It's a bit odd to review a church, something that I have never done so since the big guy will probably read this review I will be extra nice hahaha In all honesty,St.Marys has everything going for it (as it should because of who its named after)! I love the organ which sounds just huge in the space, and it's even better when they got the full choir to go along with it. They offer full mass services on the weekends and the place can get pretty packed at certain times! The Christmas and Easter services here are well done and leave a strong impression. Now don't expect a european cathedral when you come here, heck Rome has at least 100 churches even bigger and more Magnificant than this! Needless to say its probably calgarys finest, I wish more churches felt like church and didn't try to be something modern or move with the times and for me this fits the bill just fine! Come on down to St.Marys!! 25/30

I, however am used to a smaller congregation and Centre Street is huge! I'll hardly ever see the same person twice, they only have communion once a month, and it just seems too large to feel personal. I love when Pastor Henry Schorr does the sermon, he always makes them relatable but lately he hasn't been leading mass. They miss chances to keep the sermon relevant to holidays (specifically Mother's Day and Remembrance Day), by talking about something else entirely. Like one pastors new Canadian citizenship and their global ministries, instead making the whole sermon about that. Personally, I feel the church is trying too hard to be all-inclusive that they forget to make the local community feel welcome.

I can't and won't speak towards the religious side of this building, but as a seated event venue it's so very cool! It's one of the few impressive sandstone architecture churches in this relatively new city. Large arched ceilings and large arched stained glass windows give any event a classy and powerful cathedral feel. Acoustic music reverberates cleanly through this very live sounding venue and adds it's own unique characteristics to the listening experience. It seats around 600 people in orchestra style pew seating with a second story balcony at the back and second level side seating close to the stage. There's a large and spacious space basement level which makes for a great mingling space during intermissions.

It would seem that all of the best shows occur at Knox. It is where I have had the chance to see some of my favourite (has anyone else noticed that Yelp totally spellchecks the Canadian spelling of FAVOURITE? Probably just jealous that we spell it proper) artists perform, such as Owen Pallet, Timber Timbre, Daniel Johnston, Dan Mangan, and the list goes on. I've seen Owen Pallet a few times here, and the acoustics of the church always contain his violin music more beautifully than I have ever witnessed seeing his act at outdoor festivals or larger venues. Daniel Johnston was also completely haunting, which I believe the space contributed to a lot. The church itself aesthetically is absolutely gorgeous, and rich in history, from what I understand. The sound is something I just can't get over. Incredible. There is something about this venue that makes me all warm inside. I actually sometimes attend shows based on whether or not it is at Knox.

Imagine my surprise to see it was a church. Rainbow flags are pretty rare in Calgary where if you walk in the west end of Vancouver they are everywhere. I was so curious... seems like Hillhurst's strives to accept each individual as they are and the ministry welcomes the participation of all persons regardless of age, gender identity, health, race, sexual orientation, differing abilities, religious or ethnic background or economic circumstances. Hillhurst participates from Inn from the cold hosting the homeless every third Saturday of every month, there is a Kidspace every Sunday mornings for the kiddies, and because of limited parking they encourage folks to ride a bike to mass, walk or to take the train! There are tons of bike racks in the back of the church. I was impressed with the overall openness of this parish on so many levels.

This group of committed Christians faces extreme temperatures below 40 degrees in the winter and above 30 degrees in the summer, yet despite the extreme temperatures and being harassed by Calgary bylaw officers and police officers, they steadfastly serve the homeless four days a week with food, clothing and a Christian message of hope. They have successfully gotten hundreds off of the streets and these individuals are now contributing citizens in our society. They also serve the thousands of working poor that grace our streets. Some of the people they serve are banned for life from entering homeless shelters, so without the help of the Street Church, they would literally starve. I have looked at their organization in an in depth fashion and am convinced that they are all that stands between life and death for some of Calgary's homeless population. Way to go Street Church! Five stars for a church? Oh yes. Make no mistake, this review is not of any particular activities…read morethat happen within the walls of this community church, but of the space itself. It's fabulous! I attended Pecha Kucha Night #7: Love with a great many other Calgarians. The building has a wonderful setup. The basement comes with a full kitchen (and can masquerade as the bar), a small stage, and a good-sized main room with smaller rooms sectioned off along one wall. I fell in love with the checker-board tiling on the floor. It was fun exploring all the different stairwells that connected the basement to the first floor. The main hall is setup with a stage at the front and three columns of pews, one in the centre, and two at an angle on the sides. The best seats are by far in the middle. You may find a pillar or two obstructing your view from the sides. It looked like a pipe organ was installed at the very front of the room, although I'm not sure if it works or not. If you look up, you'll notice a second balcony that wraps around 3 sides of the room. I couldn't help but admire the intricate pattern on the railing. I hopped upstairs to check out the view from above during the intermission, I think I would've preferred the seats up there to those in the wings on the main floor. Although there was a good sound system in place for the evening, at one point the emcee stepped in front of the mic to demonstrate the room acoustics. I could hear him without any trouble at the back of the room. The only downfall is in the quantity of available washrooms. There aren't many. I counted two-that's not to say there isn't at least one more in the building somewhere. However, it's not exactly something an old-school church can do anything about, so no stars lost there.
