This has been on my bucket list, and a chance to visit during the 250th USA Independence week (and FIFA!) was awesome!
The museum has the USS Intrepid, the USS Growler submarine, NASA space shuttle Enterprise and Concorde. The exhibits in the hanger deck are great information of the not just the history of the USS Intrepid, but of WWII. The of the films viewed, in the center of the deck and used lights, smoke machines and sounds to simulate a fire caused by a kamikaze attack. It honored those who died and even showed the burial at sea of those gave their lives for the country.
Then we went to the flight deck to check out the aircraft on display. These a very good and well kept collection as well as a chance to see the aircraft restoration shop. The Shuttle exhibit was a chance to see the Enterprise, which I got to see land as a kid living at White Sands Missile Range.
I dint get to tour the command bridge, US Growler, or Concorde since they are (due to the design) not wheelchair accessible, but that's something that isn't the fault of the museum.
The one complaint I do have is the snack bar in the museum. I expect higher prices, but the workers there were rude and even they weren't busy, treated us, as customers, that the muffin and soda we were getting were not just interrupting their conversation, but intruding.
This does not reflect on every other docent and worker in the complex. They were friendly and helpful!
This is great chance to explore a piece of US Naval history, and I recommend it! (Just not the chow hall!) read more
