table there. We walked through the big greenhouse that is the retail nursery and found a few succulents that we didn't have yet. Because I started my succulent garden here. I do have most of these succulents available in my backyard, but there's always something new in different to try. We were warmly welcomed by the two workers doing their watering, moving plants and one man assembling succulents in baskets with different colored stones and gravel. This would make great gifts! I took a short tour through the thrift store after we were done purchasing our plants. There were many items that would be ideal for college students setting up housekeeping!

This was our first time visiting, and there was so much to see. They have so many plants outside for sale. They were beautiful. They also have a separate building with furniture for sale. When you go inside the other building, it's HomeGoods and clothes. They have a beautiful courtyard, and we were able to sit with our dog in the shade. I was able to find a couple things. I would definitely return when I am in the area. 8/24/25
