Unlike traditional striking martial arts, there is practically no punching and kicking, which keeps accidental injuries to a minimum, while the close physical contact and sparring help strength and conditioning. At Oranday Brothers Jiu Jitsu, the atmosphere is very welcoming. Typical schools at the start of the UFC and MMA craze were very aggressive, giving belts and promotion to the ones that would literally crush their opponents. Understandably, attendance would often be sparse, injuries high, and the eventual collapse of start-up schools. In today's environment at OBBJJ, the school is structured to build technique over brute force, allowing drill time at first before the students ever get to their first live sparring session. I've been attending classes at OBBJJ since 2016 and have never been in better shape. As a 40-year old slightly overweight man with arthritis in my shoulder, I have less daily pain than when I was in cardio kickboxing or heavy weightlifting, even though the classes and rolling leave my gi completely drenched in sweat. Stop on by, they offer a week free. It's great for kids and adults. The classes are also separated by age group so there is no intimidation.
