Absolutely the worst hospital I have been to and highly recommend going to a different hospital for OB and ultrasound. Been charged for billing and trying to resolve it for months now. Been bounced around to different representatives with no one providing a refund or clarification on what the charge is. Scheduling with an actual provider is like trying to catch a ghost. Non existent and hardly ever convenient. They will spam you several times a day even if you confirm via portal or text message option. Highly recommend anywhere else to avoid these issues. read more

I give them one star because there was no "zero star" option. I have been lied to, and dicked around by these people at every visit. The people who cover the phones, desk attendants, techs and even the nurses are wonderful. Those ****** in the labcoats are another story. Incompetent morons every man-jack of them. On the very rare occasion when I go there, it's always an act of desperation, and I am always sorry. These people do two things very well- nothing, and the wrong thing. My question is this: Why can't we have a real hospital in Galveston? I rarely need medical attention, but when I do, I go to my favourite ER on 61st. I spoke to medical records last week and faxed the appropriate paperwork as instructed. After dealing with the construction and frustration, I finally made it to UTMB. The ladies at the information desk were great and even had written directions on how to get to medical records (it was a maze of right and left turns). Once I made it there the receptionist informed me that the fax machine was not working and after I filled out another release of information form she stated that it would be 7-10 days for me to receive the information. I explained the situation and the need for the medical records ASAP. I was informed that they would print the records immediately, which they did. The employee's of this department are awesome and I'm glad they are receptive to the customers needs. Great job! read more

I went here to visit various people, and for various outpatient situations myself. The staff, especially transportation, are very helpful in getting you to get from point a to b. The new hospital is immaculate, and on a relatively unimportant side note the views of Galveston are spectacular. The staff are efficient, and I even met a doctor who did his residency at John Hopkins in Baltimore. I don't know if it was in any real danger of being divested in fter the storm, but it seems UTMB has had a great recovery. read more

Had a 4 week old in the pediatric ER. No great communication from the doctor's. 3 days in the smallest rooms, very inconvenient to have room for only 1 parent. Also the worst part? They make you pay for parking. As a parent you shouldn't have to pay for parking, only guests. Unreal to have to pay for parking, yea you can validate ONCE and not pay, but doesn't help when you need to leave for food etc... read more

We had the most horrible experience with this hospital, Antonio Gomes was schedule for a lung surgery on April 6th 2015, everything moved smoothly for the most part until after he was cut open. We were then told that after cutting my grandfather open they had realized that the scans were wrong and that the cancer had spread to his lymph nodes and what they thought was stage one cancer was in fact stage three B. We were told that in order to view the full mass they had to make a very large incision on his body as well as remove and rib and cut through a considerable amount of muscle tissue. Therefore he would be in quite a bit of discomfort and would need to be in the hospital for a couple of days. Surprisingly much of the horror that took place throughout this ordeal occurred after the surgery. First, after surgery he was given an epidural. He was moved a few hours later to his recovery room where he was to stay for the next few days. Over the next two hours he was in more pain than I have ever witnessed another person go through. We pleaded with nurses to give him something but they only insisted that the epidural should be working. After begging for assistance we were finally able to get the pain management team to our room where they discovered that the epidural was not functioning properly. The two hours he spent in agonizing pain could have been avoided had someone listened to our endless concerns. Over the next two days it seemed as though his recovery was going smooth and we were right on track to get him out of the hospital. My only complaint over these two days was the complete lack of communication among the staff and just a consistent trend of no one having any idea what is going on. I have never had a family member stay in a hospital where I wasn't able to easily identify exactly who their doctor was and speak with them of a daily basis. Not a single person in this facility knows anything. We have been told 'I don't know' more times than one could imagine over the past few days. The worst of what happened during my grandfathers stay at UTMB happened on what I am praying will be his last night in this nightmare of a hospital. After being given muscle relaxers among various pain killers my grandfather began to lose touch with reality, he lost the capability to control his bowle movements, and had no muscle strength in his legs. The nurses and on call doctor checked his vitals and told us he was fine. They had very little sympathy for the situation and paid almost no attention to my family. Ryan Bullacher was the night nurse assigned to him during the later part of his stay and was the least compassionate excuse for a nurse we have met. This individuals cold attitude was just the beginning of a series of issues we encountered with him. My grandfather had multiple bowel movements on himself where he was left for an uncomfortable amount of time before being cleaned up. On nearly every occasion there were dirty towels and diapers left in a garbage can next to his bed. Ryan had absolutely no patience with my grandfathers disorientation. In addition to all of this chaos, Ryan also left an old, non operating IV in my grandfather claiming that the shift change would take care of it. Understandably, by the end of the evening we were desperate to get him out of this hospital and into another. We asked Ryan how we would go about doing this and were told that Antonio's doctor would be doing rounds starting at 6am. We did not see his doctor until noon that day when his morning nurse had to call him in. Finally after a week of nonsense we were able to get my grandfather out of this hospital. This novel of complaints does not even touch on the uncleanliness of the facility and how run down the equipment was. The entire process has been an absolute nightmare. There were however, a few people who recognized how awful this situation was and went above and beyond to help my family. I'd like to recognize Erin Quinn and Danielle Jackson who were phenomenal. They truly encompass all of the characteristics that make a great nurse. As Danielle put it "we (nurses) are your advocates". And we truly feel as though our advocates through this experience were Erin and Danielle. I only hope the two of them receive the recognition they deserve. This facility is fortunate to have these two wonderful women. We only hope that UTMB is able to take the information from this letter to make what is wrong, right. And also make serious adjustments to ensure that families in the future do not have to go through this. The entire ordeal has been a learning experience and I can guarantee no one from my family will ever recommend UTMB for any sort of medical care. Since UTMB has a vast array of services, this review would have to be several parts. It reviews clinic, the maternity care, and the NICU. During my pregnancy I went to the UTMB clinic in Stafford. Wait was always over an hour after my apt time, even though I would get the first apt of the day and arrive before 7. At the maternity/family planning clinic my dr fussed that it had been two months since she had seen me last, but didn't bother to look at the dates and see that she was on vacation and then I was on vacation. I went into labor only a couple of days after returning from vacation, and was then in the hospital for a month on bedrest. The hospital experience was a nightmare. I went in at 28 weeks in preterm labor but they had me sit in the general waiting room, in a hospital gown and no undies for hours. They finally asked me if I would pee in a cup again because they didn't get to the previous sample and now it was too old. I hadn't had anything to eat or drink in 10 hours, so no, I couldn't urinate. They finally called me back there and found I was contracting every 2-3 minutes and finally the ball got rolling. That's when the revolving door of cervical checks started. I had several people come in each hour to check me, because they didn't agree with each other and because they were 'betting' how quickly I would dilate. The checks were very painful and I begged them to stop but they insisted that it was necessary to make sure they knew EXACTLY how far dilated I was. This was HORRIBLE, but most of my regular attending nurses were very nice. I was released, but went back three days later. I was in the clinic at the hospital and they said I had to wait because there were several women ahead of me waiting for their prenatal apts. I felt the way I had when I was in labor and I had to scream and cause a big scene to get the attention of the dr. She checked me and said I hadn't dilated further but put me in for observation, and we found out that the baby's heart rate was dropping. Although I was no longer in labor, they continued to do cervical checks and at 30 weeks, they accidentally broke my water. I went into labor and they gave me a pain medication although I was not in pain and did not want it. It caused me to stop breathing and I was put on oxygen until the medication was out of my system. I had them put in my chart not to give it to me again, but two weeks later (32 weeks gest) they gave it to me while I was asleep. The medication clearly indicates on the insert not to give to pregnant women, especially if there had been fetal decels as there had been a week earlier. Against my stated wishes they injected it into my IV and my baby's heart rate started deceling. It went all the way down to 0 and they put me in the OR nearly 12 hours after the decels had begun. The anesthesiologist refused to use general anesthesia, but he couldn't seem to get the epidural placed. It took about 45 minutes and there was no longer fetal heart tones and he finally agreed to put me to sleep. My back was black from neck to butt from all the attempts at epidural and I was about passed out from the pain. I had been convulsing with each needle placed. He had them stand me up and remove my gown- I was standing naked in front of a large group of students! They moved me to the other table in the OR and prepped me for surgery. Then they put me out and when I woke I was in tremendous pain. It took me two days to finally get pain medications that helped. In the meantime I found that the post partum nurses are horrible. They would not come to take me to the bathroom and told me to clean up my own messes of blood. They did not take me to see my baby. I later found this to be true of the Woman's Hospital post partum nurses as well. I don't know if they are just way over worked but it was horrible. The NICU was very good, I only have a few complaints. They did not catch that my daughter was tongue tied, so when she was finally able to nurse and wasn't getting enough because she couldn't latch on properly, we didn't realize it. She cried because she was hungry but I wasn't allowed to nurse her longer or give her formula. They never told me that the large spot on her back was called a hemangioma and was not going to go away and would need surgery later because of infections. One of the nurses had a lot of nasty things to say about me and my mom, often within ear shot of us. There were four babies to one nurse and so you often heard many babies crying while a nurse was tending to other babies or filling out paperwork. They vaccinated her against my will. I never spoke with the neonatologists. My OB told me that I had a severe (greater then 2/3) septum in my uterus and should have a tubal ligation because I would loose all future babies. In a subsequent c-section I was told my uterus is perfectly normal. I am so thankful I didn't follow her medical advice! read more

Doctors and nurses are great, but the billing department are a bunch of crooks. They give you a written estimate for any upcoming procedure only to DOUBLE the price after the procedure. They use the old " bait and switch" . I guess those employees in Mgt. that are making $400,000 a year still need thier $ 500,000 bonus. read more
