I don't know what reviewer Senna M is on about in rating this place and the owner (Andy) so poorly. Andy hasn't even professionally hired gear and recorded bands as part of his service for years. He certainly doesn't "market himself as a sound guru" - this is a misleading and somewhat bitchy statement. If Senna's band wasn't happy with the money they spent on their demo, or the time it took, perhaps they should have discussed that with Andy, it seems strange they didn't, particularly considering how reasonable Andy is. As a band you really should be in control of the direction and pace of your recording in my long experienced opinion.
Andy has worked in the industry a very long time, and has the scars to prove it. He has a wonderful breadth of technical knowledge - and has taught me more in that regard than any other. His work as a "sound guy" has nothing to do with his work running a rehearsal room. My band has been rehearsing here for 10 years and it is our headquarters, our spiritual home, and where we spend time creating and being with like minded individuals. Many other long established, and new, bands in Brisbane call this place HQ. Those that do are completely loyal to Andy, and we are also working bands - we actually play gigs regularly, tour, record, promote etc etc etc.
And no, rehearsal rooms are not glamorous. But if you want that - go somewhere else: somewhere sterile and strict. At Urban Humm it is about the music, the people, and the atmosphere. Andy is always there to help, provide advice, or just leave you to do your thing if you want. In fact leaving you to it is his default setting - he doesn't interfere unless you ask.
Andy is a lovely person and willing to help to ridiculous lengths. He supports the scene as a whole - he has tried to establish musician networks, regular local gigs and even puts gigs on at his rehearsal space to try and promote the bands that use his business.
My band and at least 10 others I know will never stop coming here. read more
