Hiscoes Gym - Friendly members and trainers

Hiscoes is probably the daggiest gym in Sydney. And this is why I love it…read more At Hiscoes it's highly unlikely that you will come across any young, beefed up, oiled and muscley men doing bicep curls in front of a mirror, throwing you side glances to see if you're watching. It's also highly unlikely that you will feel the need to update your work-out clothes every month in order to maintain the trendy look of the gym. And whilst Hiscoes does have a committed community of regulars, it's highly unlikely that you will be running beside rippling 'Biggest Loser' trainers or beautifully toned film stars that make you want to close your eyes whilst running on the treadmill (not advisable). The gym is small and family based with a distinctly local scene. The downside of this is that if you prefer to be anonymous when you're working out, it's hard to go by unnoticed here. The staff know you by face and name, which means that they also know when it's been a while since your last visit. Also, don't think that just because Hiscoes' team of regulars fall within the 45 - 60 bracket that they're not intimidating too - it's tough standing beside any person that can run for hours without breaking into a sweat or bench-press more than three times what I can, let alone if they're twice or three times my age. Hiscoes has everything you need to try to get fit, including Spin, Boxing, Pilates and Yoga classes. Plus added motivation comes in the form of that cheesy, crusty pizza aroma that wafts across the road from Crust. And trust me, there's nothing like the smell of pizza to make you work harder.

Hiscoes is a great gym except for some of the staff. The blonde male personal trainer has all of…read morethe arrogance you would expect of someone who trains their clients but doesn't notice how they interrupt other peoples training. Also, the Sunday closure between 1 and 4pm might save wages but is a big negative. Otherwise it is a good gym very overpriced compared to others for the facilities but that is what you pay to keep a family gym going.

Maybe UTS Fitness Centre doesn't have the biggest or most glamorous facilities, but it is a…read moredead-set winner: super friendly instructors and staff, a wide variety of classes, a relaxed atmosphere, & a feeling of community. It's such a relief to get away from nasty corporate gyms like FF and all the rest. UTS Fitness Centre isn't just for university students and staff - anyone can join, and the rates are much cheaper than corporate gyms. It's super cheap for me because I'm a student and a student union member (good tip to remember if you are a UTS student: join the union!) At UTS Fitness no one will push you to sign up for personal training, no one will come up and bother you about your weight or fitness goals (unless you want them to), and there is a wide variety of membership types (including 1 month and 6 month things). The change rooms are small and crowded, and this gym can be a little grotty at times. But to me it feels like home, so this doesn't bother me ... The equipment is generally of a very good standard. A quick run-down on the classes: anything run by Dian, Kirrily or Patricia will be ace. Carly's Super Circuit class is also great, and Carol does a relaxing (but sometimes quite challenging) yoga class on Saturday mornings. Guy's boxing classes are pretty solid, but Kashi's boxing classes freak me out. Suspension is an amazing class (using TRX cables and a lot of body-weight strength work) - turn up early because this one is popular. There is also a new(ish) kettlebell circuit class which is great. A lot of these classes really work on functional fitness, and can be catered to a wide variety of fitness levels, and adapted to take into account injuries, and the like. There is a bit of Les Mills (Body Attack, Body Pump), but it's not all Les Mills stuff. Oh, one thing, this is not a great gym if you like doing your training on the weekends. It closes on Saturdays at 3, and isn't open on Sundays.
