    Flowers on our table

Tonight's experience at Unter was nothing short of phenomenal. I am visiting my sister and her husband in Istanbul. We have had great food, but wanted a change in scenery and variety. Sissy scouted some locations in Karakoy and the three of us meandered the streets to check out our top picks. The area is a hip area of town with neat little shops and many unique restaurants and stores. We came back to Unter, and it was a great decision. The restaurant is small, but the large open windows make it feel airy and broad. Even though we were inside, it felt as though we were siting alongside the happening street. The ambiance from the neighborhood meshed smoothly with Unter. We enjoyed the music and took our time scoping out the menu. We began our meal with olives and a cheese plate. We all gushed over the four delicious cheeses which ranged from a comte-esque to a creamy soft cheese. The plate was sprinkled with fresh thyme which kicked up the flavors a notch. The olives were delish and had bits of lemon and garlic included. Our server also brought out bread and a flavorful spread that was tomato based with a peppery kick. My brother in law and I ordered the same meal (grilled tenderloin) and my sister ordered the salmon. Our food come out quickly and was pristine. All dishes were served with mashed potatoes. The foreign pungent cheese atop of them went beautifully with the creaminess of the potatoes and our steaks. My sister's salmon was cooked perfectly with crispy skin and tender fish. She also raved about the herbed zucchini salad that went with it. We were stuffed. But not too stuffed for dessert. Due to some food allergies, we decided to order a slice of flourless chocolate cake. This was the second best decision of the night (after choosing Unter, of course). This was not just any old wheat tee dessert; this was THE DESSERT. We "ooohed" and "aahed." We tasted and savored. Then I realized I forgot to take a picture of this pure dessert, so I got up to take a picture of the lovely cake itself. Perhaps the server saw the delight in our eyes, because almost as soon as we were done he placed another before our eyes. This kindness was gifted to us and was such a delight. The cake is the best flourless chocolate cake any of us had ever had. The texture was silky and fine and burst with flavor. The exterior had a nice crunch. The cake was so good that when we entered it was whole, and when we left there was only a slice or two left. And I promise we only ate two. And yes, I neglected to take a picture of the second slice as well. This meal was the best I have enjoyed in quite a while. The atmosphere was grand and the food was well prepared and organized. The chefs and menu planners have a strong understanding of flavor profiles. Unter is a must-visit restaurant, especially if you are in the area.

Great food, great staff ! You shouldn't miss ! Also try to go on the week days for their lunch menu, it's traditionally turkish cuisine but amazing cooking you'll be surprised how much you missed home food after all these junk food we have been forced to eat.... But check can get sometimes expensive but worth it !

    The 3 mini burgers

This place is a european style modern cafe. They serve brunch and dishes as you might recognize from western europe. I had a "3 mini burgers" and they were great. Some of the waiters were a bit busy with themselves though. Don't go here if you look for something local and turkish. There are plenty of other places nearby where you will find an atmosphere like that.

The aroma is nice when it is being roasted. The shop is small. It has two windows. It's like a drive-thru lol but you walk, no cars. You order in one window and get the coffee in a paper bag at the other window. They do not speak English here or try. Communication is easy because they only sell one type of coffee at the window and have two sizes. I did well with pointing. It is a place you want to know what you want before getting to the window. They have little patience and long lines. They run like robots here. It is crazy fast how work. Have payment on hand. The shop in near the spice market. The coffee here is well known. I bought some to take home. A week later the coffee smells just like it did when I first bought it. I intended to buy coffee so I packed zip bags for it. If u are traveling and dont want your clothes to smell like coffee i suggest to do the same.

So if you know what you want then stop by but if it's your first time, be ready to face the coffee cop.

This place was in the vicinity and decent according to trip advisor AND open late. The restaurant is gigantic. I'm not an expert on average restaurant sizes in Turkey but this is one of the biggest restaurants I've ever seen. It has like 5 levels and is decorated impeccably. Impeccable as a synonym for weird. We were kindly seated in this, I'm not joking, like library on the roof. I literally took panoramic snapchats with the caption "this is literally where we are eating dinner". We sat on the couch in the library and the food was placed on a coffee-table like structure in front of us. We went with hookah of course, because 6 hours of hookah prior to our arrival was clearly inadequate. The staff were impressively attentive to our coals and came to check up on them every 30 min or so. If you know us, it won't be surprising that we literally ordered the entire menu. We got boreka-like spinach and cheese SPRING ROLLS (wtf?), spinach and cheese pastry thing, hummus (OBVIOUSLY), zucchini fritters, meat-ravioli in a cream sauce, and pita bread (OBVIOUSLY). Everything was absolutely spectacular. We ate way more food than is probably recommended for health/safety reasons but it was worth it. The staff was absolutely incredible with how much attention they gave us. Because we were off in a colony on mars practically, we had no idea that the restaurant had pretty much closed down in the floors below. This abruptly came to my attention when I drunkenly attempted to search for the bathroom. Our waiter additionally went out of his way to flag our cab down on our way out. Amazing hospitality in this place. Anyways, this was honestly one of my best experiences in a restaurant to date. Highly recommend.

I ordered the Iskender kebab which is beef and pita bread covered with tomato sauce with yogurt on the side. I ordered a side salad to go with it. The dish was very delicious as you can tell in one of my pics. I chatted with some of the staff about life in Istanbul. I was offered some complimentary pomegranate tea before I left and it hit the spot. This is definitely a place to check out when you're in the area.
