    Signature old fashion
    Cindi W.

My husband likes bourbon so we went to their bourbon and bites event that is held the second Sunday of each month. For $20 you get their signature old fashion and can grab snacks from their grazing table. Each month they have a different bourbon company they are spotlighting and have a menu with food owns you can try as well as signature old fashions. The signature old fashion is great, one of the best I've had! For food options my husband and I got the lobster roll & lamb slider so we could taste both. The food was great of course!! We also tried their seasonal old fashion s. I ordered the spring blossom & my husband got the cherry blossom. I enjoyed the cherry blossom more. The spring was good but the lavender put me in the mind of tea, my husband traded with me lol. Definitely a great spot for bourbon lovers, they have an extensive menu of different bourbons that are available either via flight or individual tastings. The guests & staff are always super friendly.

Recently attended the Cajun cooking night. I was really impressed with how organized they were. All the tables were set when we entered and all of the mini cooking kitchens were set up with the ingredients. You don't cook alone, you cook with the people on your team. Which happens to be the table that you're sitting with. After the demonstration we were allowed to cook on her own, however, you had staff meandering around providing assistance where needed. Then at the end you got to eat everything that you made. Everything was delicious. We really enjoyed it, look forward to returning for additional cooking nights!

My husband and I had a fun date night here doing a group mushroom cooking class. We loved learning about and experimenting with lions mane and oyster mushrooms. Mary, the instructor, was friendly, funny, and informative. The course provides all the recipes, ingredients, tools and utensils. At the end of the class, you get to eat the delicious foods your small group created. As a dessert person, I appreciate that there's always a dessert, lol.

This is such a wonderful class and environment to learn cooking skills. The Chefs are very knowledgeable and helpful by answering any questions you may have and demonstrating how to do it properly. The owner Chef Mary is so sweet and funny that she makes learning fun for everyone! My husband and I have already attended 5 classes and we just signed up for 4 more. This should speak volumes in itself about how much we love this place! Sign up for a class you won't regret it!

We had an amazing date night, making our own sushi as well as fried dumplings and green tea cookies. Our experience also included a bottle of wine and miso soup and snacks to start. The Chefs/instructors were very laid-back, knowledgeable and fun. We definitely would recommend this interactive experience! We had so much food and came home with leftovers! Please consider opening a location in Virginia Beach!

    Amazing night honoring Julia Child.

This was our second time enjoying The Untamed Chef. Everything was top notch from the chef, assistants, ingredients, wine, and food. We learn something new during each visit from knife technique to when to flip a piece of meat. You will leave with a full belly and sense of accomplishment. We are looking forward to our next cooking lesson.

I saw this listed on social media a couple months ago and decided to book it for our anniversary this year. Something different. We did the Bourbon date night and it was so good! It's a small place- only 5 tables, which was nice. The staff was friendly, the chef clear with directions. While I cook a lot at home, I'd never made the things we made so it was fun learning new things and the food was top notch. Highly recommend it!

Christmas Cookie Making. Super, super class and dinner to wind things down. We made 8 different cookies between 3 groups. Our group had 3 couples who met for the first time and we had FUN!

My friend invited me to go attend a cooking class at Untamed Chef. That day we were cooking Cuban cuisine. Chef James was our instructor. He was so nice and patient. What I liked is that not only does he show you how to do certain things but he also explained WHY you do those things. I found that to be really useful. In class, you are put into groups (if you aren't with a larger party already) and you work together to make the dishes. You go by the recipes and they already have a lot of the ingredients grouped together and labeled for you. Some things were already made for you to save. At the end, you sit with your group and share the food you all made family-style. Everything was delicious! And we made so much that we all got to take our leftovers home. My husband appreciated that. It was a great time and they do so many different types of food classes that I think we will do another one that interests us.

We just did our first class at Untamed Chef and had a wonderful time! we attended the "Oktoberfest" class and loved learning how to make some cuisine that we had never tried before. The staff was very helpful, friendly & attentive and made it so easy to learn how to cook the dishes but still have a lot of fun at the same time!

What a *flavorful* evening we had cooking and dining with the incredible Chef Mary and her fantastic crew! My husband and I had been long overdue for a night out, so I decided to surprise him with a cooking class at The Untamed Chef. With so many classes to choose from (they fill up fast, so don't wait if you have your eye on a particular one!), I opted for the Tex-Mex class because I've always wanted to master the art of making Birria Tacos. Upon arrival, we were greeted warmly and directed to grab a menu and find our table. The venue offered complimentary water and tea, with a selection of alcoholic beverages available for purchase. We opted for the refreshing water and tea to keep us hydrated and focused on our culinary adventure. Once everyone had arrived, including our double-date couple, we were organized into groups of four. If you didn't come with a full group, no worries! Chef Mary and her team will seamlessly paired you with other duos, creating a lively atmosphere for the 20 participants. While the five cooking stations felt a bit cozy, it only added to the fun of the experience! Chef Mary kicked things off by explaining our menu and the order of operations, and then we dove right into preparing our meals. Each group shared the delicious bounty, and trust me, there was plenty to go around--everyone was able to leave with a doggy bag! Chef Mary and her staff were simply amazing, circulating to offer guidance while allowing us the freedom to explore our cooking skills. A few steps were prepped ahead of time, like the marinated Birria meat (which takes 6-8 hours, so wise move there!), making the process smooth and enjoyable. The recipes were straightforward, and our group worked like a well-oiled machine to create a delightful feast. When the cooking wrapped up, we set our tables and sat down to enjoy the fruits of our labor. Chef Mary and her team took care of everything else, even providing to-go boxes for any leftovers. Chef Mary's personable nature kept us entertained throughout the class, while her staff was quick and attentive, ensuring everything ran smoothly. If I could suggest small tweak, it would be for Chef Mary to ask attendees to stay at their stations during demonstrations. A few times, it became a bit crowded around her table, which was a minor distraction. Also, my husband mentioned he'd appreciate a chair next time due to his past injuries--definitely something to consider for future classes for those with disabilities! Lastly, I'd love to see a weekly or monthly homeschool class for kids, just like her wonderful summer programs. Overall, our experience was nothing short of amazing, and we can't wait to return! Maybe next time it'll be a girls' night or even a solo visit. Honestly, these classes are worth every penny--even coming from someone who typically avoids the kitchen!

Took the Puerto Rican cooking class with my son last week in order for him to surprise his girlfriend and we had a blast. Learned some knife techniques from chef James and learned about different Latin flavors. The recipes were flavorful and very easy to learn. I can't wait to recreate them!

What an amazing time we had at our date night. We started off with a charcuterie appetizer and a Prosecco. We then had a demonstration on how to prepare all the foods. We made she crab soup, apple and mushroom stuffed pork tenderloin, grouper with homemade pasta, and an almond pear galette. Everything was amazing and delicious. Five out of five would come back again.

Was a surprise cooking class for my boyfriend's birthday and he LOVED it! Beforehand, we were sent the menus and picked our favorite as a group. Our class was pushed to around 730 due to booking conflicts & when we showed up, everything was already laid out and prepared. Obviously, we cooked our own meal! We really enjoyed the conversations and tips Debra + her sister had for us throughout the cooking process. Very informative but not condescending on us young folks & our ways. Once done, we took our meals over to the other side with tables and ate (just us) then our dessert was over. Kinda sad we didn't make our own dessert but we were lowkey tired after all that cooking! The bruschetta was something new for all of us and we loved it! Shrimp scampi was amazing (oh wait, because we cooked it ourselves, duh) and the Italian donuts were delicious (would've loved some ice cream or chocolate with it). We were also gifted a bottle of champagne for our troubles. I'm always down for a new and different experience with my love and the ladies provided just that for us & so much more.

I'm glad to see there are people who are happy with his services but I have found that with reviews, people who get the short end of the stick don't say anything unless it's really, really bad. So I imagine that there are people out there who have had similar experiences to mine but didn't deem it worthy of their time to leave a review. I think it's a huge inconvenience to write this review but I wish someone else would have done this so I wouldn't have had this experience in the first place. Therefore, I am writing this to pay it forward so future bookers can have this data point before deciding if they want to book and put the reliability and concrete-ness of their plans, the smoothness of their event and ultimately their happiness and satisfaction in the hands of this careless, indifferent and unprofessional flake. Long version: The only part of the entire encounter that was positive was that after I submitted the inquiry through Yelp, he responded pretty quickly. After that, it all went downhill. Not only were the email handoffs not warm (as in a "warm handoff" that doesn't leave the customer feeling thrown around between people), unprofessional, disjointed and caused for poor customer experience, I repeatedly had to ask for a link to pay once they had confirmed the date and sent me an invoice confirmation because they had thought I had paid and I hadn't - I was being ethical and trying to make sure they got paid. Then all of a sudden one day, I got an automated email confirmation that my confirmation had been cancelled. No communication from Chef Lin Old or his assistant, Theresa. I had to reach out to THEM asking about the email and was just assuming the best and that they had cancelled it in order to send me a new confirmation where I could pay. But oh no. Chef Lin responds with the unbelievable email: "I decided to take the last two weeks of July - the first week of August to go on holiday. I'm the only one who teaches the classes ( Culinary Instructor of 11 years @ The Art Institute) so no one could cover it. That is why I canceled." I attached the email because I still can't believe how unprofessional he was. I am counting on his services, we are ONE MONTH out, he committed to my dates and the service, he cancels and doesn't even do the courtesy of letting me know himself. I am the one who has to reach out to get clarification and when he provides it, he doesn't even offer acknowledgement of / accept responsibility for / act with professional courtesy for the lack of etiquette and professionalism he is exhibiting. I then write him an email saying how disappointing this experience is and that I will write a review to let other people know they simply cannot count on him and his lack of professionalism. He responds with "Not sure what the second email is about demanding an apology & wanting to write a bad review. If this is how things are starting then we may not be a good fit for each other?" I have attached screenshots of these emails as well. I didn't demand an apology. I pointed out he didn't provide one; "That's super disappointing to hear and the lack of apology or proactive explanation for the inconvenience is really poor customer experience." And not a good fit? What a petulant understatement. I live in San Francisco and perhaps the level of service and standard of professional etiquette is higher there than in the Virginia Beach area but I found Chef Lin Old's correspondence, limited customer service, and backing out of his commitment of service (last minute, no less!) abysmal. I am sure that if we had gone through with the service, he himself would have been unbearable. The ego, dismissiveness and lack of ownership that insidiously eeked out through our interactions would have ruined my cousin's party's evening. I'm a silver lining person and so I've convinced myself it's a good thing the reservation didn't go through BUT I do not tolerate behavior like this in the customer service industry. I don't care - small company to Amazon. We are all customers these days and interactions should be led with and based on empathy and compassion. The way Chef Lin Old approached this CS interaction was like a large company that didn't care about the small customer and how it ruined their day / trip / experience: indifferent, careless, un-empathetic. No one wants or deserves to be treated this way. I am so thankful that I was able to find another chef on such short notice but being treated with such unprofessionalism and being stranded last minute without a chef when the entire attendance of the bachelorette (including the bride-to-be, my cousin, who I can't let down!) were counting on and looking forward to a private cooking class, I feel obligated to write this review so no one goes through what I did.

Every instructor I've had has infectious enthusiasm for teaching us their trade, and even though I work full time and it's exhausting me to go - I look forward to every class. My only complaints are tied to ECPI. CIV is actually the School of Culinary Arts for ECPI. ECPI's policies/support of the school are sometimes shady at best. First - during a blizzard in Virginia Beach, ECPI responded that "if 7-Eleven is open, we're open." Way to think about the safety of your students/instructors. I trekked in - and then STILL had to make up the class because of the instructors that said "screw this." Second, a lot is web-based. Not a problem - if ECPI could keep the internet up in the school. Internet goes down for HOURS at a time probably twice a week on campus. Third, for $36,000 per student - you think ECPI would let us keep our culinary books. NOPE. We've only got to keep 2 so far - and I'm in my 7th semester. Oh, and I have a Bachelor's Degree from the US Naval Academy, and I'm halfway through a Master's program at Embry Riddle, and ECPI only transferred 3 classes. It's all about the money! Very happy with Culinary Institute of Virginia, but wish they weren't associated with ECPI.

We had to pair up with people we did not know and then each person in the group had to choose a recipe to cook. I chose the clam chowder. It took me about 20 minutes to get all my supplies because they didn't have everything out (food and cooking utensils). The instructor came around and said I was super behind...well thanks for making me feel the pressure! So I rushed to get everything in the pot. It looked like my husband and the others were rushing as well. I did NOT like this. It is supposed to be fun. We aren't cooking students and we aren't familiar with the kitchen. All of the Instructors are certified and have been Executive Chefs or opened or owned their own restaurants. They are all deeply passionate about food and it conveys through their teaching. My favorite instructor has left the school, and while I was greatly looking forward to having him as an instructor for his specific area of cooking, I'm completely confident in the knowledge I'll learn from another instructor based on the standards set forth by the faculty. Courses are laid out in a comprehensive manner and are aimed to to prepare you to work in real kitchens. The school has a wide array of connections to some of the best local restaurants, and ones in other states, to help you get the off site training that you want most. The school gave me the opportunity to get in the place that i not only wanted to train at, but work in after graduation. And the certifications you get pay for themselves. i will say that the fast pace of the school is hard for some to keep up with. A lot of information is packed into ten days over five weeks. But it does tend to help adapt to the quick pace of most kitchens. Some of the classes are more web based than others, but no matter what the class, all the information can be accessed online with power points and lecture notes. another drawback is that it's affiliated with ECPI. Classes like English and Algebra are done through ECPI. The instructors are not a part of CIV and are therefor not held to the same standards. For legal reasons, i will not mention any instructors names, but at least one has consistently been reported and has the same students SHE FAILED TO TEACH put back into her class. But that's ECPI, not CIV. Overall, I firmly encourage anyone who is looking to get started on the path of becoming a Chef to Check out CIV and see if it's for them. Definitely a great stepping stone.
