If I had known how horrible this company is, I would have swallowed my pride and asked my family or…read morefriends for money. This company is single handedly one of the most unprofessional and predatory businesses I've ever had the misfortune of working with. I have never ever encountered another company who threatens to send you to collections after 10 days of no payment. Whoever wrote the script needs to rethink what they wrote, because their arrogance and wrongly placed confidence makes it clear they don't care about their customers - they care about taking people to court and wringing every last dime out of people they can get. It doesn't matter how often or how little you communicate with them from what I can gather from other reviews, they will accuse you of attempting to run from your obligations and accuse you of not communicating with them all the same. I never want to wish ill will on people just doing their jobs, but I do genuinely hope the employees of this company sit and reflect on what they are doing to people who are struggling, who are sick and unable to make ends meet, and I hope for their sake they can come to terms with that. As of 09/02, I was lucky enough to have help paying off my entire loan after having receiving a text that they would be sending my account to collections. I did not see this message until after 5, and since have not received any communication from them. As of 11:31am MST 09/03, I have sent them proof that my loan was paid off and requested that my account be closed in full. As of writing this review, it is not closed. The last communication I want from these people is confirmation my account is closed so I can block their number/email and move on with my life.

Horrible horrible place to work with. My husband is currently with them right now and it's his 3rd…read moretime ONLY because we are in a bind for money for bills and medication. My mother is on dialysis and needs her medication. We are late on so many other bills and rent too. We try to work something out with them for payments and on the day we told them that we could pay, they send us a Venmo request and if we need extra time they threaten us with collections and lawyers fees after telling us that they have tried to "reach us multiple times" and we have had "no contact with them." They could care less about working with you. As long as they can kick you when you're down and slap you with over $1,000+ more for you to pay them because "it is clear that we are running from our payments." After the second time working with them we said we were done because they are so rude. Paid them off last time and the next day they text us asking about a payment and a pay off amount. I told them that we had fully paid them off the day before and they said that they would have to "verify" that it was paid off. A few minutes later we get a text back saying that we were correct that the loan was paid off. This time my husband owed $118 for a payment (before a $35 late fee because hey we don't charge enough interest so why not add on MORE MONEY), I asked them if he could pay them $50 this last Friday on payday and they accepted. I told them we could pay Wednesday for the rest but we unfortunately couldn't due to a medical bill coming up unexpectedly. They email me LAST NIGHT after hours saying that because they didn't hear from us when they expected a payment from us that they were sending us to collections and that they had no contact with us. And for us to imagine all of the lawyer fees that we will have to pay. I told them that I had emailed them Wednesday night when they had originally emailed me so we had been in contact with them. They then proceeded to tell us that my husband then owes close to $200 for payment because of the late fee and the payment that was due today. I questioned them and said that the next payment due date shouldn't be until my husband gets paid NEXT WEEK. They informed us that there was a $35 late fee added on (of course) and then all the other things added on so 'THEREFORE' the amount is close to $200 to keep him out of collections. Eventually they tell us that we have to pay $69 by the end of the night to keep him out of collections today. Wasn't able to get the last $40 so guess we're heading to collections. Very heartless people and very very inconsiderate and unprofessional. I will NOT recommend them to anyone ever again! They get 1 star only because I have to put a star rating in. These guys don't even deserve 0 stars. They deserve negative. Added on: The email we got today. We made "ANY type of payment" and they are still threatening to take him to collections because he still owes $39. Don't believe them when they say "ANY type of payment." They said he has to pay it by today (Saturday) because Monday is a holiday or else he will go to collections.

After driving a half hour, the teller said it would be $160 to send the specific amount. I called corporate, they apologized and said they would do "training" with the employee. In the real world, a good, reputable business doesn't allow the cost of their mistakes to be absorbed by their customers. They suck it up and make it right!

Check City used to cut the rate of interest in half for people who only get paid 1 time per month--for instance, teachers, government workers, social security, elderly and retirees, etc because most who get paid once per month can only pay once per month. I felt this was a very fair way of doing business, by recognizing that not all borrowers are the same and working with everyone individually. Check City used to be my go-to lender when I needed a short-term loan. No more. Starting in May of 2015, Check City discontinued this rate. Another change in policy was that borrowing limits for the aforementioned people (who got paid once per month) were raised. Prior to the change, they were restricted to a lower borrowing limit (as a percentage ratio of amount borrowed to income). Under the new policy, if you get paid once per month (ie: are retired, or on Social Security) you can now borrow a higher percentage of your income, which may seem like an advantage, but the disadvantage is that it's also at a much higher interest rate (double what it previously was). While ultimately people are responsible for their own financial decisions, it seems like this new offering or product essentially encourages those who may be least able to pay to borrow more, and pay a higher rate of interest and consequently get trapped in a cycle of more financial hardship. This is strictly my opinion, but this new practice seems somewhat predatory. As I mentioned, I used to enjoy doing business with Check City. The employees have always been very courteous and helpful and the manager of the St. George Blvd store is exceptionally nice. But I also felt like I was receiving a much better deal than at any of the competitors. And in return for the privilege of borrowing, I honored my contracts and I paid on time, every time. To sum it up: After this new policy change, I no longer feel good about doing business with this company. True...there is an old adage that says if you don't like the terms then don't sign the contract. That said...please learn what you are signing for. I've looked around and there are now better deals out there. After 6 years, I am done with Check City. They have lost a paying customer.
